So most of the new growth was taken up by mastodon.social ... right?

See
https://fedidb.org/software/mastodon ... which doesn't provide recent numbers by time, but does if you go into individual instances, such as mastodon.world, where you can see user growth mainly occurred on mastodon.social.

I imagine some users have also returned, bumping MAU but perhaps a little more distributed.

Along with lemmy.world, it looks like "centralisation" is relatively natural.

@fediverse @fediversenews

app_priori ,

Centralization reduces friction. Normies who sign up on Mastodon are going to want to be able to talk to all of the other Twitter refugees too. By making mastodon.social the default, it encourages centralization of the mainstream portion of Mastodon’s userbase, such as journalists, official company accounts, public figures, etc.

But most of them are probably going to use BlueSky. I heard journalists have been mostly gravitating towards that option.

While I certainly like having the choice of so many servers, and I think it’s smart to spread the load, I also understand why people would want to make sure they are in a stable server that has a reasonable chance to stay around. You have to put a certain amount of faith in the instance owner.

So I got a warning that nginx proxy manager hadn't been renewing my certificates for a while tonight.

Tried to renew them manually.

It broke, everywhere, badly. Ended up reinstalling from scratch, even on a different machine, but it Would Not Work. Kept throwing internal NPM errors.

Is it currently broken? I've resorted to a manual nginx config for now. but it's not ideal. Anyone else seeing flakiness from nginx proxy manager?

TagMeInSkipIGotThis ,

Heh, mine’s not so different, multiple subnets - plus Wireguard :)

I don’t exactly know why but in the end it was definitely a inter-vlan connectivity problem I kept hitting. The pain was trying to prove it out as the official Nginx Proxy Manager container for unraid didn’t include anything like ping / traceroute etc.

teclo ,
@teclo@feddit.uk avatar

I had an issue like this, I actually shelled into the docker container and found that the process to upgrade was running but had stalled. So I killed it and then made a new request and it worked.

Is Jerboa for Lemmy crashing for anyone else?

I've been using Jerboa for Lemmy for my Beehaw account since the Migration. At first it worked fine. Then I started getting an error message about the version of Lemmy being used on the instance. But for the last couple of days it has been crashing immediately on opening:

Jerboa Error Message

Is anyone else having this problem? Can anyone recommend an alternative app?

Thanks!

leds ,

Yes thanks that worked!

grumbul ,

Jerboa started crashing for me around the time they did an update that required a newer lemmy version. I've been using Liftoff and that's working pretty well so far. I'm trying to stay open to different apps because they're all pretty new and none that I've tried have been exactly what I'm looking for yet.

Next on this old starship, we building a forum.

Also, where did the name friends of DeSoto come from? I’ve listened for years and feel like a missed a random reference.

Soupbreaker ,

It’s from the early days of Greatest Gen, and references Captain DeSoto of the USS Hood (NCC-1703). DeSoto and the Hood made several appearances in TNG, and Ben and Adam leaned into his chill vibes, theorizing that the Hood would be a great place to work.

It’s also an allusion to the phrase Friend of Dorothy, an older euphemism for LGBT people.

I think it was originally jokingly conceived as a sort of passphrase or shibboleth for fans of the pod to identify each other without revealing their embarrassing enthusiasm to outsiders, e.g.

Q: “Are you a friend of DeSoto?”

A: “Best boss I ever had!”

I have an router. Let’s say I install Tailscale on it and want to create an interface that specifically routes to one of my exit nodes. Can I do that?

Everything I’ve seen about Tailscale on OpenWRT just provides direct router access to the tailnet (100.x.x.x), but I specifically want to route certain traffic to an exit node.

Can I do this? Do me proud, Fediverse! Hoping I can get good answers here without resorting to Reddit.

tvcvt ,

I’ve done something similar, though not with openwrt. There may be a decent way to do this on the firewall, but I ended up using the ACLs available from the Tailscale console.

I removed the default allow all rule. I made a group called admins that can access everything and then added a set of routes that everyone on the tail net could access.

I’ve only recently set this up, but initial testing seems to have this working as hoped.

LunchEnjoyer ,
@LunchEnjoyer@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not sure this hits the nail for you or not, but I recently solved a question I had regarding tailscale and routing traffic through an exitnode that was using a VPN. Could be worth a peek.

Solution was Docker and Gluetun ✨

If it’s going in something (e.g. dahl) I use the frozen stuff. If it’s to munch on raw or as leaves then I abandoned fresh spinach ages ago - Kale is much more robust and (IMO) tastes better.

This is really what Strange New Worlds is most about: giving us precious knowledge about what our heros in the original Star Trek were all doing before we met them on the Enterprise in the TV sets in our living rooms in the 1960s

I respectfully disagree. I don’t think the most important parts of this show are the things it depicts legacy characters doing, though your review mentions little else.

Given your clear fondness for TOS, I’d be interested in reading you compare the two more!

PaulLev OP ,
@PaulLev@mastodon.social avatar

@ikesau Thanks for the comment. To read what I think of non-legacy characters in Strange New Worlds, try some of my reviews of other episodes of the series (for example, the time-travel episode in which Singh and Kirk are the main characters, and I discuss Singh as much as Kirk).

Does it not give you a link field? It shows up for me as a text link in the body of the post.

And at least on my client (Connect), trying to tag a community in the title doesn’t work, it just shows the link markup raw.

Also your hashtags are links back to mastodon. I don’t think those are useful for Lemmy users.
