One of the most aggravating things to me in this world has to be the absolutely rampant anti-intellectualism that dominates so many conversations and debates, and its influence just seems to be expanding. Do you think there will ever actually be a time when this ends? I'd hope so once people become more educated and cultural...
I think there’s this idea of historical tick-tock, that goes from faith or belief to enlightenment. It swings back and forth depending upon geopolitical development.
But that aside, I believe that after the digital revolution, getting people to believe bunk en masse became easier. This has amplified the grift economy, which in turn spreads disinformation, fronts logical fallacies as a debate method and puts bad faith arguments on a pedestal.
Take for instance that guy who illegally experimented on kids because he thought he had a better vaccine than the multi-purpose vaccine that was standardised. After he lost his medical practice he has been forced to rely on financing from conspiracy theorists and socialize with flat earthers because he is now an anti-vaccine icon.
He has to do that because his name is synonymous with malpractice and needs to play the part to feed his face.
This is just one example of the grift economy. For more, seep up “savage alpha male podcasts” to see an even harder grift.
Yes GOG, owned by CDPR. It’s the same people running the show. I think you’re imagining the business as far larger than it is. Hell, the business back when Witcher 3 first came out was much smaller than it is even now.
However things have definitely changed with CDPR. That happened during the Cyberpunk development, which is what I was trying to point out.
I don’t have a source on Keanu Reeves pushing it. It’s my own rationalisation - a theory, but one that fits well. Also, to be clear, I’m not talking about Keanu Reeves the person, I’m talking about Keanu Reeves the Hollywood actor who as a legal entity is represented by a team of agents, negotiating contracts on his behalf.
Keanu Reeves is a Hollywood A-lister, his team has all the weight when it comes to contractual negotiations with CDPR. They negotiate Hollywood contracts. Hollywood expects a movie to take more or less a fixed amount of time, then payment will come in. This does not fit well with game development, which can very easily suffer massive delays. In the past, CDPR have been more than aware of this, and have readily delayed games to get them closer to a finished state. However, CDPR did not do this with Cyberpunk, they pushed and pushed and pushed to get it out the door, coupled alongside a massive Hollywood-style marketing campaign.
Like I say, this is speculation. I don’t claim that this is exactly what happened. However, it seems far more likely than almost every other explanation I’ve read. CDPR were at the height of their game before Cyberpunk, it’s hard to imagine that they wouldn’t have enough capital (particularly with ongoing income from GOG) to tick things over until the game was finished - unless they had some bigger player they needed to satisfy.
The only bigger player involved in Cyberpunk 2077 is Keanu Reeves.
Edit: Also, for clarification, CDPR is both the developer and the publisher in this instance. They’re pretty small time for a publisher, compared to the likes of EA and others, but it’s not hard to imagine they’d have visions of loftier heights. One way of doing that is getting a Hollywood star on board, even if it’s costly and you have to negotiate a contract that doesn’t work well for you.
Regardless, ultimately CDPR almost certainly released early for financial reasons. The exact explanation for that is private, we can only speculate. However I think you’re probably right about the “shitty publisher” behaviour - in fact I think most of it falls down to the attitude of just one man in a semi-senior position at CDPR. I’m terrible with names though.

Disclaimer: The data in this column come from either mainstream news
media sources or scientific research published in peer-reviewed
journals (each category can be determined by following the links in
the reference section). This column's author acknowledges the cultural
bias of the world scientific community in its belief that the
scientific method is the most viable available alternative for
assessing COVID-19 and its effects in an objective manner through a
structured process of observable and repeatable hypothesis testing.
Summary: A new study finds SARS-CoV-2 directly infects the coronary
vasculature and causes plaque inflammation, which could help explain
why people with COVID-19 have an increased risk for ischemic
cardiovascular complications up to 1 year after infection (see
"COVID-19 Virus Infects Coronary Vasculature" under COVID
Complications).
People with rheumatic disease and a history of a specific type of cold
virus infection called OC43 are at elevated risk for developing long
COVID (see "A Common Cold Might Set Some Up for Long COVID" under
Virology & Epidemiology).
Two scientists who pioneered an underlying technology to harness
fragile genetic material in a way that ultimately resulted in the mRNA
vaccines used to combat the COVID-19 pandemic were named winners of
the Nobel Prize in medicine (see "Pair of Trailblazers of mRNA Vaccine
Science Win Nobel Prize" under Media News).
When used against current strains of COVID-19, Pfizer's antiviral
Paxlovid is less effective at preventing hospitalization or death in
high-risk patients. But when looking at death alone, the antiviral is
still highly effective (see "Paxlovid Weaker Against Current COVID-19
Variants" under Vaccinations, Treatment & Testing).
Average levels of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID, being found
in wastewater are down about 5%, compared to last week (see
"Wastewater Data Hint at Possible COVID Decline in Some Areas" under
Virology & Epidemiology).
A panel of independent advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) will meet next month to make recommendations on
updated COVID-19 vaccines ahead of the fall season (see "CDC Advisers
Set to Vote on Updated COVID Vaccines Next Month" under Policy).
A long-term study indicates a correlation between COVID-19 and lasting
cardiovascular impairment (see "Cardiovascular Assessment up to One
Year After COVID-19 Vaccine–Associated Myocarditis" under COVID
Complications).
Mean weekly cannabis-involved ED visits among all young persons were
higher during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, 2021, and 2022 (see
"Cannabis-Involved Emergency Department Visits Among Persons Aged <25
Years Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic" under COVID
Complications).
As the rollout of the newly formulated COVID-19 booster shot begins in
earnest, many Americans are finding roadblocks (see "Shortages, Cost,
and Frustration: Quest for the New COVID Shot" under Policy).
Relatives of COVID ICU patients demonstrate a range of coping styles
and impact on quality of life (see "Quality of Life and Coping With
Stress in Relatives of Patients in Intensive Care Units During
COVID-19" under COVID Complications).
The biotech Moderna said Wednesday that its first combination vaccine,
which protects against influenza and Covid-19, had succeeded in an
early-stage trial and could be ready to launch as soon as 2025 (see
"Moderna’s Combo Vaccine Moves Towards Late-Stage Trial" under
Vaccines, Treatment & Testing).
The May 11, 2023 termination of the PHE has made it increasingly
difficult to accurately track COVID-19 new cases or fatalities.
However, new variants of concern continue to emerge, with consequent
infections and deaths.
Since the termination of the PHE, data on vaccination rates are no
longer being tracked. The last known US COVID-19 vaccination rates
(May 10, 2023) are as follows: full
vaccination (two initial doses) 69.3%; at least one updated booster
dose: 17% (see "Track Covid-19 in the U.S." under
Vaccines, Treatment & Testing). "Our World in Data" stopped trying to
track US booster rates on August 30, 2022 and shows a flat line since
then.

Don’t forget that you can set up alias commands. So if you don’t like the name of a command, or don’t want to keep typing things out, you can set up an alias. For instance, I have to continually switch to another user. I set up alias so I can type gouser instead of “sudo su - user”. So if the name of something isn’t easy or hard to memorize, you can just make it whatever you want within limitations.

Well, feel free to read GDPR yourself, I did multiple times, as did my colleagues as did our lawyers. If some piece of information cannot be tied to an individual, it’s not a personally identifiable information (PII). Let’s say your name is Matthew. If I have Matthew stored in my database, I don’t have to ask for your permission. If my database has the information that @poVoq has a first name “Matthew”, it’s a PII and I have to ask for your consent (or have a valid business reason to require your first name).
From the perspective of a Lemmy instance provider, they’re indeed responsible for their user’s PII. But in any case, I would only receive the IP address of someone, which I couldn’t tie to any other PII and thus it’s not a PII in itself.
If you disagree, all I can say is that you should read GPDR yourself, because I’m quite sure that I’m correct, because we’ve spent quite a lot of money and time on this exact issue a few years ago.
Regardless of the negative aspects, Meta joining the Fediverse will definitely make the numbers of active users explode. This will probably bring the network and its concepts to many people and also a matter of public debate.
I don’t think it will ever be mainstream. It’s confusing enough for IT literate people with a basic understanding of the concept, I can’t see it ever getting popular with the wider public.
My main concern is the overlap between lemmy instances, meaning me and my mate can be looking at for example a channel named ‘news’ and see different contents because we are on different instances. So you either subscribe to all news channels on all major instances and see lots of duplicated posts, or miss out on some posts.
Well most of the complexity would be hidden. For example the Mastodon mobile client hides much of it. You can even sign up for a server there.

Yeah there has been much debate going on about that here
Facebook’s new AI stickers can generate child soldiers, Elmo with a knife::Instagram, Messenger AI feature goes viral for potentially offensive user-created stickers.
Less than a week after Meta unveiled AI-generated stickers in its Facebook Messenger app, users are already abusing it to create potentially offensive images and sharing the results on social media, reports VentureBeat.
In particular, an artist named Pier-Olivier Desbiens posted a series of virtual stickers that went viral on X on Tuesday, starting a thread of similarly problematic AI image generations shared by others.
Meta uses its new Emu image synthesis model to create them and has implemented filters to catch many potentially offensive generations.
This isn’t the first time AI-generated imagery has inspired threads full of giddy experimenters trying to break through content filters on social media.
It’s difficult to catch all the potentially harmful or offensive content across cultures worldwide when an image generator can create almost any combination of objects, scenarios, or people you can imagine.
If past instances are any indication, when something offensive gets wide attention, the developer typically reacts by either taking it down or strengthening built-in filters.

No search engine has a “single point of entry”. Every search engine has Cache servers all over the world at almost every major IXP. Nothing would prevent a federated service from operating the same way. Cloudflare or literally any form of loadbalancer or load balancing service could be used to redirect queries to fedisearch (or whatever the service name would be) to the local instance by IP geolocation. Authentication can just be forwarded to the home server via SAML, thats also where the settings can be stored and queried at login time by the local instance. SAML assertions are very scalable, and there needs to be no global login server, since every users login query can be forwarded to his home instance, where his profile is loaded. The full search index could be put into a blockchain that every local instance joins - every instance crawls their area and publishes new results to the chain. You seem to know very little about how the internet works, yet you accuse me of raging.
That the foss community can manage things like that has been proven for years. Debian mirror server network works in a similar way (they run their own loadbalancer ofc), while being cryptographically secure. And if you wanna see a federated login network like i described in action, just go to pubs.acs.org/action/ssostart
All these parts i described are existing technology and in global use. The combination is not, but there is nothing that would prevent a foundation from implementing search like this.
There’s some reckless recommendations to try psychedelics in here; be cautious with things classified under that name, because there are some VERY nasty chemicals getting pumped out by mafia chemists (some of whom work for large pharma corporations) and pushed under the name of relatively benign substances.
So first off, be sure you know what chemical is actually in the specific pill/blotter/tab you are considering eating.
Second, once you know what you’re dealing with, understand the cautions and protocols involved in using that particular one. I won’t start rattling them off, the information is out there.
That being said, a gram of mushrooms is safe for nearly everyone of normal adult physiology, and it’s pretty easy to tell if you’re looking at and gagging on mushrooms.
I was severely depressed at one point a couple decades ago and a chocolate containing a couple grams of mushrooms at a Folk Festival pulled me out of it for a good while and filled my head with thoughts of what was possible rather than what was not.
If you don’t smoke weed, try smoking some weed, if it’s safe to do where you are. It’s more of a momentary thing and if you don’t like it, most folks can handle waiting it out. This video is perfect for that situation, IMO. It can definitely be a heavy thing if you go too far too soon, but you’ll come back fine with a story to tell, or to never tell.
The more general proposition, which is that these chemicals can kinda shake you loose mentally, is true, but whether that is a good or a bad thing depends on who you are, how in control and confident you feel about life and the world, your immediate environment when you are on them (many end up taking these drugs at noisy parties full of drunkards, which are not the best places to be tripping balls), and many other factors.
For instance, your talk of the adult mask vs the child you cannot find might be exactly what’s happening, or it might be words you’ve put on some other mental block or bit of cognitive dissonance which you do not yourself understand yet. If that were the case, it would be quite possible for a dose of psychedelics to cause your mind to completely drop the veil of delusion, and cause you to look at that reality in the flash of a moment, with no time to mentally prepare for it, and that can be a terrifying experience for some, when reality intrudes on something that they didn’t realize was foundational to their understand of the world, and vulnerable in that way.
The long term effects of such an experience can likewise be very good, very bad, or completely neutral. We all have these masses of jelly inside our skulls and actually we are those masses of jelly.
Going to lie down because it’s hot as balls in my apartment and also because I’m just exhausted from not sleeping great. Thus why this is being posted randomly in the middle of the day. I was going to post this tonight but god knows if I’ll even be awake....
I really don’t agree with your characterization there.
Her name might be weird to us but this is an alternate future with aliens so a girl being called Michael is not that strange. Nor would I say it’s a calling card of a Mary Sue. She doesn’t have any unique powers at all either. She’s just flat human woman. Being related to a previous character also isn’t really the hallmark of a Mary Sue. As for no flaws, she has an enormous amount. I would also say that she doesn’t even have a dislike of authority. She has a problem with managing her own authority and overstepping others. When given an order she’ll comply, mostly. There are a handful of instances in which she doesn’t and there are massive repercussions for that. Her flaws run pretty deep. Emotional insecurity and emotional instability due to her upbringing. A problem with not knowing when to stop to the point that she has endangered herself or the crew on a few occasions. She makes rash decisions. She doesn’t ask for help when she needs it and she often rejects help when it’s given. She will take on responsibility for herself that is unnecessary. Spock even makes fun of that in Season 2.
Also the bit about flaws that are supposed to make her more endearing. I honestly cannot think of a single example of any of them throughout the show, especially when everyone reacts to her with utter hatred. I didn’t like her either at the start of the show but that’s sort of the point. She’s built as a character that’s meant to be redeemed, to start off at a low point and an embarassment and to see their character development. Shows don’t work like they do 30 years ago. Characters can’t really come fully formed in an episodic TV show. You need to leave room to grow. Starting off with a character that was fucking up catastrophically is honestly not that much different than what they did with Barclay. It was just done on a larger scale.
I also disagree with the characterization of ‘Mary Sue’ because she’s not the sole person to fix everything. She has never been the sole person to fix everything. She is a person who fixes things but she’s a part in the machine. Throughout Season 3 and 4 you get to see a lot more of the other crew and spend time with them instead of Michael, but they were still there making the massive decisions that made an impact in Season 1 and 2. We just didn’t know them as well. If anything, Michael is the antithesis of a Mary Sue simply because she’s the person who causes so many problems in Season 1.
Honestly I don’t think you’d like Season 3 or 4 if you already seem to hate every fiber of the character.
I think grouping communities on different instances by name would be one solution. There’s multiple “linux” communities on different instances and one has to subscribe to each on in order to see posts from them. My problem with your stance is that you seem very quick to jump at “bigoted hate speech from LGBTQ+ people”
Show me a Christian or conservative acting like a bigot in this post, community, or even instance and I will gladly call them out. I am sure a few are hiding somewhere around here but they are few and far between. I do understand that there are instances where it is more common from them, but I do not regularly visit those places.
admittedly, but understandably, quite vitriolic - responses to that trauma.
This is my main issue right here. None of this conversation would be happening u/I_Fart_Glitter had just acknowledged that u/gravitas_deficiency had spit out some vitriolic bigotry instead of defending. Their opinions may be understandable to you, but a public News forum is the wrong place to be spewing that kind of bigotry. If they gravitas has unresolved issues they need to get off their chest, there are plenty of appropriate forums for it.
This fear mongering is reinforced every single Sunday when they go to their church and get told these things directly by their leadership
This may be true for many Christians, but there are millions of American Christians that believe quite the opposite and would never tolerate that in a church.
I live in BFE Texas and there are ten Affirming Churches in the area; five of them are within about 45 minutes of me. As a comparison there are only two Cowboy Churches in the same area. Every major City I checked had several Affirming Churches.
A belief system is much more mutable than intrinsic characteristics like gender identity, skin color, and sexuality
Belief is as fundamental to a person as sexuality or gender identity. Some people’s beliefs, gender identity, and sexuality change several times through their lives, others stick with the one assumed at birth, and anywhere in between.
assume you simply misspoke and meant “gender identity”.
You are right, I meant transitioning gender identity, not “gender transition”
based only on the inherently Christian idea that your parents are the sole deciders in the welfare of their children
What? I am sure there are cultures and religions where something different would be the norm, but do any of them represent a significant chunk of the world’s population? I did a bit of web-searching but can’t seem to find anything remotely related to this. I am getting swamped with references to child welfare laws and related court cases.
what’s the transitional stance between “trans rights are human rights” and “we need to eradicate gender ideology from the public world”?
This is the first time I have gotten this deep into trans topics in a loooong time, but off the top of my head, I see two middle grounds between those stances.
“If you want to live your life as a different sex than you were assigned at birth, that is fine but don’t expect everyone else to agree with or support that choice.”
“Let adults live their lives as the sex they choose, but kids need to wait until they are out of high school if their parents refuse to accept it.”
I am sure there are other middle grounds between those stances even if both sides are offended by them.
How might it impact them? That brings me to your direct question.
Who does trans identity affect other than the trans person?
Really? Is this just a setup to call me a bigot instead? Fine, I will express the opinions I have seen or heard from women who could probably be described as TERFs even if they don’t see themselves as such, but only with a spoiler tag and a few caveats.
Trigger warning. These are not my personal feelings. If someone taking oppositional stances or undercutting your self-identity will hurt you, please do not click this.Caveat: I am neither a woman nor trans, nor do I have daughters or sisters, nor have I ever had any close trans friends or family, only regular acquaintances, nor am I strongly opinionated about whether trans-women are actually women. I really do not have a leg to stand on when taking a stance around this issue. Another caveat: These are areas where the belief of what a trans person actually is controls the perspective. If you think a trans-woman is a woman, full stop, then this doesn’t make any sense at all. If you believe that a trans-woman is a man that prefers to live as a woman then it does, so in an effort to answer your question, I am going to frame it from that perspective. A final caveat, from my admittedly limited perspective these particular issues only typically apply to trans-women and not usually trans-men. Though I am sure there are some exceptions to that. First, the first woman X. I happened to have a conversation with a relatively young lady that went on a rant about Biden naming Rachel Levine as the first woman 4 star general of the Public Health Services Human Corps. She made quite the impassioned rant that it was undercutting women everywhere to call a “biological male” the first woman anything. Second, women’s sports. The Riley Gaines and Lia Thomas thing last year was hard to miss. The main point of women’s sports seems to be related to fields where men absolutely dominate the standings. Though there are definitely some women’s leagues for certain things where I can’t see how it would matter. As I understand it, many men’s leagues around the world have no rule against women, it is just exceptionally rare that a woman is selected for them. The NHL for example has had exactly one female player and it was for an exhibition game back in the 90s. Should leagues be based off of physical size like boxing? Or should there be a testosterone check? No idea, but some people assigned female at birth definitely think it affects them. Third, the old bathroom example. Men are feared in our society. Every one of us is viewed as a potential rapist. Women feel exceptionally uncomfortable in certain situations where a man is present or might be. It isn’t right, but it is the way things are. As long as bathrooms exist in their current form, some women, and some parents of young girls, are not going to be okay with people they see as men using the one for ladies.
