“Stop Making Sense,” directed by Jonathan Demme, is widely considered to be one of the finest examples of the form, a joyful documentation (and celebration) of Talking Heads’ 1983 tour supporting their album “Speaking in Tongues.” The Toronto festival screening marked the debut of A24’s new restoration of the film ahead of its theatrical and IMAX rerelease later this month.
From the opening image — of Byrne’s scuffed-up white sneakers striding onto the stage, as he sets down a boombox and announces, “Hi, I got a tape I wanna play” — seeing “Stop Making Sense” in IMAX was like seeing it anew.
The image, blown up from the original 35-millimeter negatives, was crisp and rich; the sound, an early digital audio recording, felt like it had been laid down last night.
By the midpoint, this odd little man and his friends have become a family, and when Byrne sings the kind and welcoming lyrics of “This Must Be the Place” (“Home/is where I want to be/but I guess I’m already there”), it’s as heartfelt and moving an emotional beat as you’ll find in any narrative film.
But he’s far from the only attraction, and the detail of the IMAX restoration (coupled with Demme’s preference for long takes and wide shots) provides the viewer with plenty of opportunities to observe the dynamics, throughout the frame, between the group, additional musicians like the keyboardist Bernie Worrell, and the crew.
The rowdy crowd applauded every number, cheered for the band’s introductions and clapped along with the breakdown in “Take Me to the River.” One guy hollered, “Encore!” when the movie ended.

It’s odd too. A lot of places have offices in various cities too. So you can live in one city, and your team works in a different city or state. So their micromanaging isn’t possible since you’ll be at a completely different office. It just doesn’t make sense. So we enter the “quiet layoff” stages.
Next headline will read, “Have companies started their own version of quiet quitting by forcing employees back to the office in an effort to get them to quit or he fired.”
Left feeling a bit empty after playing it for the first time a few months ago(why did I wait so long?) I am afraid no JRPG will be able to surpass it. Would love to have a discussion about similar games that reach the same quality level (Note: I have already played Final Fantasy VI ).
I agree with this assessment a lot. The art and environmental design is gorgeous. The music is top notch (the battle theme is a bit polarizing though). In terms of production it's seriously well put together, for the most part. But, it suffers a lot of the worst excesses of 90s JRPG design, with a meandering, nonsensical plot and a battle system that's more interested in being fiddly than in being fun. It feels like one of the worst examples of a company just straight up not understanding the appeal of a game and making a "sequel" that could easily have been called something else. As a recommendation for someone just coming off of Chrono Trigger, I can hardly imagine something worse, oddly.
What I mean by this, is instead of when you fail and are met with a game over, the game finds some way to keep it going. Instead of being forced to reset to a previous save or an autosave checkpoint, the game’s story continues in an interesting path. Are there any games like this?...
If your colony is close to collapsing, you have a chance for a “Man in Black” event where a stranger in black comes in and, hopefully, turns it all around.
But what if the MiB doesn’t trigger? Hell, what if they’re a pacifist pyromaniac with a meth addiction who wandered into a mass of cannibal sex slavers having a rave over the ashes and dies?
Someone will eventually come. It might take in-game years, but eventually, a pawn will come and want to make those ruins home. You can try to rebuild.
Admittedly, it can be quicker to just call it done and roll up a fresh colony over watching the seasons pass, but I like how even a complete loss doesn’t mean the story is done.

Oh, man, I just realized the machine learning verbiage like saying “trained” instead of “programmed” is being embraced by tech companies in part to avoid responsibility for human choices.
Not that the coral reef robot scientists are doing that. They’re obviously using machine learning. I just found it odd to read they “trained” a non-living thing.
I’ve found that increasing how speedily i perform my exercise has diminishing returns and only increases the odds of injuring oneself
but when i go through the motions slowly, it is then that I feel optimally exerted. 20 slow squats pay off better than 20 fast ones. or perhaps even 40.
the goal isn’t to feel pain, but to accomplish the work. And furthermore, if we injure ourselves, then we lose progress being unable to work out while convalescing.
(i mean, like, individual muscle fibers are going to tear and then be mended and make the muscle stronger over time but it’s gotta be moderated and also we never want to damage our ligaments, tendons, or cartilage)
Seriously though I’ve never been good at anything artistic. I’m a programmer by trade and occasional dabble in the odd personal project lately, and I have a lot of hobbies. I experiment with electronics, I’m an (really really) amateur blacksmith. I feel like those engage the parts of my brain art might, but I don’t feel like they’re any sort of self expression. They’re more academic pursuits, I do them to learn and learning itself is kinda the end goal.
To be honest I’m not sure I know what “expressing myself” in an artistic sense would be. I use words to convey my thoughts and emotions but I’m certainly no writer.
New guy at my job, polish dude. He seemed decent enough, just a bit… odd… but most of us were; after all, we were the kind of people who are willing to work on ships on the wrong side of the world for weeks, sometimes months at a time.
I trained him to do the job I did, so he could run opposite of my shift, with some assistance from the chief tech and various others. The rest of the crew were pretty experienced, so it made it easier when he needed help with the more complex stuff. He did reasonably OK for a newhire. Nothing spectacularly good, but nothing spectacularly bad either.
Until the crewing department told us he had been arrested back home, multiple counts of murder, and we were unlikely to have him onboard again, so we needed to train his replacement.
Turned out he was a serial killer who killed people for their properties. He’s in prison now, and I’m sure you can google the person. I’m not sure what his actual name was, but we called him Winny. Any poles here who happen to remember the case and could link a news article? This happened roughly 10 years ago.
You might be correct, although I would have expected the 4y ago part to not be a column in the database.
It would more likely have a CreatedAt column of type DateTime. Then using something like moment in the client you can format to show the date and time since, which makes it strange here that we seemingly have CreatedAt and TimeSinceCreation columns which is odd no?
I didn’t make it sound like dogs react entirely differently. Dogs require a significantly higher dose to have the same effect. You did seem to get that point, so I think we can move on.
This is the dumbest question I’ve heard this week
Great, ok, so you believe cops are passing out and overdosing from touching baggies with suspected fent in it? Because that’s the shit they’re saying constantly. And if you believe this dog story bullshit, you might as well believe those lies too. The odds that the cops are lying are WAY higher than the odds that two junkies fed their dog fent, left the fent where they dog would have eaten it, or told the cops that the dog ate it.
Let me ask you another question. If the cops found the fent on the suspected junkies, how did the dog also eat it? If they had multiple baggies of it, that’s intent to distribute and we would have read that in the article. Yet, we didn’t.
None of this story makes sense to anybody with even a modicum of knowledge of people that actually use drugs. Be more skeptical in life, it’ll serve you well.
According to Hans-Kristian Arntzen, a prominent open-source developer working on Vkd3d, a DirectX 12 to Vulkan translation layer, Starfield is not interacting properly with graphics card drivers.
I’m inclined to believe this, and this likely isn’t even the whole extent of it. I’ve been playing on a Series X, but decided to check it out on my Rog Ally. On low, at 720p with FSR2 on, I’d get 25-30fps in somewhere like New Atlantis. I downloaded a tweaked .ini for the Ultra preset and now not only does the game look much better, but the city is up closer to 40fps, with most other areas being 45-60+. Makes me wonder what it was they thought was worth the massive cost that the default settings give, with no real visual improvement.
Another odd thing, if I’m playing Cyberpunk or something, this thing is in the 90%+ CPU and GPU utilization range, with the temps in the 90c+ range. Starfield? GPU is like 99%, CPU sits around 30%, and the temp is <=70c, which basically doesn’t happen playing any other “AAA” game. I could buy Todd’s comments if the frame rate was crap, but this thing was maxed out… but not getting close to full utilization on a handheld with an APU indicates something less simple.
I’m hoping the work from Hans finds its way to all platforms (in one way or another), because I’d love to use the Series X but 30fps with weird HDR on a 120hz OLED TV actually makes me a little nauseous after playing for a while, which isn’t something I commonly have a problem with.
they might just carry on until this planet is molten
The odds of true runaway warming are very low, the planet has both been much hotter and had much higher CO2 levels in the past. The Holocene is actually a cool period, geologically.
We’re just going to make it too hot to grow enough crops to feed the world.

AFAIK vore is a rare fetish where someone gains sexual gratification from imagining swallowing someone whole (or imagining themselves being swallowed whole). Like the Bilquis scenes from American Gods, which I found oddly arousing.
Your “lefty” content prompts the algorithm to show you opposing content, which is literally what people are clamoring for, because odds are high that you will engage with it, and engagement is the only thing it looks for.
If you only liked Trump shit it’d show you a minority of left-leaning content as well.
Not only have there been major bugs with delete of comments not working on other servers, the whole idea of federation is that it gets sent out to any instance that wants a copy - with not even a ‘terms of service’ that is standard on Lemmy.
For such a communist focus that the Lemmy developers have, I’ts so odd that they don’t emphasize that content is public and have it like Wikipedia content contributions. They use GPL license to force people to share their work of the code, but then they turn around and promise privacy that they fail to deliver on given that they don’t even warn newcomers how federation works.
Edit: oh and what is stormfront? Edit 2: the “I have no mouth…” game is also pretty great and was given away for free on GOG a while back so you might already have it, if you keep track of those things. That game is inspired by the book but it is mainly it’s own story.
This is the real reason. Bernie refused to meaningfully cooperative with the party who basically have a policy of allowing members across the widest political spectrum of any party, and then was shocked that they did completely legal and defensible things that might have affected his odds of winning the Primary, a Primary that was still ultimately decided by vote counts that he lost by a landslide. Nobody alienated Bernie (just look at Warren who writes half the bills he supports), he alienated himself.
Do people know why Bernie caucused with the Democrats? Because only about 9% of Americans identify as far left as progressive, and we only win something if we can compromise it with the only political party that works in good faith.
Uh, lower birth rates? …which can be helped along with expanding education and birth control. I’m pretty sure religion and capitalism promote growing populations, if we could reduce the power of either of those, that too could have significant effect.
I find it odd how limited your brain is that you could only conceive of two possibilities, infinite growth or genocide.
