@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

What my Dad always called “the elastic curriculum” - some politician gets a bug up their ass and demand schools teach it (eg BoJo and Latin). At least this weaves through different subjects so could be made to work. Still, it must be a bit difficult to teach critical thinking in religious schools.

A bit difficult to teach critical thinking in religious schools

Religion requires you to not have critical thinking skills at all

I went to a Catholic school - they did their level best not to avoid anything resembling it (and sex education).

breadsmasher ,
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

Just so I understand, the catholic school you attended did teach critical thinking and sex education?

turtlepower ,

Mine did, too. Hell, I had a 4th grade teacher that taught the class how to meditate during the last 5-10 minutes of class. She would turn off the lights, have us put our heads down on our desk and would put on a CD with new age bell/chime/gong meditation music, and she would talk us through guided meditations; simple visualization and relaxation. She also taught us to stand up and speak out when we saw someone doing something bad: “You are doing the wrong thing!”

apotheotic , in Thousands of counter-protesters take to UK streets as far-right unrest fails to materialise

I can only hope that the right wing protesters that were blocking a main road will face the same heavy punishment that was doled out to Just Stop Oil for the same thing. If they’re gonna jail climate protesters for it, they better damn well jail the fashs for it.

HumanPenguin ,
@HumanPenguin@feddit.uk avatar

Worth considering. The law states that blocking traffic must be willful. So fairly easy to argue just atop oils whole purpose was to stop oil using cars.

I did not see these protests. So the question is were the (terrorist in the case of the fash) protestors of either side attempting to block traffic or doing so as a result of gathering.

apotheotic ,

From BBC’s live coverage:

A group of anti-immigration protesters blocked a major road in Portsmouth.

Up to 200 protesters, some holding union flags and chanting “save our kids”, repeatedly blocked Mile End Road, just outside the city’s ferry port.

It is one of the main roads in and out of the city.

Police keep clearing them from the road but they keep running back in, blocking the carriageway in both directions.

They gathered first outside Norman House near the ferry port, a building that is used by the immigration service.

The protesters have now moved towards Portsmouth city centre.

Seems like its pretty intentional

www.bbc.com/news/live/cy8497l7dx8t?page=3

HumanPenguin ,
@HumanPenguin@feddit.uk avatar

Hate to give excuses for these people.

But nothing in these quotes would lead to legal proof that blocking traffic was the intent. It just leads to a group of 200 people trying to be noticed and avoiding police kettleing them.

The 5 Just Stop Oil protesters were shown to have discussed limiting the travel of vehicles. Heck, as dumb as it sounds. The fact they allowed ambulances through, shows blocking other traffic, was an intentional part of the plan.

Please remember, this is ion no way supposed to indicate I support the actions of these terrorists. Or oppose the actions of just stop oil. It is just a consideration o the actual legal justification in both cases.

Some other evidence of the intent of the protests to limit the movement of traffic is needed in this case.

Of course, with police filming and the number of phone vids made. Plus all the social media discussions leading up to the protests. That evidence may well become clear later on. But running onto the road to avoid police officers restricting their movements does not in itself prove a desire to limit traffic flow.

apotheotic ,

Oh sure, I can absolutely see how they’d avoid getting the same punishments as the JSO folks. Don’t worry I don’t think you’re a Nazi for looking at the realistic scenario of whether they get the same punishments.

Mint is only interested in one metal.

Others exist in e waste. Somi assume it would just be reduced price.

Of course I am in no way agreeing the exporting of dangerous heavy metal waste etc is a good thing. Just not likely completely unwanted.

TheGrandNagus , (edited ) in Thames, Yorkshire and Northumbrian Water face £168m fines for sewage spills

Northumbrian Water made a total profit of £206 million in the financial year ending 31st March 2024.

They paid out £61 million in dividends.

Their fine for polluting Northumberland’s rivers and beaches — probably the most beautiful coastline in all of Britain, and officially recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) — was just £17 million.

And the fine doesn’t even appear to my eyes to be for that financial year alone, it appears to be for all the years of spillage (correct me if I’ve misunderstood!).

I’m not sure if they’ve received any previous fines for this, but if not, that works out as a £1.9 million fine for each year since we started measuring all outflows.

Ofwat are a fucking joke. Just like Ofgem, they care more about keeping the private foreign ownership happy than they do about actually regulating these companies for the good of UK citizens and for the wider environment.

If I ran a garage and was dumping brake fluid, oils, and other detritus into streets, drains, rivers, etc I rightly wouldn’t receive little slaps on the wrist. I’d be in prison.

Hossenfeffer , in Term-time holiday fine rise won't stop us, say parents
@Hossenfeffer@feddit.uk avatar

FInancially it’s a complete no brainer:

Fines issued to each parent have gone up from £60 to £80 per child which will be doubled if it happens again within three years. Those with a third fine in a three-year period now face prosecution.

So every second year spend £160 per child you’ve got but save potentially thousands of pounds on out-of-season holidays.

thehatfox ,
@thehatfox@lemmy.world avatar

It’s nearly the same for me, depending on what offers Dominos have that week.

We tend to mostly get Chinese takeaways now because it comes out at almost the same price as fish and chips but with a lot more variety. Even just a portion of chips from the chippy is pricey now.
