I'm looking for Edinburgh Fringe shows about hidden or forgotten history! I feel like I saw lots of shows like this advertised last year, and I didn’t actually see any of them. Please recommend these to me 🥰💛

@riewarden
I've got two hidden Edinburgh shows for you-

"Ancient Coins from Forgotten Kingdoms" Burrito N Shake, 13:15

Also my palindrome Improv show has chunks of lurid Palindrome history in between guest comedians, while we work on our palindromes.

Palindrome Fight! Brewdog West (50 Lothian) at 16:55

Both shows are all month, 5-27 Aug except Tuesdays. PBH Free Fringe so just show up, I'll pass a hat in case you are moved to contribute. @histodons

One more twitter transfer. I was intrigued by Husserl’s rather effusive praise of Buddhist thought in his review of the Pali Canon, "On the Teachings of Gotama Buddha," and wanted to know more about the backstory. Karl Schuhmann's chapter "Husserl and Indian Thought" in Phenomenology and Indian Philosophy has some details about this. According to Schuhmann, Karl Eugen Neumann's German translation of Sutta Pitaka was initially published around the turn of 20th cent. 1/

The publisher was doing a reprint and might have asked Husserl for a review of the reprint for publicity purpose. This led to the publication of Husserl’s review in an advertisement journal of the publisher in the spring of 1925. Interestingly, in January 1926 Husserl wrote a manuscript, “Socrates-Buddha,” to study two forms of rationality, Greek and Indian. Rather disappointingly, but perhaps unsurprisingly for someone at the time 2/

TaoJiang OP ,
@TaoJiang@zirk.us avatar

Husserl found Buddhist thought (or Indian thought more generally) inferior to European philosophy because of the former’s supposed inability to produce “a universal science of being.” It is interesting that when philosophers have certain telos in their minds they would marshal all their conceptual prowess (or perform strenuous philosophical gymnastics) to make their particular philosophy the end of all philosophies. 3/

One of several secondary reasons why making a Fediverse reference on Place is so hard to maintain is that the Fediverse is built for far less uniformity and tribe mindset.

Edit, I did say one of several secondary reasons. I have no illusion that I've spotted the #1 main reason.

Usernameblankface OP ,

@guy_threepwood
Agreed. The tribe mindset on display shows me how users who love reddit as it is are not a good fit for the Fediverse. Maybe less advertising to that crowd is a good thing.

@Nicolaz I didn't see an post so hi! Really glad to see you here! If you need any tips on using the fedi, I'd be happy to help or point you to links that can get you started easier.

@weirdwriter Thank you! I do need help. Maybe too three basic tips that would be helpful to someone coming from Twitter and Bluesky?

weirdwriter OP ,

@Nicolaz Hmm. Best 2/3 tips, follow hashtags and groups, not people. use directories like the Trunk, and finally, it's okay to lerk and not reply despite what others tell you! My full guide is here with some apps/user directories, etc. Link at end.

The hashtags I'd recommend are below. My guide has directories to follow.

More stuff is below but My guide can be found at https://blindjournalist.wordpress.com/2022/05/01/mastodon-for-writers-and-readers/

hashtags I like.

hashtags are the best way to find new people in addition to the directories I outline in my guide, etc. Below, you can see some communities/groups I like and follow.

Groups I like/follow.

@selfhosted I self-host a few services on my box, but I'm looking for a 'dashboard' like solution to use as a portal to click to each of those. I've seen this before, but can't for the life of me remember what it's called... suggestions? :debian: :linux:

magnus ,

I liked the look of Dashy, but it felt somewhat too heavy software for the simple dashboard I needed, and so I wrote the first version of Dashie.

It only uses Javascript and doesn’t need any server components except a webserver. Configuration is done by editing YAML files.

Themes are implemented, and multiple pages which can be used to make more complex navigation of multiple dashboards.

Check it out :)

xyguy ,

I use Heimdall. You can set it up in no time with docker compose and manage it all through the web interface after that.

Its simple but also has some neat integrations with certain apps and will give live stats for certain things. Like pihole gives you live stats on what’s being blocked for instance.

I would like to help an open-source project with UI design and UX design. I have over 18 years of experience in the field and have worked with desktop and mobile software on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and Windows Mobile/Windows Phone. Unfortunately my knowledge of Linux is very limited but I'm eager to learn. Could you help me find a project? @thelinuxEXP @linux @macrumors @windowscentral @windows

Another day, another -- this time, @ColleenDoran's long-awaited adaptation of @neilhimself and Terry Pratchett's Good Omens: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dunmanifestin/good-omens

Colleen's previous adaptations of Neil's work have been works of art, and won a lot of well-deserved awards, so I'm really looking forward to this one.

(NB: this adapts the book, not the TV show; related, but not identical.)

There's an early-bird tier available only today, so I recommend giving it a look now…

I don't generally like KickStarter, because sometimes the people don't ever follow up again after they get the $$. But I'm trusting the Pratchett Estate and @neilhimself and @ColleenDoran on this one. It just started today 8/1 It's almost 2pm EDT and it's already reached it's £25K goal! Congratulations y'all!!

Canada Post has already done it for all the TOS crew, and the 90s captains, the ships.

Even the Borg had their own Canadian stamp.

Troi was on a recent stamp for the UK Royal Mail.

Halo: Master Chief Collection is an absolute broken mess

Last weekend, I picked up the Master Chief Collection from the Steam sale with a friend. We wanted to play through Halo 1 again, but it was completely unplayable.

You can't always join another player's session.
Occasionally, nothing happens when starting a mission.
On certain missions the game just completely freezes.
At certain points the game locks up leaving you unable to move.

It's just awful.

@gaming @gaming @gaming

realcaseyrollins ,

I've had a generally pleasant experience with the game. All the issues I came across--friends not being able to join matches, lag while on multiplayer--was because of cross-platform issues, one of us was on the MCC version while another was in the original release version, or my own poor internet connection.

Streamer ,

I had some issues in coop, but we managed to finish all the games.
