best way I’ve seen is to set your game to Windowed mode, and then in game set the resolution of the game to run at the client’s. Not super if you frequently move around, but if you always play one game from one client, at least it’s always a “per game” setting.

If you want a real challenge and want to have it a very specific way… a very fun nerd project is setting up VMs with GPUs that can run Steam, and those can always have a specific resolution. I did that for a while, it was a ton of fun, and a ton of wasted time because I just wanted to do it

rando OP ,

actually I should have mentioned this (adding to OP as well): most of the time I’m not playing game, just using laptop as a way to access PC / Deck (in desktop mode)

Client moonlight-stream.org

The game/screen is captured and streamed to the client, and screen size doesn’t matter. I tried playing Elden Ring on my phone and it worked 😂 although touch controls were shit

It’s important that people who gave a negative review over PSN go back and change their review now. If the community shows that review scores will go back to positive after getting what we want, it will make other companies in the future more willing to give up unpopular decisions.

Also the devs deserve a good review score from what I’ve seen, this wasn’t really their fault and I wouldn’t want them to suffer any more for it.

Aphelion ,

I agree with you except for the fact that Sony has yet to change the region lock out or remove the PSN account requirement on the Steam store listing. Talk is cheap and that’s all Sony has done so far.

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

That’s a valid point.

hobovision ,

I’m not saying they should be rewarded but the penalty should be removed. I’m not saying people should go give it a positive review if they didn’t already have one, I do think the negative reviews should at least be removed. If Sony reneges then there will obviously be a huge backlash again and “we ain’t gon get fooled again”.

stardust ,

Quick reversal shows that community is proactive in recognizing good and bad actions, so that even if reviews flip to good again it can quickly become negative. So I don’t think there is a need to hold off on changing reviews back to positive. Showing that the community is actively engaged is good to demonstrate.

Kecessa ,

No, it will make companies realize there’s no true consequence to acting like idiots

Fubarberry ,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

It’s important that there’s a benefit to them giving up something they wanted. If the reviews don’t get better after they gave up forcing PSN, then Sony would have been better off keeping the requirement. Other companies would look at this situation, and think that once Sony made the initial mistake, they would have been better off doubling down instead of backing off.

You’re wanting this to be an example of “don’t make stupid corporate decisions or you’ll get punished”, but that I’m very confident that companies will still make stupid decisions because they’re so out of touch they don’t realize their ideas are stupid. Instead it’s easier to get good results with situations like this if companies see that there’s a way out: to do what the people want and get their review score back.

Kecessa ,

A business treats me like shit they don’t get my business anymore, they can come begging all they want, it’s their fucking job to please their customers and they failed at it. I feel like you guys are just a bunch of Sony bots spamming the place all of the sudden.

Aphelion , in Helldivers 2 reviews start to improve after Sony backs down from enforcing PSN account linking

Right now, Sony has yet to update the Steam listing to remove the PSN account requirement or the region lock out. Don’t update your reviews to positive yet. Talk is cheap and all Sony has actually done it put out a statement to appease fans and stop the damage.

Strider ,

This a thousand times.

Kecessa ,

Or better yet, never update your review because fuck them.

Aphelion ,

It’s still a good game, and Arrowhead is trying to do right.

Kecessa ,

They had their chance, they failed, there’s thousands of devs doing better but you guys are too busy kissing their feet to see you’re being played for fools.

AceCephalon ,
@AceCephalon@pawb.social avatar

Think of it like this: Arrowhead, the developers, spent almost 8 years developing the game, getting funding throughout from Sony, which managed the publishing side of things so they could focus on game development.

Then, around 6 months before release, over 7 years of development up to that point, Sony wanted PSN to be required for the game, and clearly by release time, that was not enough time to even implement or test that well enough.

Their hands were tied years in advance, they couldn’t just let almost 8 years of their development time go to waste over one decision by their publisher, nor could they reasonably go against the publisher or get a new publisher only about 6 months before release.

On their end, they didn’t do anything particularly wrong, unless they could see the future over 7 years before and realize Sony was going to practically pull the rug out from under them with everything in Sony’s favor, a decision only actually made far more recently.

Kecessa ,

Yeah they released the game to markets where PSN isn’t available

If we don’t change reviews back then they have no reason to keep their word. Lose lose

We change reviews back they lie, we just change ours back to negative again and go about our days. Lose lose

You’ve got that backwards.

They’ve been convicted in the court of public opinion. This reversal doesn’t make them innocent of their crimes, but it does justify reducing the sentence to parole.

The black mark stays on their record, but they have the opportunity to start rebuilding trust. If they want good reviews on future titles they need to avoid squandering the chance to prove they deserve them.

hglman ,

Kecessa , (edited )

Oh, I don’t know, what do you think will teach them a lesson between losing sales for a few days or losing sales long term? 🤔

The financial impact will have been minimal and that’s what’s important to them, they were expecting to make X$ from this game this year, now Sony will have lost a week’s profit from few players because people are jumping back in when they could have made Sony lose years of profit from a lot of players by leaving negative reviews and by not playing or paying for currencies anymore.

It’s corporations we’re dealing with, not people, we don’t owe them anything, especially not pardon.

Wanna see how they learned they’re lesson?

kotaku.com/ghost-of-tsushima-pc-playstation-netwo….

capital ,

You linked a different game which we seem to know will require PSN before it’s sold.

So don’t buy games which require PSN?

If people don’t buy it and tell Sony it’s because of the PSN requirement, it will reinforce the point made during the Helldivers debacle.

Kecessa ,

Helldivers 2 required PSN from the moment it became available, it was just put on hold while the servers were catching up to the demand.

As I said, they didn’t learn a thing and will learn even less if people just go back to rewarding them with money because they put PSN implementation on hold for a single game.

capital ,

So the product was going to be changed to match what was advertised as a requirement?

What was everyone mad about?

Kecessa , (edited )

The game was made available in countries where PSN isn’t available and people don’t read requirements because they assume that if it’s available to them then they just need to have a PC that can run it and PC players hate having to use a bunch of services to play their games.

ElusiveClarity , in Can steam link run with guest aspect ratio / resolution

Another option may be to try using a dummy plug to fake a monitor with whatever resolution and aspect ratio you need. There are scripts that work with the sunshine/moonlight combo already listed that will switch your primary to the dummy plug when connected and switch back on disconnect.

rando OP ,

I’m sorry what is a dummy plug? Can u give an example? If i’m understanding it currently then it may make things quite convenient.

ElusiveClarity ,

Yea! It’s just an hdmi plug with no cable that makes your machine think that a monitor is plugged in. They are about $5-$10 online. You can set it to whatever resolution that you want so when you turn your main monitor off, this dummy monitor is still “on” and it will be what gets used when you start streaming to another device. There are ways to automatically switch to this dummy monitor and turn off all other monitors when you connect to stream and set everything back when you disconnect but I haven’t messed with that yet.

Still lied

paultimate14 , in Can steam link run with guest aspect ratio / resolution

I use Steam Link on the Deck to do this often. Personally I just leave it in 16:9- the Deck just displays horizontal black bars to get from 16:10 to 16:9. For me that’s just part of the Deck experience because even a ton of games I play locally are 16:9 only, or even 4:3.

You can choose to match the resolution as well. On your host PC go to steam -> settings -> remote play -> [advanced host options] and look for something like “Match desktop resolution to client”.

It also depends on what you are doing. I find that more resource-intensive games are often better streaming- better battery life with less heat and fan noise on the Deck. So changing the individual game settings to 1200x800 works well.

I don’t use that just to access files though. I have several folders on my desktop set up as SMB shares and installed another file explorer (Nautilus) to access it. I mostly use it to move around PS2, GameCube, and Wii roms- everything else is either just permanently on my SD card or I’m able to regularly install via Steam.

For non-Steam game saves, I set up SyncThing to synchronize across devices.

PatheticGroundThing , in Helldivers 2 reviews start to improve after Sony backs down from enforcing PSN account linking

They put out a single statement with no action, and everyone online instantly went “WE WON IT’S TIME TO CHANGE BACK TO POSITIVE!” and then a lot of cringy RP about democracy.
