How to respond to a reviewer who thinks using 'we' consistently throughout a manuscript (in methods and a little in discussion 'we found' etc) sounds unscientific? @academicchatter

I agree. Personalisation and vernacular phrasing has no place in most papers.

The subjects were chosen according to health status....
Immunohistology analysis was ...

If it contains we did this, we did that, we chose this, we dunked it in that it sounds like a holiday diary.

TBH it is also unnecessary padding. Cut to the chase and stick to the essence.

This is what I was trained to do preparing reports for presenting in court.

@rra and I have a new, article out: "Shifting your research from X to Mastodon? Here's what you need to know"

https://www.cell.com/action/showPdf?pii=S2666-3899%2823%2900323-9

This article is an opinion piece in which we argue that social scientists cannot simply port their work from X to or the rest of the . There are key differences in culture, expectations of privacy, and of course topology to consider.

Presumably this is it in webpage format....

Very thorough and insightful. A lot of could do with reading this.

The lack of privacy is not an issue because almost no information is retained. No phone number, date of birth, address etc which you do mention.

Worth noting that researchers might find communities that they are unlikely to come across elsewhere. Gaining trust with them might be a challenge.

I'm working my way through the revised Biggs, Tang and Kennedy and while I am a big fan of , the "Susan and Robert" problem makes me want to poke sharp objects at the pages. Why is Robert phrased as a "Problem"??? Why should the highest aim be that "Robert learns more in the manner of Susan"? Why not aim to connect to Robert ON HIS OWN TERMS? 1/7

We had a lecturer who left a few years ago to spend more time with his farm.

He had a special ability to connect with the rugby lads and lasses, others who were just along for the ride and those who were struggling with too many other life issues.

He did not embrace any formulaic teaching or pastoral skills. He could 'appear' very un-PC and was frequently frowned on. The students all loved him and he always got the best feedback rates in the faculty.

@renordquist @academicchatter

As far as I can tell he was open and honest with the students, sometimes telling them things they didn't want to hear.
He would also give them as much time to talk as they wanted.

One of his students later became a postgrad and he was adamant that he would never have got through college without his help.

On Friday, a university committee I sit on had to vote in a new chair. And of course we voted in the member who was on an intercontinental flight home for the holidays.

First rule of committee club, never miss a meeting otherwise you will find you are nominated/volunteered for something.

What motivates research fraud?

"There is pressure to publish as scientists [...] There are labs that are run by big egos who might say to a young researcher, “Why did your experiment fail? I will hire someone else who will make it work [...] The graduate students and the postdocs might be the ones photoshopping, but who is responsible for the atmosphere and the integrity of the lab? That’s the professor" - @ElisabethBik

I have worked in science for about 45 years and in a research environment for 37 years.

I don't recognise any of those scenarios. Have worked with a few massive egos, however they would never have faked anything and never have pressured anyone else to. This was in Forensic Science and a University.

Am aware of pressure in some medical science environments to get publications out and am aware that there has been some fraudulent publication there.

@BBCRD
Hi
Could you suggest to the person who programmes the bot that posts news, @BBCNewsUK, to remove the Twitter link.

Many, myself included, do not have access to Twitter.

Is there anything on the Twitter post that is any different to what is on the Mastodon post?

@BBCRD fair enough
