With high interest rates and inflation hitting household budgets,
goes looking for data
Hmm. This is odd. So, the article states that rates of auto repossession were higher than last year.
This says that delinquency rates on auto loans – not quite the same thing, but probably a better sign of financial stress than repossession rate, if anything, were exceptionally high last year, according from this article in late 2023:
Borrowers are falling behind on car loan payments at the highest rate in 27 years. And subprime borrowers—those with credit scores below 640—are struggling the most to keep up with their monthly payments, according to the latest data from Fitch.
This graph shows that delinquency rates were low during COVID-19, but started rising after:
But this shows that loan delinquency in general, not auto loans, is up relative to the past ten years and especially relative to the very low rate during COVID-19, but if anything low over the past 30:
That’d seem to suggest that the issue is specific to auto loans, which is not really what I’d expect if interest rates and inflation are the main factors, as those should be agnostic to type of loan.
looks further
This shows that the interest rate – nominal – on new auto loans is high relative to the past 10 years:
I’d think that things that’d tend to explain something like that would be autos being more expensive than in the past, resulting in them specifically being less-affordable. There are two data points I’d have that support that: I recall from past reading that during and after COVID-19, supply chain disruption resulted in reduced production, which resulted in higher prices for what supply was available, which resulted in used car (as a partial substitute good for new cars) prices rising. Also, the Forbes article above from October 2023 specifically says that auto prices are high (though it doesn’t say whether that’s in real or nominal terms):
Vehicles have also gotten more expensive. The average transaction price of a new car was $47,899 in September, down only slightly from record highs reached earlier in 2023, according to a Kelley Blue Book report. Prices for used cars also remain high, after being driven up dramatically amid supply chain snags in the new car market during the pandemic.
EDIT: Oh, I think I know part of what’s going on. The bit above isn’t saying that auto delinquency rates are the highest they’ve been in 27 years. They’re saying that they’re increasing at the fastest rate that they have in the past 27 years, which is more-understandable, coming off of a period of low interest rates to high interest rates.
Edit: Oh, I did edit it about 30 seconds after posting, to add the first parenthetical. Apologies for outright accusing you of lying. It doesn't display as edited on my instance when done within the first minute. But you replied 5 minutes after my edit, so I think the odds that you loaded the page within 30 seconds of my original reply are too minuscule to be super convincing.
The Linux Mint team has just released Linux Mint 22, a new major version of the free Linux distribution. With Windows 10’s end of support coming up quickly next year, at least some users may consider making the switch to Linux....
I had the linux mint usb boot and then when I did the full install, the wireless internet wouldnt work so I needed a usb adapter. Weird, not a deal breaker just odd.
That would be wonderful and ingenious. I think people who stock those things don't tend to read, and just think about what would be the "nicest" edition (more desirable) as well as the most expensive edition. Although to be honest, the most beautiful bookstore I have ever stepped foot in was full of small and odd paperback books with very intentional and unique designs.
I love cracking open a real book. I actually really dig Penguin Classic Deluxe books, even though they weep if you don't baby them and have printing issues. The choice of typeface, meeting those deckled edges. More, please!
Sorry for being rude, I have just heard the same arguments over and over and over, and I am getting tired of them.
The reason as to why we haven’t built more storage sites is our fear, our fear of radiation, most people don’t understand how radiation works and have seen horrible photos and videos from Chernobyl and think that it is impossible to go there still.
It is the nimby crowd who has messed it up so completely.
Add to that the odd report about how to prevent future humans from the waste sites, something not needed, which plays on the fears.
Nah, browsers are sandboxed to absolute shit it is such a pain in the ass to make an extension just to do a phishing attack or to buy the ownership of one to introduce malicious code.
At most an extension with really broad permissions like read/write contents of any page (a fact that is made obvious upon installation) can replace a link to take you to a phishing page to harvest creds, but thanks to SSL and HTTPS it won’t even work without fifty some odd warnings
I’m trying to get a job in IT that will (hopefully) pay more than a usual 9 to 5. I’m been daily driving Linux exclusively for about 2 1/2 years now and I’m trying to improve my skills to the point that I could be considered a so-called “power user.” My question is this: will this increase my hiring chances...
A couple things: solid state batteries weigh much less. Solid state batteries are 30-50% lighter per kWh. The initial ones will probably be closer to 30% lighter. A 100 kWh battery weighs about 1400 lbs (635 kg). Shaving off 400 lbs is pretty significant and results in much better range for the same battery capacity. The battery pack is likely closer to 150 kWh.
Second thing would be the charge rate. Yes, a supercharger can 250 kW output (not kWh BTW) but a few factors means that they often do not. First thing would be heat. If the charging cable or the battery gets too hot, the the rate slows down. The next thing would be the fact that current batteries have to start at a slow rate and end at a slow rate. Solid state batteries do not have those issue nearly as much and can more consistently hit that 250 kW output for a longer period of time.
This thing, they are likely using 350+ kW chargers. Higher than 350 kW is pretty rare but the odd 400 kW and 450 kW charger does exist.
And doing some more digging, I found that it is from 8% to 80% in 9 minutes. And even then, it does not say it is the same 150 kWh battery that is being charged that fast. This could be marketing crap where it is giving numbers for a ~85 kWh battery to compare it to EVs today. An Ioniq 5 takes about twice as long to go from 10-80% at 350 kW.
Book Review #44 is Lilian Faderman's Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers: A History of Lesbian Life in Twentieth Century America. This is a very detailed look at female relationships over the course of nearly 100 years. And again, I found Faderman's work helpful in understanding their story, too. ☕☕☕☕
They do say that you can contact Intel customer support if you have an affected CPU, and that they’re replacing CPUs that have been actually damaged. I don’t know – and Intel may not know – what information or proof you need, but my guess is that it’s good odds that you can get a replacement CPU. So there probably is some level of recourse.
Now, obviously that’s still a bad situation. You’re out the time that you didn’t have a stable system, out the effort you put into diagnosing it, maybe have losses from system downtime (like, I took an out-of-state trip expecting to be able to access my system remotely and had it hang due to the CPU damage at one point), maybe out data you lost from corruption, maybe out money you spent trying to fix the problem (like, on other parts).
But I’d guess that specifically for the CPU, if it’s clearly damaged, you have good odds of being able to at least get a non-damaged replacement CPU at some point without needing to buy it. It may not perform as well as the generation had initially been benchmarked at. But it should be stable.
So what’s out there for the purposes of women ogling at attractive men? Uuuh, Thunder Down Under and other odd male strip shows? There’s just nothing equivalent in reach and scale for women.
I really feel like you replied without watching the video
That is accurate yes. I've watched Second Thought videos before, and I'm familiar.
because none of that is from the video
The fuck it isn't. I decided it was probably unfair for me to get into too much of a back and forth about the video without having any idea what's in it, even though I am highly confident that it's shit. So, I grabbed the transcript quickly and asked ChatGPT to summarize the whole thing in bullet points. That way I can still switch away quickly and hurt it with the algorithm.
Here's what it came up with:
Introduction to Second Thought: The channel is 100% viewer-funded, encouraging support through Patreon.
2024 Election and Biden's Approval Rating: Biden's approval rating is very low, and his failure to fulfill several key promises like the $15 minimum wage, federal right to abortion, and significant student debt cancellation is highlighted.
Broken Promises and Blame on Republicans: Despite having a Democratic majority for two years, Biden blames Republican obstruction for his unfulfilled promises.
Democratic Control and Disappointments: Even with control of the presidency, Senate, and House in 2021, Democrats failed to deliver on progressive promises, leading to disappointment among voters.
Bullshit. The student debt cancellation in particular is transparently false to blame on Biden since he tried to do much more than the rest of the system (the Supreme Court in particular) allowed him to do.
I listed some key accomplishments above. I actually am fairly content with how accurately I guessed what kind of transparent bullshit and Biden-blaming and failing to recognize important stuff he actually did accomplish, was in this video.
Now it gets interesting:
Obstructionist Democrats: The video mentions the recurring issue of Democratic senators like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema obstructing progressive legislation, drawing parallels with past figures like Joe Lieberman.
Lobbying Influence: Lobbying and corporate donations are identified as major influences on conservative Democrats, who often block progressive policies due to financial incentives.
Revolving Door and Career Incentives: The potential for lucrative lobbying jobs post-politics motivates some Democrats to obstruct progressive legislation to stay in the good graces of corporate donors.
If this was the core of the video, it'd be grand. "How do we get rid of the Manchins of the world" sounds great. "How do we blame Biden for anything and make sure we don't vote for Democrats" is guaranteed to make things worse. Like I say, I'm actually fairly happy with how well I was able to determine what was in the video just from the thumbnail, title, and what channel it's from.
No Labels Organization: Founded in 2010, No Labels aims to bring together centrists and moderates, often funded by Republican donors, to undermine progressive candidates.
Democratic Leadership's Role: Democratic leadership actively supports centrist candidates who obstruct progressive policies, revealing a strategy to maintain corporate support while appearing progressive.
Managed Democracy Concept: The thesis borrows from Sheldon Wolin's "Democracy Inc.", arguing that gridlock and obstruction are intentional to prevent majority rule and maintain corporate influence.
Yeah. More good stuff. It's a big problem. Let me guess - the solution is not to vote for Biden Harris.
Systemic Gridlock: The design of the American political system, with its gridlocked Congress, ensures that corporate interests are prioritized over majority rule.
Democrats' Dual Strategy: To remain in power, Democrats need to appear progressive while catering to corporate interests, resulting in a strategy of controlled obstruction by a few key figures.
Electoral Politics and Voter Demobilization: Elections focus on mobilizing voters with progressive rhetoric, but post-election, corporate interests take precedence, leading to voter disillusionment.
Yeah. All of this stuff is pretty bad.
Honestly? If this video was being made in 1995 or 2004, it'd be great. Since then we've moved on to an actually progressive Democrat in the White House, against all fuckin odds, and the Republicans have moved on to actually wanting to shoot all the Democrats, let alone what they want to do to the socialists.
Long-term Implications: The video concludes that radical change in the US will not come from the Democratic Party but from organized mass movements, as the party is too entrenched in corporate interests.
Accurate yes
Support and Community Engagement: The video ends by promoting its Patreon and Discord community, emphasizing the importance of viewer support for independent, principled socialist content
Why do you assume it’s safer? There’s like thousands of Chipotle’s and every couple years there’s a few reports from a few of them making people sick. A one off shop with the same odds would have a very slim chance of having an issue, even after being open for over a decade.
I can and have, and it’s still a tremendous pain in the ass to launder the addresses for labels. The hottest loop in the game draws an arbitrary span of the same tile. It should be trivial to do a jump table - to grab an address from an array and go there. 13 tiles? goto jump[13]. (Or really some stack / return shenanigans, because the 6502 is odd.) But if there’s any way to get cc65 to shove the location of an instruction into an array, I haven’t found it.
Being opposed to genocide supporters is not a “talking point” it’s not a “trick”. Genocide is simply against the very core of my belief about how we’re meant to treat other human beings.
So when a Democrat supports genocide, I want them out of the party and I see those who choose to ignore that candidates genocidal views as complicit themselves as well since they are responsible for putting that person into as position of power despite knowing the ugly truth. Hopefully that’s clear enough for you to allow yourself to understand. It’s very odd to have to spell it out like this for you though.
Harris is not a zionist afaik.
Harris does not appear to be ideological like Biden, that is true and a promising sign, but that’s not really related to the point I’m making – while zionists like Biden and his supporters do obviously help keep the slaughter going, one doesn’t necessarily have to be a committed zionist to help fuel the genocide. One could choose to do it for any number of reasons (ex. cowardice, political convenience etc.), we will see if Harris’ actions match up with her rhetoric. She doesn’t get an automatic pass on being a moral human being, this isn’t a cult of personality like the GOP.
Granted. I’m one of the lucky such gen X’ers whose parents were prescient and wealthy enough in the early 80s to get me a computer (Apple ][). As such, I’m mystified dealing with people much younger than me who are oddly proud of being technically illiterate… though to be fair it’s been a lot of users that I supported during my days as an IT drone, and many of those were real estate bros. Ugh.
Ah, so then you’re using transphobic to mean any discrimination against a trans person, no matter how reasonable? Fair enough. I had taken it to mean discrimination primarily on the basis of being trans, rather than a basis of incompatability or circumstance despite intent; but even if the intent is good, if it causes harm it should be called out eh?
Also, good point about being attracted to some traits of a person instead of the whole. It would be very tiring and extremely odd to never be attracted to anyone unless you knew very intimate details of their life.
