“By ‘free speech,’ I simply mean that which matches the law. I am against censorship that goes far beyond the law.”

– Musk Tweeted that after getting criticized for censoring Twitter in Turkey and India. So apparently if North Korea allowed Twitter, he’d happily censor away since that would be the law.

fireweed , (edited ) in Biggest apartment construction boom in decades likely to bring renters uneven relief

Criminally neglected by this article: Yesterday’s luxury housing is today’s affordable housing.

The problem is we underbuilt for decades and don’t have enough “yesterday” housing to fill “today’s” demand, and new affordable housing often doesn’t pencil out without unsustainable amounts of government subsidies. This article makes the NIMBY-fuel mistake of bemoaning the luxury housing as basically useless without acknowledging that 1) these units will become more affordable over time and are part of a necessary return to rent price stability and a balanced market, and 2) in low-vacancy markets, luxury housing relieves pressure on mid-price housing which in turn relieves pressure on low-price housing, which is not enough to resolve the issue but still better than building nothing.

Too often is the argument “we shouldn’t allow this apartment/condo building because it’s not going to be affordable” followed by “we shouldn’t allow this subsidized affordable apartment/condo building because it will strain local resources/destroy the character of the neighborhood/increase crime and traffic/uglify the neighborhood with its cheap appearance.” Opposition to luxury housing is the top rung on the NIMBY ladder, and NIMBYism leads to housing shortages, which lead to affordability crises.

Yeah, no meat eating dog lover wants to admit it’s just as cruel to raise cows and pigs for meat. We have an arbitrary definition of animals that are friends vs food. I think this whole anti dog meat thing is an interesting commentary. This is coming from a dog loving and owning meat eater.

Hera , in For the Love of God, Stop Microwaving Plastic

I wonder about hot food in plastic containers? I try to avoid but some places my family loves puts piping hot food in plastic.

LillyPip OP , (edited )

I have a set of nesting glass containers like this that only cost like $40 for the whole set. You can probably find similar sets for cheaper; that was the first google result I found.

Just dump the contents from your plastic container into one of those and voilà – no more nanoplastics. :)

e: oh, it just occurred to me you weren’t talking about reheating in their packaging, but how it’s served. I suppose if it were me and I knew them well, I might try to gently mention to them that their packaging isn’t great, and maybe suggest they look into a paper-based option instead. More likely I’d puss out and never say anything, because I’m a social coward. Best of luck to you, and I’d say never reheat in the package they give you.

Hera ,

Yup, I use glassware at home almost exclusively. Just that piping hot restaurant food in plastic ware. Honestly, I just rather cook my family food that I know is made with love and care. Can’t do it all the time though.

RagingNerdoholic ,

I’m guessing it has less to do with heat (unless you’re bringing it close to the melting point) and more to with microwaves breaking down plastics at the microscopic level.

Hera ,

That makes sense. I use glass Tupperware at home and always cringe when my husband brings home the plastic ware from a restaurant piping hot.

massive_bereavement ,
@massive_bereavement@kbin.social avatar

It's a combination of heat, UV irradiation, and hydrolysis that happens within a microwave and affects said plastic containers.

However the article refers towards polypropylene as the main cause of concern, due to its amorphous nature, it tends to break into microplastics and nanoplastics.

The earlier tends to be discarded by our kidneys (at a cost), the latter can get through membranes due its size and cause different types of trouble.

LittleBoBanny ,

I really would not do that, just given what I have read (that the plastic breaks down when heated, which is what the food would do).

Hera ,

I wouldn’t do it at home. I’m wondering about restaurants that do this. Idk but I’m sure it isn’t good.

Reverendender ,

From the article: “In general, they found that hotter storage temperatures cause more plastic particles to leak into food. For example, one polypropylene container released over 400,000 more microplastics per square centimeter after being left in a hot room than after being stored in a refrigerator (which still caused nearly 50,000 microplastics and 11.5 million nanoplastics per square centimeter to shed into the stored fluid). “I got terrified seeing the amount of microplastics under the microscope,” Hussain says.”

realcaseyrollins , in For the Love of God, Stop Microwaving Plastic

Y'all are microwaving plastic??

yip-bonk ,
@yip-bonk@kbin.social avatar

Yes. People. Stahp.

Willer ,

while i am a bit sceptic of the value of this article, no i dont. I have never in my life put plastic in the microwave and never in my life did i think that this would be a good idea. Not because of conviction or anything but because i developed a fight and flight reaction towards heating plastic.

usualsuspect191 ,

There are tons of foods packaged in plastic that are (according to the directions) meant to be microwaved, never mind people heating up leftovers in takeout containers or whatever. It’s super common. And even if you never do it yourself, I can almost guarantee that your favourite restaurant does so you’re still consuming foods microwaved in plastic one way or another.

JustAManOnAToilet ,

Shit, I just had steam in bag brussel sprouts the other day.

girlfreddy ,
@girlfreddy@mastodon.social avatar

@JustAManOnAToilet @usualsuspect191

I stopped 30+ years ago after microwaving chili and it melted the side of the plastic container.

Fyi there's been stories about this for years (usually having to do with chemical contamination from the plastic) but the FDA never seemed to look into it.

Imo that's because Big Oil didn't want them to, because it would not only remove a HUGE source of their revenue but would also open them up to massive lawsuits.

Some people have cheap plates

LillyPip OP , (edited )

I’m literally doing it as we speak. :(

e: I’ve been buying Steamables because I’m disabled and can’t easily cook. For those who don’t know, it’s basically a meal in a plastic bag, that you microwave for six minutes, and apparently the literal worst thing you can do.

Now I think of it, as a disabled and poor person, I’m struggling to think of a meal I can make that isn’t riddled with plastics. I guess we’re doomed.

starelfsc2 ,

Huel or Soylent isn’t too expensive (if you get the powder) and I’d say it tastes reasonable. Huel especially has some great ingredients in it.

Reverendender ,

Do you have friends who could bring you meals? I always make too much, and would happily do this

LillyPip OP ,

No, but honestly at 54, I’m probably 87% microplastics at this point anyhow lol.
