Kit , in Steam Deck Now Cheaper Than A Switch During Valve's Big Summer Sale

Still waiting for a good deal on the OLED model to convince myself to upgrade from the LCD. I’m hoping the holiday sale this year might bring some deals.

TheHobbyist ,

You might be better off waiting for a steam deck 2, possibly out next year?

NoneYa ,

I’m not sure about that. Index fans are still waiting for the sequel to their hardware.

I wonder if Gabe/Valve is content with the OLED model as is and doesn’t find a reason to make another so soon.

ggppjj ,

God, if this ends up with the steam deck 2 powering a standalone index 2 with redesigned knuckles 2 that can be used standalone as a Steam Controller 2…

It’s a fantasy, absolutely. The controller part especially probably wouldn’t work. But… I can dream.

narc0tic_bird ,

If they want to keep the Deck’s reputation of being able to run “most” PC games, they’ll have to make a new model sooner rather than later. I’m guessing they’re waiting for AMDs beefier RDNA 3.5 iGPUs. Pair that with more and faster memory and they should be good to go.

not_that_guy05 ,

Imagine they pull a half-life on us and release a steam deck 2 decades later.

DaGeek247 ,
@DaGeek247@fedia.io avatar

Last I heard was that the steam deck wasn't getting a version 2 update until there was next gen hardware to match it. Gaben isn't a big fan of regular sub five percent hardware refreshes that other companies are happy with.

Might be a name thing though. They did the OLED update, but it's not called the steam deck 2.

randomname01 ,

If they want Steam Deck to be a legitimate platform to target for developers - which seems to be the case and which seems to be working - they practically need to make sure they’re not refreshing it every 2-3 years with a spec bump. I’d personally be very surprised if Valve releases the next generation Steam Deck before 2026.

Based on what indications?

Unicode13051 ,
@Unicode13051@lemmyf.uk avatar

I upgraded to the OLED model when it came out. The screen looks much nicer, has a faster refresh and longer battery life. I definitely recommend it over the original, but it is a steep price when you already have one that works fine.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Man there aren’t many things I would upgrade from one gen to the next but the OLED is such a massive improvement in every single way (other than still having a single USB port).

AceFuzzLord , in Steam Deck Now Cheaper Than A Switch During Valve's Big Summer Sale

The best thing about a Steam Deck is the fact that with Emudeck, you can make your deck a much better Switch. The only thing you’ll be missing is lack of Internet features and the GUI.

I’m also always happy to try and convince anyone and everyone not to buy from Sintendo and buy hardware that isn’t inferior because I swear Sintendo hardware has absolutely been inferior compared to the competition since at at least n64.

Lettuceeatlettuce ,
@Lettuceeatlettuce@lemmy.ml avatar

“Sintendo” lol!!!

I’m gunna start using that haha.

PopOfAfrica ,

Honestly, I think we need to stop worrying about console power. It’s not contributing to games getting any better.

If anything, the absolutely insane graphical targets of modern games are causing fewer games being made.

it will probably be fixed by the time work gets off my ass and I can game.

Another user reported that theirs is already working. I don’t own the game, so I can’t verify.

theskyisfalling , in The Steam Deck is one of the best ways to play Elden Ring, and now Shadow of the Erdtree too

I found it awkward as shit to play on the Steam Deck so I ended up connecting an Xbox controller to actually make it a decent experience. The deck is already absurdly large and then having to carry around a controller and cable as well if I want to play is just not worth it IMO.

Oha ,

sounds like a you problem

Man, I hope this keeps up and in 5 years time supporting Linux will be the norm.

Check ProtonDB, or submit a bug report with the developer. External keyboard would get you around this issue for the time being.

I never played this game, but remember it being a huge deal. Is it a game geared towards kids and fans of Disney, or an objectively good game?

Mr_Wobble ,

All the Disney cameos and worlds is the main draw. The action combat was fun and frenetic at times. The early games looked pretty amazing at the time they were released.

That being said, the story is one of the most needlessly convoluted tropy mountains of garbage I have ever suffered through in 40 years of gaming.

Telorand ,

I always saw it as Final Fantasy with Disney and “Generic Shonen Anime” shoehorned into the universe.

just_another_person ,

Solved. Thanks!

MermaidsGarden ,
@MermaidsGarden@lemmy.world avatar

The first two games are classics of the PS2 era. If the idea of a Disney / Final Fantasy crossover full of ridiculous anime bullshit doesn’t appeal to you, you probably won’t have a good time.

just_another_person ,

Yeah. I figured. Thanks for the info.

NakariLexfortaine ,

The story is trope-y as all hell, but it definitely aims at hitting the “all ages” market, and doesn’t shy away from stepping into some heavier territory, though it’s handled in a way that kids get the “this is bad” message. Very much relies on “the power of friendship beats anything” framework.

The gameplay is fairly fun, but definitely play the updated versions. The original controls feel clunky compared to modern games.

Getting the entire story to this point involves sitting through a few “movies”(cutscenes stitched together, but officially done), as some of the games haven’t been remastered and are still locked to old hardware, or in the case of one game, was being taken offline.

This excited me, until I saw all the reviews about crashes. Hope that gets fixed.

autotldr Bot , in SteamOS 3.6.4 Preview for Steam Deck has fixes for DualSense, DisplayPort and more

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Fixed an issue where the system could crash on wakeup if an external DisplayPort monitor was connected.

Fixed an issue preventing sleep on some types of aftermarket SSDs.

Fixed an issue preventing update checks from working properly on network with an invalid IPv6 configuration.

Fixed an issue where touching the left trackpad after sleep could result in a spurious haptic click.

If this hasn’t addressed your current issues with SteamOS 3.6, what are you main problems right now?

For all the big changes coming in SteamOS 3.6 see my previous article.
