Skyrmir , in Did some work recently

Now I’m feeling called out. I keep having these stacks of if statements that could just be a big ass list of and and and, but then it runs into the debate of how much crap should be in one line of code? Especially knowing, at some point, it’s going to be my dumb ass stepping through trying to figure out why this one edge case is the reason we’re not hitting the inner code.

Programming is just plumbing with words

stepanzak , in I code with fear

I read the username as Fear the Python: the game and was actually excited about a horror game about python.

KillingTimeItself , in remember, if your gf isn't open source and running locally, you don't own her

you can bet your ass my partner of any significant status is getting the open source software treatment as soon as possible.

Mostly because i actually just cannot use anything else, but we’ll pretend it’s noble instead.

    Shareni ,

You’re going to start accepting pull requests from the community?

    pimp

    KillingTimeItself ,

im not rolling my own code here, i’m rolling other peoples code, that’s their pull request to deal with, not mine.

baseless_discourse , in remember, if your gf isn't open source and running locally, you don't own her

Ha, like “real girlfriend” is a thing.

    Happy valentine’s day, everyone!

    xmunk , in onlick

My company doesn’t appreciate my taste in programming flavors. I hoped to whet their appetite with a lunch and learn but when I tried to demo the functionality on my bosses computer I ended up being escorted from the building.

ColeSloth , in Tough break, kid...

Sounds like someone’s worried about how easily replaced they’ll be in the future…

    Prunebutt ,

You sound like a class traitor

    ColeSloth ,

Realist, maybe. Often a pessimist. Never really a class traitor. Besides, I’m more blue collar than white collar, so I’ve never gotten the luxury of working from home at a higher pay, so as far as being the same class…in the sense of rich vs everyone else, sure.

    Prunebutt ,

Your snide comment just seemed a bit too glee about people about to lose their job. Or at least: lacking in solidarity with them.

Forget the distinction between blue and white collar, or higher and lower income: these aren’t classes and the distinction onlyserves toseparateus in class struggle. I meant the “wage dependant class here”.

    belated_frog_pants ,

Looks like someone is excited about shit content pumped out as fast as computers can munge shit to spit

    ColeSloth ,

Nah, that’s going to blow, and I was talking about just that several months ago. The internet is going to be completely fucked, now. It has a nice little run of the golden years from like 1995 through about 2012. Decade after that was all downhill and the last year or so gas been a dumpster fire that’s still getting bigger.

Yeah, writing prompts it’s the long term goal, programming will be obsolete.

Nobody that can write a problem in a structured language, taking edge cases into account, will be able to write a prompt for a LLM.

Prompt writers will be the useful professionals, because NO big tech company is trying to make it obsolete making AI ubiquitous and transparent, aiming it to work for natural language requests made by normal users or simply from context clues. /s

Prompt engineering it’s the griftiest side of the latest AI summer. Look a who is selling the courses. The same people that sold crypto courses, metaverse courses, Amazon dropship store courses…

    KeenFlame ,

You sound like you think prompt writer is an actual job man chill out doesn’t even exist

    best_username_ever ,

Sounds like science fiction. No proof that it’s useful right now except copy pasta from StackOverflow.

marcos , in Should I cancel?

    [Confirm Cancellation] [Cancel Confirmation]

(Or maybe on the other order, I dunno.)

ZombiFrancis , in FLOSS communities right now

Lemmy communities with discord channels are really quite something.

    onlinepersona OP ,

    Extra special.

paddirn , in FLOSS communities right now

I use Discord with friends for a weekly online D&D game in what’s basically a glorified conference calls. It’s fine for that use-case, but it fucking sucks for trying to do anything organized or having on-topic conversations or looking up any sort of stored information. I kind of hate it when game companies have shit on there and you have to search/sort through hundreds of unconnected chat snippets to find answers to questions.

    RandomStickman ,

Basically how I use Discord as well,. My favourite feature of Discord is when I get an "@everyone" ping from big servers and I click into the notification and the message disappeared into the void without fail.

    marduk ,

I’ve developed the muscle memory of immediately disabling notifications for any new server I join.

That is extremely annoying. Hate it when it happens.

    sukhmel ,

I think this phenomenon has been new to the last few years for about 20 years already

But I also don’t think there are many people who do this seriously
