The Biden administration said Friday it would again delay a decision on a regulation aiming to ban menthol-flavored cigarettes, citing the “historic attention” and “immense amount of feedback” on the controversial proposal by the Food and Drug Administration....
I am not a fan of banning things, but I think we all have our exceptions. I guess that makes us all hypocrites.
Cigs I’m torn on, while I think that if someone wants to do it regardless of if it kills them, I think that’s fine. But on the other hand, the chance to spare a new generation of the statistical amount of pain it will cause on seemingly random users.
(SciFi brain kicks in) And what if a cure for all cancers, heart conditions, etc, a world where most diseases were cured, then this talk would have to be revisited.
Back to reality, a world where cancer is often terminal. In that world, where we live, I like the idea of a law like, after X year, people under Y age cannot buy cigs. You can insert your own X and Y, I’m not debating that. I just think that eventually, it would be a long term positive thing for humanity to choose values for X and Y.
You can also define a vector by the equivalent “sides of the right triangle”. In 2D, the x,y coordinates. In computer science, vectors are n-tuples, so they represent a math/physics vector but in n-dimensions.
Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa had called for Lisbon to find ways to compensate its former colonies, including canceling debt. The government says it has not initiated any process to that effect....
It’s not about what somebody’s ancestor did. It’s about what the country as a whole did. Country X had Y policy that oppressed Z group, and has resulted in that group still being impoverished today? Country X is on the hook then. They caused the problem, they need to help clean it up.
You do see why that’s a serious issue right? Before the Server did nothing more than maintain a list of x,y,z coordinates of player positions. Now it’s rendering the entire game space and doing 3d calculations.
That’s several orders of magnitude more complex and costly.
I agree. As much as I agree with the idea of universal basic income - because I think supporting society while reducing the work necessary is something we should aim for, because it's the best way to ensure everyone gets a fair lot in life and because I think it's a necessity with the direction the labour market is heading - this isn't really the kind of thing I want to see in this community, personally. Hell, UBI doesn't really have much to do with the thought of "if X is Y% of Z then 1000X is Y% of 1000Z" - it's just basic maths really (and OP seems to have got the maths wrong, too).
Tbf I’m really not savvy in loans, but I mean any amount of money X that you have to pay back with Y% of interest in Z days. If you take that loan and you know an investment that will guarantee you (Y+1)% then you should borrow money. (That conclusion is of course completely neglecting risk management)
I don’t understand how we’re all using git and it’s not just some backend utility that we all use a sane wrapper for instead.
Everytime you want to do anything with git it’s a weird series or arcane nonsense commands and then someone cuts in saying “oh yeah but that will destroy x y and z, you have to use this other arcane nonsense command that also sounds nothing like you’re trying to do” and you sit there having no idea why either of them even kind of accomplish what you want.
A top Hamas political official told The Associated Press the Islamic militant group is willing to agree to a truce of five years or more with Israel and that it would lay down its weapons and convert into a political party if an independent Palestinian state is established along pre-1967 borders.
Trevor Noah had a great segment on this, about how it always has to be X vs Y. The example he used was cat people and dog people who get into arguments – “why can’t we just agree that they’re both cute?”
Coal-fired power plants would be forced to capture smokestack emissions or shut down under a rule issued Thursday by the Environmental Protection Agency....
Sounds to me like it gives power to corporations to be exempt from regulations.
No.
What it does is instruct Federal Courts to defer to a controlling agencies interpretation of a Law, when reasonable, instead of the Court creating their own interpretation. Chevron Deference is what empowers the EPA to say “The Law didn’t address it but our opinion on this technical matter is that CO2 is a pollutant and we believe that gives us the authority to regulate it.”. A Federal Court will then test the reasonableness of that opinion and say “Yeah, that interpretation sounds reasonable to us.” or “Nah, your interpretation is clearly outside the boundaries of what Congress intended. You need to come up with a better opinion.”
Without Chevron when the EPA shows up in Court and says “The Law didn’t address it but our opinion on this technical matter is that CO2 is a pollutant and we believe that gives us the authority to regulate it.” one Court may agree while 5 more say “The law didn’t directly address this therefore we aren’t going to allow this lawsuit to proceed.” or individual Courts may get farther into the weeds with things like “Well, the law didn’t address it but we feel that under X,Y, & Z circumstances you may have some ability to regulate this.”
The idea behind this was actually a damn good one as it puts the Agency charged with regulating something, who should be EXPERTS in that thing, the ability to decide what should / shouldn’t be happening instead of a Judge who is almost certainly ignorant of that technical specialty.
Ballotpedia has a write up for this that may be easier to understand than the Cornell one you linked to. I’ll quote part of it here.
"Chevron deference, or Chevron doctrine, is an administrative law principle that compels federal courts to defer to a federal agency’s interpretation of an ambiguous or unclear statute that Congress delegated to the agency to administer. "
In most cases most people WANT Chevron to exist because we WANT the specialty agencies, who should be filled with subject matter experts, making decisions related their specialty.
There are a few instances, most spectacularly with the BATFE, where this has gone off the rails, but there’s little question that Chevron is a Net Good.
The world of late stage capitalism. When “scammer” starts to become a common profession… perhaps instead of asking why everyone is becoming a scammer, ask what type of system rewards and necessistates it, and why?
There are hints in this discussion to what is wrong with the world we inhabit that leads people down this path, and that is the picture I want to draw for you.
In short, people are extremely desperate. Some might think this is just how things are, but I happen to be one of the people who thinks it is by design. The richest want to keep the workers hungry, afraid, lacking security, and the house (in which they have financial stake in) can rake in the gains. The intentional applied divisiveness of capitalism.
In that context, I wanted to point out the privileged life that you likely live in order to not realize the desperation that drives someone to capitalize on every financial opportunity available, even the crazy ones. My statement isn’t in favor of making revenue on X, Y, or Z platform, my statement is in critique over your critique of how others earn a living, as well as your disregard for their situation. I was urging you to walk a mental mile in someone else’s shoes.
Also I apologize for mocking you, it’s not personal but I couldn’t resist taking the piss out of your comment.
I only realized that the more I studied other languages, making me reflect on English.
Like, English doesn’t have a future tense. It seems like a pretty basic thing, but in English you say “I’m going to X”. Why do you use the verb ‘to go’ there? Why is that the way English creates a future tense? If you’re headed to the store now: I’m going to the store. If it’s happening later: I’m going to go to the store. WTF is this bullshit? “going to go”? Just stop and think for a second about “going” and “go” in that phrase.
And the verb “to do”, why is that part of questions in English? Statement: You have a dog. Question: Do you have a dog? What does “to do” have to do with any of that? Why is “doing” the verb that somehow is used to turn a statement into a question?
And then there’s “to use”. Using is to take, hold, deploy, consume… so why is it sometimes part of the past tense. Sure, you can say “I walked to school”, but if you want to talk about habits or routines: “I used to walk to school”. Why is “to use” even involved there at all?
That’s not even accounting for spelling and pronunciation which is just ridiculous in English.
We have a letter ‘k’ that reliably makes a certain sound, and a letter ‘s’ that reliably makes another sound. But, a huge variety of words use “c” which can make a ‘k’ sound like cat, or an ‘s’ sound like city. The letter ‘c’ has no sound of its own, it’s just a randomizer machine for one of the other useful sounds. The letter ‘g’ has one sound that no other letter makes, in words like “grip” and “great”. There’s another letter “j” that makes a different sound, like in “jet” and the name “Jim”. But, for some reason, sometimes the “g” makes a “j” sound, so “Jim” and “gym” have the same sound but completely different spellings, leading to bullshit like the confusion over how to pronounce “gif”.
English has roughly 20 vowel sounds, depending on the accent, but the vowel letters are ‘a’, ‘e’, ‘i’, ‘o’, ‘u’, and sometimes ‘y’. So, you’d think that at least those 5/6 are sorted and the other 20 come from combinations, right? Nope. In British English, for some reason “can” and “can’t” get a different vowel sound for the ‘a’, despite “can’t” being a contraction for “can not”, which literally contains “can”. The letter “u” can sound different between “put” and “putt”, even though you’re just tacking a ‘t’ to the end of that combination of letters. If you tack an ‘s’ on the end it doesn’t change, but if you tack an ‘e’ on the end… whoa, an entirely new sound different from both “put” and “putt”.
I’m glad the world is slowly converging on one language that allows everyone to communicate with everyone else, but it sucks that the language that came out on top is English.
If I’m reading that right, that could also say that Instagram is suppressing anti-israel content? It’s just saying that in comparison to Instagram tiktok is showing more x, y, z. But Instagram is absolutely not a neutral point to measure from.
For starters there’s different demographics on each one, but I’m sure you could adjust for that, maybe the study did. But I don’t think you can adjust for the impact the US government has on Meta. I don’t believe for an instant that some US agency isn’t manipulating algorithms or requiring certain tweaks to steer discourse just like they did with US news outlets.
Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....
For years I had that turned on in Windoof 10 as it sounded like: “we see you’re regularly doing X or having problem Y. Here is a way how to make X simpler and a solution for Y.”
Instead it was nothing like that. It was literally nothing at all. Probably they just tried to shove some ads down my throat, which I luckily didn’t see.
But it has become clear enough: it’s not about helping users with useful tips and recommendations. It’s about luring them into buying some stuff.
They can find new clever euphemisms, like EA did with their “surprise mechanics”. But it is what it is: ads, digital noise, a waste of resources and probably one of the last incentives I needed to fully switch to a good Linux distro.
I used Windoof just for gaming anyway. And as I’m already working professionally with Linux, it will hardly be a miss.
Excellent point. It is important to note that anytime employees stand up to employers, you get no shortage of propaganda trying to shout over the top of the issue that these workers dont deserve to be treated better bc of X, Y, or Z.
Like how when actors or athletes try to get a bigger piece of the pie and u get a throng of poors getting mad at them instead of getting mad at the multibillion dollar corporations that are capable of paying them as much.
The Senate on Tuesday passed a long-delayed $95 billion package with wide bipartisan support after both sides of Capitol Hill have struggled for months to send aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan....
There are some legislators who agree with a Ukraine bill and some who agree with an Israel bill. However, some would like to pass only one or the other. So what one does is to create a combined bill and find some number of legislators who will support both. The actual bill, as I recall, isn’t just Ukraine aid and Israel aid, but also Taiwan aid and the TikTok divestment requirement and involved discussions spanning all of the House, Senate, and Biden personally, so there was probably a lot discussion.
It’s not an uncommon practice; part of getting legislation through is figuring out what needs to go in to get enough legislators onboard. “I’ll support X if you support Y.”
They can talk about it if they want to, but we shouldn’t be using them as our only source of information. Curious on why politicians voted X instead of Y? Look it up! See what experts in the field are saying.
You shouldn’t rely on them to tell you why TikTok is a threat the same way we shouldn’t rely on them to inform us on why weakening EPA standards is good for the environment, why taxing foreign trucks is good for the economy, or why drawing voting maps to concentrate demographics is good for democracy.
These politicians probably know enough to make an informed decision if they care to seek out information. They don’t always have the time or desire to do this. If you believe this to be true even one in a hundred times, that covers a handful of politicians for every single piece of legislation that comes out, every single time.
The same way you may care about many things but only know a lot about a few subjects, they legislate everything and people act like they are the experts. Why assume they know what they’re talking about for every single topic?
I think that’s a big part of it, but even putting him and all his BS aside, they haven’t really done much innovating in years. In the mid '10s it seemed like they were making big gains in manufacturing and following up the success of the Model S with the X, Y, and 3 as well as developing the gigafactory and things like the powerwall. Since probably 2019 though, they’ve just been spinning their wheels and stagnating on things like autonomy and building the Cybertruck with no real gain to show for it.
I imagine it won’t be long before he’s ousted though as it provides a convenient scape goat for everything along with shedding dead weight who’s main appeal previously was being outspoken online and “a disruptor” before everything turned to right wing politics.
I’m taking my first international flight this year. I’ve got my passport and bought the plane tickets. However, I noticed that my middle name on the ticket is missing the last 2 letters. So the deal is that they print X characters on tickets for first and middle name and Y more charactersfor the last. As someone with bizarrely long names my middle name often ends up cut in half. You should be fine - the real data associated with your ticket is saved on a server somewhere and there are cultures with multiple middle names that inevitably have far more strange circumstances than you (like names being out of order).
I am a fan of large aquaria, but hatching a cannibalistic manatee egg case in one sounds like a terrible way to become the guy in the math problem with a cart full of X cabbages and Y heads of lettuce if I bought an equal amount of each and spent $154.26 with an 8% tax if cabbages cost $2.23 and lettuce cost $3.98.
Every time I wake up PC from sleep I have to go to bluetooth settings -> select device -> enable connection to get sound on bluetooth speakers (Anker Soundcore). Bluetooth came with MBO and drivers were working out of the box after PopOS install....
While trying to test this on my system, I came across a few issues. I found a more modern and standardized way to check for login after sleep, and have updated my previous comment with a new script. I have new instructions though that are more comprehensive that you can follow.
Create 2 files bluetooth-reconnect.sh and bluetooth-reconnect.service. Using your favorite text editor, edit these files so they will contain the following:
bluetooth-reconnect.sh
<span style="color:#323232;">#!/bin/bash
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">gdbus monitor -y -d org.freedesktop.login1 |
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> (while read x; do
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> if echo "$x" | grep -q "{'LockedHint': <false>}"; then
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> bluetoothctl connect A1:11:22:3A:CD:F1
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> fi
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> done)
</span>
bluetooth-reconnect.service
<span style="color:#323232;">[Unit]
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Description=Reconnect Bluetooth after waking from sleep
</span><span style="color:#323232;">After=default.target
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">[Service]
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Type=simple
</span><span style="color:#323232;">ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/bluetooth-reconnect.sh
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">[Install]
</span><span style="color:#323232;">WantedBy=multi-user.target

Open a terminal in whatever location you created them (you can right click in your file manager and open in terminal, or use cd to navigate). Now move them to the correct locations (you will need sudo privilege for this):
Check to make sure the service started correctly (the “Active:” field should say “active (running)” in green).
<span style="color:#323232;">sudo systemctl status bluetooth-reconnect.service
</span>
This should now do everything automatically. This has been tested and is working on my Fedora Workstation system (uses GNOME). This should be distro independent, unlike my previous answer (and also without the syntax error I had in my initial submission).
