I came to suggest this one as well. I think about this book from time to time and it’s another one that they force on US high school students before they’re really ready to understand the themes within. I read it in high school and the only thing I remembered was the last chapter because something odd occurs, and I didn’t remember it because of any emotional or philosophical part but because “ew gross”.
I re-read it as a an adult and I loved the book. It’s depressing but truly I think it’s a great insight into the cause of the depression and the migration West. It may not be the most in depth explanation and doesn’t address the issues in the stock market, but it covers the western experience very well.
Beyond that, I haven’t read any other books on the topic but I can recommend the American History Tellers episodes if you are OK with listening. I love the series and if nothing else they will list a series of sources at the end of their episodes that you could reference. You can get it for free from most podcast sources
For as long as I could remember, computers had been a fascination for me. The hum of their fans, the glow of their screens—it was a world of possibilities and connections. So when Roy Schestowitz, my eccentric and tech-savvy boyfriend, proposed an unconventional plan to spend a month dumpster diving for computer equipment, I...
Developing world needs an alternative to Chinese tech::In April 2022, the United States launched its “Declaration for the Future of the Internet.” It asserts that human rights and democratic values must remain
As more and more states pass laws targeting "pornographic material" in books and online, they are repeatedly running up against a problem: The Bible has not just a few passages that could be considered indecent
Most of the video games I’ve played were pretty good. The only one I can think of that I didn’t like was MySims Kingdom for the Nintendo DS. Dropped that pretty quickly. It was a long while ago, but I’ll guess it was because there were too many fetch quests and annoying controls.
My go-to for this is Resistance: Fall of Man. Invisible walls everywhere, a cover system and a health system that were absolutely at odds with a gun that shoots enemies through walls, and an uninteresting story told in boring slideshows. The only reason I played through it is that my college roommate and I were broke and needed another co-op game after we finished all of the good ones.
It’s finicky stuff for sure. And the texture is odd. Apparently there are a few different kinds, some glow better than others, and they’re all a little weird. Some are more plastic like. This glows pretty well (it’s brighter in person than in the photo) but it also fades kinda quick.
Windows not having a built in free RTF editor is notable
Yeah, that is a bit odd, but then again when’s the last time you’ve seen something other than a cut-rate eBook in RTF? Everything is either some variant of plain text or a DOC file these days.
Plus, it’s rare that you ever need to edit RTF files. Read, sure, but that could be handled by Word Viewer, which is free.
EDIT: Right, they’re discontinuing the viewers, but apparently they have a cloud-based online thing that’s free? Sucks if you live somewhere with crap internet I guess.
I agree, despite Psychonauts 1 being one of my favorite games ever.
Psychonauts 2 against all odds takes a classic and improves it in almost every way while retaining what made the original great. It’s a very rare feat in gaming, or really any media. Psychonauts 2 is an absolute triumph.
I was thinking about that when I was dropping my 6 year old off at some hobbies earlier - it’s pretty much expected to have learned how to ride a bicycle before starting school, and it massively expands the area you can go to by yourself. Swimming. My brother in law is from India and he never learned how to swim due to him growing up in a place with only one extremely dirty river and no other lakes or swimming pools near his family. Apparently no one in his family can swim. He kinda can swim now but it still looks funny. A bit like I must have looked from the outside when I learned to swim - as a six years old. I always found this very odd because the dude is smart, hard working and has a degree but it took years and him becoming a dad to realize that swimming is something pretty much everyone can.
Oddly it’s actually very common (and required in some areas) in the US to study more than one language also. What is extremely uncommon are opportunities to use a second language, so very few people actually ever become fluent. It’s a shame really.
Exactly. Unless things have changed dramatically, one or two years of a foreign language is a requirement in high school, and there are more opportunities in lower K-12 these days from what I hear. However, you’re right that this is not especially helpful without some immersion, and the practice of trading your kids to a foreign family for a year is far less common. Then, after K-12, opportunities to practice greatly diminish.
The German mother of a good friend moved to the US West coast when she was a young adult, married, and had my friend. She never lost her German accent. When I was in my early 20s, I had the opportunity to live and work in Germany for a couple of years, and when I came back, I was fairly fluent - enough to pass as a native from a “different region.” I visited my friend when I returned, and tried to have a conversation with her mother in German; she sadly informed me that she had forgotten most of her German, and could no longer converse… there are few opportunities to speak in German on the West coast, and even native language skills attrophy if unused.
In a related annecdote, when I first returned to the states, I’d sometime fail to remember the English words for the odd thing, like “trash can.” All I could remember was the German word for it.
All thay has gone away. Years later, I can barely hold basic conversations in German. Maybe some people have an ability to retain language skills without practice, but I believe it’s far more common to lose fluency you once had.

The way publishing works, it is easy for Amazon to just check who is responsible for those books. Odd that they are not, I thought the US was a more litigious place.
When Battlefield 1942 came out I remember having a dream of doing an airdrop as part of operation market garden and freaking out after I landed that I couldn’t see my hud.
It was an odd dream.
What I want to know is if they have to keep paying if the kids never graduate. It’s Texas so it seems like the odds are pretty high you could be paying for some dudes kids until they either get shot in a bar or do a lethal fentanyl hit.
Odd consideration, but… I use 16Gb of ram and I have zero swap space and I’ve never seen a freeze in the three years this system has been assembled.
You won’t see big problems until you use most of the ram, then you’re toast. Also Linux (if that’s what you’re using) prefers to have more cache at the expense of swapping out pages. There’s a lot of rarely used code on many apps that can be safely swapped out to get you more cache.
Chinese socialist revolution before Mao’s leadership is pretty legit. Chen Duxiu, Li Dazhao, are all real socialists, they truely cares about the worker and envisions a better future for China.
So no revolution at all? 95% of the critical mass and anything that can be called a large scale revolution (with organizational successes of the masses) happened in China in the 30s and had little to do with Chen Duxiu and Li Dazhao previous work ,no matter how admirable. The CPC almost died and was built back up multiple times by the time Mao succeeded and Mao was vital in that. You cant get more legit than revolution under Mao. Under probably the worst odds and situation any communist party and revolution had to face they endured, made correct and miraculous choices and political and military manuvers at every turn and won, uplifting and liberating hundreds of millions of peasants and women. No Mao, no successfull revolution in China and no emancipation of the masses. Good luck doing the long march and outmanuvering the KMT from the countryside by amassing immense support with Chen Duxiu’s ideas about the peasantry.
Chen Duxiu, Li Dazhao may have envisioned a better socialist future for China but they were and would have been unable to make it happen. They lacked both the military genius, the correct analysis on the peasantry or the rhetoric and vision of mass politics that Mao had that allowed the CPC to pull through against all odds and win
This honestly strikes me as odd. I understand you may not have liked his music, but he released a new album in 2020 and was actively touring earlier this year. What made you think he had died? Or do you just assume everyone you haven’t heard from lately is dead?
Strange, I’m about 12 hours in and apart from minor glitches like odd character movement every now and then it’s been pretty smooth sailing. What are you guys running into?
Cp2077 will be an odd case for me always. It wasn’t literally perfect but I couldn’t complete two gigs and I experienced some graphical glitches and that was it, incredibly lucky somehow… I 100%'d the game pretty much at launch, though I didn’t do all of the possible endings I did do about 3.

Many of those jobs were already killed off by IVR systems.
Any company that still has a live “operator” type job… Well, it’s usually piled onto another role, like receptionist. Many small to mid sized businesses basically hire a receptionist as a catch all for other jobs. Someone to accept deliveries, answer the phone, greet people coming in, do little odd jobs around the office.
Reduction of the workforce by turning a once straight forward job like receptionist into an agglutination of smaller jobs that they don’t want to have to pay someone to do, is the norm. Eliminating positions and entire swarms of people with a single individual who both doesn’t really do a job, but does every job.
