Adolf Hitler got a lot of his racist ideas from America, so it was the old USA that was the inspiration for actual Nazism...

@microblogc @DamienMarieAtHope hence Conquistadors killed for greed and power. A Calvinist can kill for pleasure without guilt or remorse. They are the perfect capitalists, and explains much about modern Capitalism emerging out of Calvinism, too...

@gnutelephony @microblogc @DamienMarieAtHope That’s not how Calvinism worked in the Americas. Not disputing the genocide, but the specific doctrinal mechanisms. A few months ago I saw that @neilhimself (and some friends of mine) was coming to . I got tickets fully intending to read books by authors attending. Then I bought a new apartment and moved. Constant work for three months now. Today I went to get my armband and felt guilty that I have read nothing.

BTW. Every time I am around tourists in Iceland I have the urge to tell them about my podcast. I could just wear a shirts all the time but that feels a bit vain.

Dagwood222 ,

I’m pretty well-versed in Star Trek lore, but it’s always nice to get another perspective. After reading the article I had a brain storm. Lucile Ball was [amazingly enough] a big wheel at Desilu and pushed for the second pilot. She must have liked the first one because it dared to have a smart woman in a position of power. I’m sure many other people have had that notion, and I think it’s funny that it took me so long to see the obvious.

@AlisonW @actuallyautistic Yeah. I've probably searched for hundreds (definitely at least dozens) over the years. I've found maybe a hand full at most, but for some reason that small number makes me feel successful in the attempt. Weird.

show and tell for a lesser known Ptolemaic god, Harpokrates, a Hellenic interpretation of the Egyptian god of the newborn sun, Horus, as a child. Usually depicted with finger pressed to his lips and often with roses, he also later became associated with secrets and silence, leading to the concept of 'sub rosa'. Here shown on the reverse of a rare bronze obol struck in 137 to 138 CE under Hadrian, in Alexandria, Egypt, wearing a pharaonic hemhem crown

@taoish @medievodon @histodons I'm afraid it would be a one-sided process as I have no notes to share. I am aware of it, but that's all. I'd be very interested in reading more tho'. After I cracked that joke about Harpo, I found out that apparently there was a running joke that he was named after Harpocrates, as the mute member of the trio. It wasn't actually true, apparently. He was named for the harp he played

@schizanon @gaming That’s part of why I’m always surprised at how much people will rail on bugs in games now. I mean sure if a bug makes a game literally impossible to complete, rail away. But half the stuff people complain about are things that when I was a kid would have been treated as hilarious quirks and possibly things vital to the ability to speed run the games.

@neilhimself god it's all so incredibly tender (both good and bad) to read and watch. We are truly in a special place with TV right now that we get access to this and some of the other truly beautiful stories which artists are rendering. I swear every week—I'm a psychotherapist—one of my clients references something to illustrate the pain in their own lives. Happened to me today with Sex Education (client referenced Maeve's mum's funeral), it's happened with Good Omens, WandaVision and others.

Apparently it's been out since June and I just never realized, but there's a new pfsense out.

https://www.netgate.com/blog/pfsense-2.7.0-and-23.05

Not exactly timely, but I bet I'm not the only one who easily forgets about that particular thing. Most of my stuff is set to autoupdate so I tend to forget.

The upgrade downloaded a large number of packages, I think about 160, during which network connectivity continued to function. After downloading, my router PC reset, and that first boot after the upgrade took quite a few minutes. I ended up running the 90 second timer out after which it reset to 20 seconds a number of times. I was just about to start digging for an HDMI cable to see what when I heard the router beep and my internet came back. Perfect upgrade, didn't need to fix anything afterwards.

theRealBassist ,

I get the gist of what Opnsense is from the name, but what are some of the practical benefits for a small home labber to use it over PFsense?

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

The UI is way, way better. I also haven’t had opnsense corrupt itself, but PFsense did that to me twice in the five or so years I used it.

Other than that there aren’t a lot of functional differences. There was some drama years ago with the guy who runs PFsense and I guess he’s kind of a giant asshole, that’s what led to the fork, but I don’t remember the details.

Today for I'm voting ammineite because guano mineral 😆 I got no folklore for it, even though I vaguely remember reading a bat guano folktale at some point... couldn't locate it. Maybe for the next round.

christinkallama ,
@christinkallama@mastodon.social avatar

While three men (George S. Key, Henry Jones, and Edward Smith) were initially sentenced to death for murder, their supporters launched a legal challenge to the Guano Act and the jurisdiction of U.S. courts, argued as Jones vs. U.S. before the U.S. Supreme Court and, when that failed, successfully lobbied President Benjamin Harrison to commute the sentences. By that point, the case had achieved such notoriety that he devoted part of his 1891 State of the Union address to defending his decision.

christinkallama ,
@christinkallama@mastodon.social avatar

This support came principally from the Black Baltimore community - especially the Grand United Order of Galilean Fishermen and the Mutual United Brotherhood of Liberty.

While successful in saving the men's lives, the commutation of their death sentences to life in prison meant that Key, Jones, and Smith would spend the rest of their lives in hard labor in brutal conditions without labor protections. Just as they had on Navassa.

Snapper offers basically the same functionality as Timeshift and is -to my knowledge- developed by openSUSE’s team. So, while finding it therefore pre-configured on say openSUSE Tumbleweed makes sense, it’s also the preferred solution on some other distros like Garuda Linux, Siduction and Spiral Linux.

And as @zenartcenter has noted, there are female Bodhisattvas within the tradition.

This is not to say that there are not problems. But I've always thought religious communities are so diverse. Consider - you can have hardcore Christian nationalists in the US and you can have radical peace churches like the Quakers, Mennonites, and Amish within the same tradition.

@TheDailyBurble @BuddhismNow @ReadingFaithfully_org @obu @zenartcenter @dharma @dhamma @buddhism

The key is to not see religious traditions as monolithic and to understand that there are many traditions operating simultaneously within the larger umbrella and which can become more important in certain places, times, societies, and contexts.
