So both lemmy and lotide were having big problems where they'd get totally overwhelmed, especially once I started federating with huge instances. At first I thought it was because my servers aren't very powerful, but eventually I got the idea that maybe it's because it can't keep up with federation data from the big instances.
So I decided to limit the connections per IP address. Long-term testing isn't done yet, but so far both my lemmy and lotide instances aren't getting crushed when they're exposed to the outside world, so I think it's helping.
In /etc/nginx/nginx.conf, under the http section, I added the line "limit_conn_zone $binary_remote_addr zone=conn_limit_per_ip:10m;"
Then, in my sites-available folder for the services, I added "limit_conn conn_limit_per_ip 4;" or something similar. Both lemmy and lotide have different sections for ActivityPub and API, so it appears I can limit the connections just to those parts of the site.
It's only been a few days, but whereas before both instances would die randomly pretty quickly once exposed to the outside world, now it appears that they're both stable. Meanwhile, I'm still getting federated posts and comments.

The relationship between reward value and cognitive performance is often thought to be curvilinear, shaped like an inverted U. Moderately valuable rewards should facilitate, but extremely valuable rewards should harm, performance. Despite the popularity of this idea, the dose–response relationship between reward value and cognitive performance is not yet well understood. Here, we present a set of experiments (total N = 254) that examine the effects of monetary reward (no reward, medium reward, extreme reward) on task-switching performance. Overall, more valuable rewards led to better performance. Yet, when physical reward cues were present (i.e., when the money at stake was placed on the table), we observed the predicted inverted U-shaped relationship. Together, our results suggest that (a) people are often able to maintain good cognitive performance when the stakes are high and that (b) physical reward cues may play a key role in triggering “choking under pressure.” (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)

It's #InternationalBatNight this weekend! The #BatNight has taken place every year since 1997 in more than 30 countries in Africa and Europe on the last full weekend of August. 🦇 #Bats rarely feature in #GreekMythology but they appear in #Aesop's fables as a creature of dual nature, neither bird nor mouse. As an animal blurring the lines, it fits well with #Dionysos, a god who blurs the lines not between mouse and bird but between male and female.
The story of #Dionysos and the Minyades appears in Plutarch's Greek Questions 38 and in the Metamorphoses of both Ovid and Antoninus Liberalis. The daughters of Minyas, Leukippe, Arsippe and Alkathoe were startlingly diligent. They strongly criticised other women for abandoning the city to roam the hills as Bacchantes. Dionysos took on the likeness of a girl and urged the Minyades not to miss out on the rites and mysteries of the god. But they paid him no heed.
#Dionysos was angered and turned into a bull, then a lion, then a leopard. From the beams of their looms there flowed for him milk and nectar. Gripped by terror, the maidens threw lots determining that Leukippe had to offer her son as a sacrifice to the god. They tore him to pieces and went into the mountains as Bacchantes until #Hermes (or Dionysos himself) changed them into #bats.
Feast your eyes on this amusing metroidvania of the NSFW variety. Scarlet Maiden is still in early access, but already has overwhelmingly positive reviews.
Bought that today. Since I owned already another of their titles I got a 21% discount. All bough two more of their games. I hope to have a good time as with their previous titles.

When it comes to software and apps, it's important to find the one that best suits your needs. The best software and apps can help improve productivity, streamline processes, and simplify complex tasks. But with so many options to choose from, how do you know which is right for you?
At one end of the spectrum, you have big-name software like Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop. These are robust tools that offer a full suite of features and require advanced knowledge or training to use them to their fullest potential.
On the other end, you have more specialized tools that are designed to simplify a specific task or process. These typically don't require advanced expertise and are generally easy to use. In the middle, there's a mix of both. Some tools are best for simple tasks, while others might be better for more complex tasks.
When it comes to choosing the best software and apps, it's important to look for features that will simplify your workflow instead of complicating it. Look for tools that are easy to use and understand, and that can integrate with other tools you're already using. Pay attention to customer reviews as well. These can give you valuable insight into how the software or app performs in real world scenarios.
My job is fairly low-risk but I'm now housemates w someone who's pretty likely exposed to covid and other contagious diseases at work. (and doesn't seem concerned about it.) I guess I should get a booster to somewhat decrease my chances of transmitting things to other people around me this 'season.' I wonder about getting one ASAP vs waiting until 'updated' ones become available in ~ a month.
I am waiting on an iota-carageenan spray in the mail currently. Some of these are big allergy triggers for some people, and some are very toxic to pets (xylitol) so that's something to be aware of. People report different things about nitric oxide (enovid) spray being seized or not by U.S. customs.
it's designed for allergies, the xylitol is supposed to stop allergens from adhering to nasal walls, and in my experience it helped for that
and i feel like given that mechanism it might do for viruses what it does for allergens, and reduce the risk of infection, i know a study is being done on it for prevention but i don't know if the results are out yet, there was a study done on using it for treatment of people with COVID that showed a reduction in symptoms i think
The thing I never appreciated about an apocalypse is that multiple catastrophes could be happening all around, and I'd still be going to work and buying school supplies, filing taxes and grocery shopping.
That unprecedented times could feel surreal and ordinary all at once.
That the world would keep on relentlessly turning even as it was burning.
@jjfphd I think it will be more like a drawn out decline than an apocalypse. It will probably take 100 years or more until the Industrial Age is finally over and the old civilisations are gone. Until then, things will get worse and worse, sometimes in a great catastrophe that kills many people and destroys many things, but most of the time, it will be rather quiet and boring, just entropy doing its thing and humans being unable to repair their cities and infrastructure quite as fast would be necessary.
On May 29, 1787, The “Virginia Plan” written by #JamesMadison was proposed by VA #Governor Edmond Randolph, and included the proposal “... that the members of the first branch of the National Legislature ought to be elected by the people of the several States [and] to be of the age of _____ years at least …”.
Madison’s proposal literally had a ‘blank’ for how old a member of the #HouseofRepresentatives should be.
What was the decision of the Convention?
A. 25 years
B. 30 years
C. 35 years
