Fellow pirates, does anyone have any good antivirus recommendations? Looking to get one but I’m not too sure which one is legit and not just a bunch of bloatware. Thanks in advance
You’re SOL if you’re a spear phishing target. But otherwise?
Also looking bad… Frankly, AVs must fulfill an impossible purpose, and they’re horrible at it. If you ask any AV dev how to bypass their AV at a conference, they can give you a magic file size above which their AV gives up. Don’t wanna tank the performance of your computer, let’s pray that that chunky file is safe. Guess why malware devs deliver their malware in a compressed archive with a suspiciously good compression rate.
Many AV vendors spend a disproportionate amount of time on detection of public toolkits, such as Metasploit. But they suck at detecting everything else, literally. If it’s private, they don’t detect it for a long time. Malware devs have been using the same techniques to evade AVs over and over again, yet they can’t figure out a way to block it. Even if I rig the odds in AVs favor by uploading shit to VirusTotal, only one thinks that my malware with Metasploit payload is malicious, months after the upload.
Now in fairness, VirusTotal only does static analysis. Sucks for AVs that you can call arbitrary, legit functions between malicious ones to confuse the behavioral analysis. Or wait a minute or two for the analysis to give up. Or embed malicious code into legit applications. Or hell, go wild with Java or other more exotic interpreter languages as most AVs don’t check for them at all. Or… hear me out… abuse legit apps for illegitimate purposes! If you’ve got AnyDesk, force it to give the attackers unattended access to your computer.
Thank you for your time, and I hope your trust in AVs is forever shaken. As it should be.
Yeah, it's kind of ridiculous when you consider how at odds Jesus is with most of what capitalism entails. He didn't stutter when he said it's impossible for a wealthy person to get into heaven. He was unambiguously against accumulated wealth. His belief was that if you had resources to help people, you had an obligation to do so. If you kept wealth, then you were failing that obligation.
Granted, I'm an atheist, but I'm tired of the right wing Christianity in the US. Any person who actually followed Christianity, and didn't just use it as an excuse to support their hatred and biases, would undoubtedly vote against Republicans, abortion rights notwithstanding.
How authentic are forums like these actually? With the rise of AI chatbots, internet interaction feels more fake than ever before. Why should I post here my opinions and thoughts, share articles etc. when probably most of you are just chatbots?
Distinguishing between a comment written by a human and one generated by a bot can sometimes be challenging, as bots are becoming increasingly sophisticated. However, there are several factors you can consider to help you determine whether a comment was likely written by a human or a bot:
Language and Coherence: Human-generated comments often have a natural flow, including emotions, anecdotes, and personal experiences. Bots might produce text that seems more formulaic, lacking the nuances of human communication.
Grammar and Spelling: While bots can produce grammatically correct text, they might struggle with certain uncommon phrases, idioms, or context-specific grammar. Excessive spelling or grammatical errors can be a sign of bot-generated content.
Response Time: Bots can reply almost instantly, whereas humans might take a bit more time to compose a response. If you notice extremely rapid replies consistently, it could indicate automation.
Contextual Understanding: Bots might have difficulty understanding and responding appropriately to nuanced or context-dependent comments. If a comment seems to miss the point or misunderstand the conversation, it might be bot-generated.
Repetitive Phrasing: Bots might reuse certain phrases or sentences across different comments. Look for patterns of repetition that could indicate automated content.
Unusual Links or Promotions: Bots might include links to unrelated or suspicious websites. Be cautious of comments that promote products, services, or links that don’t seem relevant to the discussion.
Generic Content: Bots often generate content that’s generic and lacks personalization. Human comments are more likely to contain personal stories, emotions, and unique perspectives.
Complexity and Depth: Human-generated comments can often delve into more complex discussions, while bot-generated content might stay at a surface level or provide generic responses.
Unusual Timing: If a comment is posted at an odd time (e.g., during the night when most people are asleep), it could be an indicator of automated activity.
Response to Specific Prompts: Bots are often trained to respond to specific prompts or keywords. If a comment seems to be overly focused on a particular keyword or topic, it might be bot-generated.
Remember that the line between human-generated and bot-generated content is becoming increasingly blurred, with more advanced AI systems capable of mimicking human communication. It’s always good to exercise critical thinking and use multiple factors to make an informed judgment. If in doubt, you might also try engaging the commenter in more nuanced or unexpected conversation to see how they respond.
While Baldur's Gate 3 is being widely celebrated by fans and developers alike, some are panicking that this could set new expectations from fans. Good.
I don’t believe some people were tricked but we’re a victim of their own success. Take Alan Moore and Watchman for example. He signed the deal that he would get the rights to the book back once it went out of print as that’s how the industry model worked at the time. The book was so popular that it’s stayed in print for the last 40 odd years, so the rights didn’t revert. Maybe DC should have renegotiated things in light of that, but I see that he and they went into the deal on good faith based on industry realities at the time.
In the end the new GeForce RTX 4060 graphics card ended out just slightly above the Radeon RX 7600 in terms of overall performance. Oddly enough the US makes it back in many ways as it's being fulfilled by US military contractors. So it's not as much of a loss financially as it seems. It's also geopolitically a good cause as bolstering support in Europe has netted a ton of contracts Russia was fulfilling for gas and coal. Ukraine is also a US ally and likely future member of both the EU and NATO, so it makes sense to support them when invaded for absolutely no rhyme or reason by pretty much the most consistent adversary of the US throughout modern history. But I'm sure whatever you said makes sense too.
I’m kinda surprised SUSE is going in on this. They kind of do their own thing, so making RHEL-compatible packages seems a little odd. But whatever, as long as openSUSE doesn’t turn into Fedora, I’m happy.
Lottery’s the expected value is always lower than the prize of a ticket.
I mean, of course it is? Zero-effort sources of income kind of have to have a net negative expected value. Or else nobody would have any reason to do anything.
Now you could definitely argue that the low-odds of winning aren’t made entirely clear to the customers, but I know a lot of people pay their $2 a week just for the high of fantasizing about what it would be like to win.
Just out of curiosity. I have no moral stance on it, if a tool works for you I’m definitely not judging anyone for using it. Do whatever you can to get your work done!

I am curious why the allowance of anti-LGBT viewpoints is so controversial. As stated above, all of the basic rules of civility are still being enforced.
Because the people that are calling everyone else “transphobic” and “fascists” and “nazis” can’t see that they’re the ones being fascists by trying to censor all differing views. They can’t handle having people with different opinions and viewpoints, often because they can’t actually defend their odd views themselves, so they prefer to kick up a stink and have all different opinions banned.

So… A boring, odd dialogued version of “Solar Opposites”?
“That’s right, I’ve been talking this whole time. I’m the one holding the Pupa. My name’s Korvo. This is-this is my show. I just dropped the Pupa. Do you see me? (stammers) This is ridiculous. I hate Earth. It’s a horrible home.”
What, 2023-223 for the 223rd day of the year 2023? That… is oddly appealing for telling the actual progress of the year or grouping. No silly “does this group have 31, 30, 29 or 28 members”, particularly the “is this year a multiple of four, but not of 100, unless it’s also a multiple of 400?” bit with leap days.
You’ll have oddities still, no matter which way you slice it, because our orbit is mathematically imperfect, but it’s a start.
I’m an android user and Apple maps has become a real problem numerous times in the past for me. My daily work involves me and multiple people traveling from one place to another and meeting at odd places (event production). And people using Apple maps can go from something simple as them not being able to find a destination in a search to being sent to the wrong location way far away, tricked into going down over way streets, and the most annoying, directed straight into bumper to bumper traffic. Ugh, everyone learns the first time but still…
I used linux in the past, both privately and work-related, but the last time was over 10 years ago, so I’m a bit out of touch. I am in need of a new PC, but it’ll be a good year before I have the funds, so for now I am making due with an i5 7500 and a gtx 1660. I do have 32 GB so there’s that. I finally feel confident...
I’d say about 95 percent of my steam collection works with little to no tweaking required these days. Skyrim works, throw any mods you want at it. Witcher 3 runs great. RDR2 and any civ 1-6 all run perfectly. Baulders Gate 3 runs smooth as butter.
There’s the odd game here and there that doesn’t work well or at all but most things just work. I think the main thing that doesn’t work is anticheat enabled online games. I don’t play those though so I can’t really comment on their state of play outside of that.
@axnxcamr@dweebish@pathfinder@Moondancer@actuallyautistic When I was in secondary school (in the late 70s/early 80s) the concept of boundaries wasn't in the mainstream at least where I lived. It literally wasn't a thing I understood until more than a decade later. Value was placed on being strong in the face of bullying. Showing emotion or that it had any effect meant more bullying.
Bullying was just part of life that some kids had to deal with. Authorities were aware of it but only intervened in extreme situations believing that the child would be targeted more if adults stepped in. The one time a teacher stood up for me still makes me emotional when I think about it.
I don't think it would have made a difference then for the same reason I don't think it would now, either. I'm an odd duck and viewed as such. Some people are willing to put up with me to a point, but it's not a high priority. I don't see how having a disability descriptor changes that. If anything, it gives another reason to stear clear.
If you have no idea who that is it is a collection some of the most highly regarded economists in the world. They universally turn their back in the policy. You are arguing with the consensus of the largest group of academic economists we currently have
It is odd that you are accusing me of being an AnCap for representing perhaps the least controversial opinion in academic economics. Perhaps you should look into taking even just 101 which MIT has on line for free to rectify your inexperience and lack of education.
