Federal judge temporarily halts Biden plan to lower credit card late fees to $8

The judge…

The temporary nationwide injunction imposed by Judge Mark Pittman in the Northern District of Texas is a win for the big banks and major credit card companies, which collect billions in revenue each year in late fees and were looking to stop the proposal from going into effect.

You know it’s weird, it seems like I can predict the way the judge votes, and likely which half of the US they live in, solely by the headline of “federal judge blocks Biden administration plan to…” with 100% accuracy.

Haven’t been wrong yet.

Seems almost like there’s some sort of political motivation here, not what’s best for the people.

Almost seems like the system is working… against the people?

But no that couldn’t be. Surely a judge, who sits at a federal level, would never be swayed by something so petty as kindergarten politics.

CosmicTurtle0 ,

If you read the reactions from banks, it’s sickening. They are threatening to raise fees elsewhere, or interest rates, to “make up for lost revenue” because heaven forbid they just make less money and be okay with it.

These companies make obscene amounts of money.

They don’t need that much money.

It’s sickening.

Cerothen ,

Well just hold on there a minute, if they raise interest or charge higher fees on things that doesn’t disproportionately negatively impact poor people then it might be less predatory… And we can’t have that, we gotta keep punching those that can’t hit back.

caboose2006 ,

Hey bub, don’t insult kindergarten politics like that!

He should make rental application fees illegal.

bamboo ,

Also advertising a low rent and then tacking on sometimes hundreds of dollars in “admin fees” or similar. The advertised price should be, to the penny, the size of the monthly check.

jo3shmoo ,

Aaaaand yes, this judge was another Trump appointee.

YerbaYerba ,

Same judge also made a ruling blocking student loan debt relief 2 years ago.

AA5B ,

The article says he did try to pass on the case, but it was sent back to him. Our legal system is isn a sad state, where even the judges can’t do anything about court shopping

disguy_ovahea ,

He appointed a record 54 Appeals court judges and 174 District court judges in one term, as well as nominating 3/9 of the Supreme Court. He works hard and fast for himself under the noise screen of the news.

When will you finally understand!

both parties are the same, despite reality suggesting otherwise.

We really can’t have anything nice in this country, can we?

GiddyGap ,

Vote for someone who wants change.

Unfortunately, a lot of people complain about lack of change and then neglect to vote for people who want change.

People who want no change are much better at voting on election day, which adds up to no change.

Isn’t that what we all thought we were doing when we voted for Obama?

GiddyGap ,

Lots of things did change with Obama and lots changed with Biden. But lots of people still vote for regressives. And with 60 votes needed in the Senate for real reform, it’s a very slow process.

“How could you even think of starving these poor, little corporations the very necessary income those late fees bring. Think of the poor CEOs not able to even afford a second yacht.”
