rah , in Journalist Richard Medhurst arrested under Britain’s Terrorism Act

A vocal critic of NATO’s war against Russia in Ukraine

Stopped reading there.

echodot ,

It was really clever how NATO convinced Russia to attack Ukraine, but then get their asses handed to them, so that NATO could come in with weapons to support Ukraine and so engage in this proxy war. That was some pretty sophisticated 3D chess that was.

Streamwave , (edited ) in Journalist Richard Medhurst arrested under Britain’s Terrorism Act

Good, for months now he’s openly expressed his support and encouragement for a proscribed terrorist organisation, i.e. Hamas. He’s not ambiguous about this: he thinks October 7th was great and that Hamas should do it again. He literally travelled to Iran and posted photos next to IRGC rockets and missiles with the caption “Long live the resistance”.

He’s not a journalist. He’s a vicious antisemite who takes pleasure in attacking Jews and is a proud and unrepentant promoter and supporter of terrorism.

Throw away the key. I don’t know why he’s allowed into the country at all.

Emperor OP , in Golden age of English universities could be over, says head of watchdog
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

The restrictions on foreign students needs to be lifted ASAP - they help subsidise the rest of higher education and cutting their numbers was just pandering to racists.

GarbageShoot ,

I’m pretty sure that pandering to racists is what passes for a popular mandate there.

jacksilver ,

On the flip side a lot of places then just become diploma mills pushing international students through programs because they pay full price. You see this a lot in the US, where money is first and quality education second.

HumanPenguin ,
@HumanPenguin@feddit.uk avatar

True. But foreign students have always been a huge amount of UK university funding. Basically from as far back as the 1800s.

Limiting them is not the solution. Nor is it the cause of diploma mills. Reduction in government funded research grants is what forced uni to move to tick box education. And government desire to avoid administration costs is what leads to Unis without the strong educational ethics taking advantage of it.

Wanderer , (edited )

The value of higher education comes from things like higher taxes and lower crime.

Trying to run a university like a business is fucking stupid.

Universities could cost the government a shit load of money for all I care. But losing British education in the name of foreign money is the exact case of short term thinking that has made this country as crap as it is.

If you want to think of some 50 year plan. It should be about educating more British students to do roles that are required. Not about bringing in foreign students to make a short term buck.

Wanderer , in Government should “urgently” legalise e-scooters says shared transport charity - says serious safety incidents are rare

But why won’t anyone think of the cars!

It will just be like cycle lanes and bus lanes. They take up all the space that could be used by cars! There isn’t enough space for cars! All these poor taxi drivers will be dead in the gutter and ambulances won’t be able to move if we legalise e scooters. Poor old ladies that can’t walk wont be able to use their car.

What this government needs to do is ban cycling, buses, taxis, pavements, wheelchairs, and invest in roads! We should turn all our railway lines to roads let’s face it no one uses trains. This country was built on cars!

Fucking idiots can’t do anything right.

Also ban speed cameras. I can’t get anywhere as fast as I used to and it’s dangerous to have to slam on my breaks every time I see a speed camera.

GreatAlbatross , in Government should “urgently” legalise e-scooters says shared transport charity - says serious safety incidents are rare
@GreatAlbatross@feddit.uk avatar

This seems like a good first step.
Move them out of the “technically illegal, but lots of people use them anyway” area, and into the “legal to use, but you have to register and carry some form of insurance”.

UrbonMaximus ,

Are you going to apply the same rules to pedal assist bikes? Or are you planning to single out e-scooters only, like tfl did for some reason?

GreatAlbatross ,
@GreatAlbatross@feddit.uk avatar

Honestly, I might even extend it to push bikes.

And make it so inexpensive to get the insurance that there is no excuse.

ladfrombrad ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

It’s something that’s irking me.

I’ve been a bicyclist, car driver, drive for a living and also have a VSett that goes a steady 35mph max which means I can lane check but, because I can’t fugging insure the thing means I’m always looking over my shoulder if I need to dump some keen eager copper.

I’m starting to think of selling it so I can get a eBike Surron instead and blend in with the local wildlife around here.

GreatAlbatross ,
@GreatAlbatross@feddit.uk avatar

If you give people a reasonable, legal way to do things, people will generally do them.
And the odd twat doing 30mph on the pavement is much more obvious, rather than blending in with people who would otherwise be following the laws.

ladfrombrad ,
@ladfrombrad@lemdro.id avatar

I think one thing that’s missing from the equation is testing and licensing to ride/drive them.

I know it’s an English forum here but you need to have a set of cojones to “drive” an escoot/EUC on our roads and I only use it to travel the short distance to work.

I’ve gone down arterial roads suited up with live Bradford traffic, and it’s not for the faint of heart lemmi tell ya :/

echodot ,

I wish the cycling proficiency test was a legal requirement to ride a bicycle.

There are so many people who drive dangerously and use bad cyclists as an excuse. You know the ones who decide that traffic lights don’t apply to them, and the ones that ride on the pavement at 20 mph and knock over little old ladies.

GreatAlbatross ,
@GreatAlbatross@feddit.uk avatar

I get the feeling that in the past, the effort required to cycle self-selected people a bit.
Now with cheap assisted bikes, it’s easier than ever to become a 100KG object travelling at 20mph.
So maybe it should have more requirements, in a “greater good” kinda way.

Kinda like when drones took off (heh). The rules for how to use model aircraft needed refining, because the barrier to flying a 2KG object near an airport became much lower.

echodot ,

You are correct China have no need to invade Taiwan. They could just not do it but they probably are going to anyway because they are like that they are expansionists, Communists always are.

Flax_vert ,

“communists”

wewbull ,

Like they didn’t invade Tibet, or exert their dominance over Hong Kong?

Flyberius , (edited )
@Flyberius@hexbear.net avatar

You know tibet was a feudal slave state before right? It made sense that, whilst throwing off their own shackles, they popped next door and got rid of those liege lords as well. You also know that the only people from Hong Kong who actually complain are rich business owners upset that they can’t exploit the poor like they could under British rule?

Taiwan was been a nationalist hold out ruled under a military dictatorship for most of its existence. Their leadership does not represent the will of the Chinese people, they are literally just a US puppet.

They will reintegrate with the mainland peacefully, despite western attempts to stir up a regional war. All the US can offer is blood and subjugation under capital. China offers progress and peace.

TheGrandNagus , (edited ) in Journalist Richard Medhurst arrested under Britain’s Terrorism Act

Is there a less clearly biased source for this? I struggle to take articles seriously when they use emotive language and hyperbole in seemingly every sentence.

This article also straight up accuses NATO of waging a proxy war against Russia and says they’re using Ukraine as their battleground.

It repeatedly calls Russia’s invasion “NATO’s war” ffs

Calling this person a journalist is also a bit of a joke. From what I can see, he mostly just peddles tankie content and conspiracies on his YouTube channel. If that’s what passes as being a journalist these days we’re in real trouble lol

Emperor ,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

Is there a less clearly biased source for this?

The first page and a half of my Google news search brings up just a whole host of partisan sources, from The Times of Israel to the Tehran Times. I can genuinely find nothing from a UK paper or broadcaster. That’s a bit weird.

Baggins ,

To you maybe.

echodot ,

No it’s not a large amount of money to anyone. We all live in the same economy we all have to pay for the same basic things. It’s less 1 months minimum wage. Seems like a very strangely picked limit likely by chosen by someone that doesn’t actually know the value of money and thinks it’s a lot.

Baggins ,

It’s a lot of money if you haven’t got any.

Don’t agree with that fundraiser though. They may just have wanted a new iPhone.

I don’t think the vast majority of people pulled in the UK would support China invading Taiwan so it’s weird that they’re framing it like this, as if that’s the only way that anyone would care.
