Traditional porcelain and ceramic toilet bowls could be on the way out. A new 3D-printed bowl developed by scientists at Huazhong University in China is so slippery that nothing sticks to it. Science Alert has more:

Sept 17: How do you promote your writing?

Instead of answering, I went through all the responses thus far and made a spreadsheet of the answers. (This is absolutely non-scientific and possibly inaccurate, plus there's no data as to how well these strategies worked, but hey, I was curious and thought maybe others might be interested too.)

I also have a list of "Other" answers that didn't fit neatly in these boxes or struck me in some way-- I'll link those next.

skaeth OP ,

@ElisesWritings @RubyJones I haven’t heard of reading and reviewing as a marketing strategy, though I do a ton of reading and reviewing when I can, mostly to spread the word about amazing books, as well as to fill the creative well, study craft through incredible storytelling, and to find similar books to target for ads, etc (If you like X and Y try Z— and if you like X or Y but haven’t tried the other, do that too!)

ElisesWritings ,
@ElisesWritings@wandering.shop avatar

@skaeth @RubyJones it struck me because I wonder if the odds of hitting your target audience with in-genre reviews on review sights are better than posting to anyone and everyone you do (or don't) interact with on social media. I'm guessing its impact is hard to track though.

I should do more of the latter, but with an epic, portal, YA Fantasy with incidentally queer characters, limited romance & initially low magic... non high-risk-of-misleading ones are pricks to find 😆

Good Morning Mastodon and Fantasycon! Hope you’re all ok? Today I’m currently reading the engrossing SF tale on Hamlet that is The Death I Gave Him by Em X Liu. What are you reading at the moment?

@RunalongWomble Hello, Womble. Just finished 'The Dentist' by Tim Sullivan, a UK crime procedural set in Bristol. Main detective character is on the autistic spectrum, which makes him very good at details and patterns but not so good at interacting with colleagues and the public. Compelling mystery, well-paced but not sure how I felt about the writing style. There was a lot of jarring head-hopping (jumping between POV and POV), often within the same paragraph.

Hello Womble, just started 'The blighted stars' by Megan O'Keefe. Fun space opera so far. Sabotaged ship leads a group of survivors to crash land on an Earth-like planet which is not as hospitable as they were led to expect...

Dear Fediverse:

I'm wanting to reach out to fans who have personal challenges that make some - or many - games difficult to access for them.

Visual acuity issues. Hearing loss. Dyslexia, or missing limbs or anything else.

I'm planning an article on accessibility features in video games, and would love to hear stories from people for whom those features aren't merely a convenience, but necessary for them to be able to participate in the hobby.

I'd appreciate help reaching out on this.

markwyner ,
@markwyner@mas.to avatar

@GuerillaGrue I’m a designer and accessibility expert. I’ve been working in this field for over two decades, but unfortunately never had an opportunity to work on games. But I really want to. I can’t wait to read your piece.

Drusas ,

I'm not sure what to offer because my disability has made it so that I have had to give up most games.

I have a few issues, but the main problem when it comes to gaming is dystonia. I get cramps in my hand, wrist, arm, and shoulder from repetitive or rapid mouse clicking or button pressing, from having to heavily use a thumb stick, and similar motions. It's made worst by the fact that controllers keep getting bigger while my hands stay tiny. This has made it so that I can only play a very limited selection of games. I haven't found any solutions.

Apparently it's been out since June and I just never realized, but there's a new pfsense out.

https://www.netgate.com/blog/pfsense-2.7.0-and-23.05

Not exactly timely, but I bet I'm not the only one who easily forgets about that particular thing. Most of my stuff is set to autoupdate so I tend to forget.

The upgrade downloaded a large number of packages, I think about 160, during which network connectivity continued to function. After downloading, my router PC reset, and that first boot after the upgrade took quite a few minutes. I ended up running the 90 second timer out after which it reset to 20 seconds a number of times. I was just about to start digging for an HDMI cable to see what when I heard the router beep and my internet came back. Perfect upgrade, didn't need to fix anything afterwards.

theRealBassist ,

I get the gist of what Opnsense is from the name, but what are some of the practical benefits for a small home labber to use it over PFsense?

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

The UI is way, way better. I also haven’t had opnsense corrupt itself, but PFsense did that to me twice in the five or so years I used it.

Other than that there aren’t a lot of functional differences. There was some drama years ago with the guy who runs PFsense and I guess he’s kind of a giant asshole, that’s what led to the fork, but I don’t remember the details.

A few days after arriving, we took a trip to Khan Market. Khan Market in Central Delhi is a tiny area of boutique shops, restaurants, and bars. It is one of a handful of places that you'll see a lot of expats in Delhi. It is considered India's most expensive retail market (in terms of real estate cost). We sometimes feel a little silly but we have many, many fond memories of Khan and we had to go. A few highlights from the visit:

We had a strong Irani chai, a Bombay Sandwich (in @seanbala's opinion, one of the greatest culinary gifts to mankind) and a raspberry soda.

An Irani Chai is like a normal Indian chai but made much stronger.

The Bombay Sandwich is a thick grilled vegetable sandwich with very thinly sliced beets, potatoes, cucumbers, and tomatoes, all sprinkled with a big helping of cheese. Difficult to make, impossible not to eat!

Ruchika also having an Irani chai. You can see more of the unique decoration of the restaurant.
A very cool looking raspberry soda with a sprig of mint and a paper straw with a purple stripe.
A very beautiful Bombay sandwich on a metal plate topped with fries.
