Hmm, I just discovered Iggy Pop’s music for the first time so I’ll go with Yelgrun, the Vorta in The Magnificent Ferengi, DS9, Season 6, one of my personal favorite episodes.
If you’ve never listened to The Idiot or Lust For Life then drop everything you’re doing and put them on, they are fantastic albums.
Kurn is a really fun character that Tony Todd did a perfect job with. But it was nice to see he has such great acting chops beyond the scope of Kurns rather one note personality. I cry at the drop of a hat when watching TV, this episode makes me ugly sob every time.
That was a great episode/finale. Kovich being Daniels made me gasp and clap. That was great. I’m sad the series is over because I really liked Rayner this season as a foible to all the cheerfulness on Disco. The only thing I would want in a new season would have been more Rayner and more Grudge.
It was a nice reveal but to be honest, what kind of importance did it really have? The Daniels from ENT was quite involved in the story, Kovich was more a side character that here and there gave some input. Looking back, how does knowing he is Daniels change anything in the events he was part of? I might not remember his involvement well enough to be fair.
One thing I disliked was, Owo and Detmer are away half the season, and I saw an article that the actresses just had different projects so that’s fine. They got replaced by… People whose characters were never really developed since they were stand-ins. Don’t even recall their names. And then when its the big goodbye celebration scene on Discovery its Owo and Detmer there, but not the two replacements? Goddamn Rayner was there too but you left out these two? That was cold.
I'm seeing I'm in the vast minority of one who didn't enjoy Lower Decks. I found it loud, frenetic, and shrill. I caught most of the first season before tapping out. I haven't liked Discovery. Picard season two went to the zoo and I didn't go along on the ride with it, or returned to check out season 3.
But I am very much enjoying Strange New Worlds (the musical episode aside). Looking foward to more SNW, and Starfleet Academy, and since the "movie" coming out is an offshoot of Discovery I'm not all that jazzed for it even with Michelle Yeoh, but I'll probably check it out.
I’m in the middle where I felt like I could see the end coming over the last season. The premise seemed exhausted and the plots a bit of a stretch. I think I even posted somewhere that it wouldn’t last much longer.
So while I’m sad to see it go, as someone that was a fan of the show, this feels somewhat natural to me.
You should definitely watch season 3 of Picard. While the fanservice is fun, it was actually written by a competent team that retconned much of the bullshit from the other seasons and gave TNG the swan song it deserved.
I started with Voyager way back in the day because that’s what was on TV at the time. I picked it up just fine. There isn’t really a wrong way to start watching. If you just jump in wherever, at most you might miss out on some Easter eggs or on the impact of some callbacks, but for the most part the idea of Star Trek is so infused in pop culture you’ll pick up most of it.
I love TOS, but it seems like a major chunk of Trek fandom has either skipped it or only watched an episode or two. If you want to get to know the TOS characters but can’t get into the show, start with the second Star Trek movie and watch through the 6th movie before starting on TNG.
TNG starts out pretty rough. It has some issues finding it’s voice, with many initial episodes being recycled or heavily inspired by TOS episodes. It has good early episodes, but often feels “off”. Good episodes throughout the first two seasons, but it becomes consistently solid in the third. TNG set the baseline for modern Trek.
DS9 comes after TNG. It’s very good right from the start, although it really, really gets good when the more overarching storylines pick up.
Voyager starts part way through DS9, but it really does it’s own thing.
ENT is a prequel. People are ultra harsh on the first two seasons, which I think is somewhat overkill. The first two seasons have some bad episodes, some good episodes and a good number of “meh”. Season 3 is an attempt at grimdark Star Trek, which is a divisive taste. Season 4 is genuinely really great. The writers finally figured out their niche.
Tilly was a bit too much with Raynor. I get she wants him to connect but also he is a commanding officer and he got the gist of many crew members in a short time. Maybe this is supposed to be a joke on how much emotional talking there is in Disco?
Grey/Gray(?) is a bit annoying. Basically forcing it out of Adira to break up. I guess that means no more of them going forward. Hope Adira finds someone else to be happy with.
I am glad they talked about the fact the Trill dude could have just given away the position of the tech instead of sending them off on the riddles. But honestly, I don’t get how those scientists had all these precautions and then still felt like, yes, some day the universe will be ready and not abuse this tech. Destruction of the tech makes a lot more sense. But maybe they’ll clear that up.
Edit:oh and wtf was that scene at the end in the caves. The actually nice monologue but all the guardians and Adira just weirdly standing there while the monologue is going. Then only at the end we see they released that symbiont into the pool, like no explanation at all what that is for. Is it going to die? Is that always done? Did the host just die during the last minutes of the show? Give some background please!
To your edit: It seems like some cut content that would better explain Kalzara’s parting words “Thank you, for now I can rest,” the Tilly/Raynor scene, and hastily followed by the pool ceremony. I can get unexplained world building, as with Mad Max: Fury Road (the random mud stilt walkers, for example). 30 seconds of “I’ve fulfilled my sworn duty and will no longer be joined” might have sufficed. This was “Reel 3 missing” kind of messy. Still intrigued by the overall story, just a little let down by the execution.
I’m curious too because I’ve definitely heard that he’s a giant dick but never really looked into it. He did a great job with the Sisko and they even put some episodes in addressing racism in the modern world so too bad he’s apparently a dick but oh well I guess.
Personal experience. He was screaming at some fans who went to say thank you for his work. I’ve heard other things from people who’ve met him and had similar experiences as well as people having worked with him. He’s a bit bitchy about Star Trek now.
Personally, I’d have liked it it be a section 31 Time Travel reunion, and had Malcolm Reed, Trip Tucker, Georgiou, Ash Tyler, Julian Bashir and clone Boimler, but a) we’d have heard about that by now and b) I admit it might be a bit fan-wankery to support a standalone film.
