mysoulishome , in (OFFICIAL) Spanish court starts new probe against Shakira for alleged tax fraud
@mysoulishome@lemmy.world avatar

Can’t imagine what my day would have been like if I hadn’t known this.

MicroWave OP , in The Senate Judiciary panel will consider ethics rules for the Supreme Court
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

The committee’s legislation would impose new ethics rules on the court and a process to enforce them, including new standards for transparency around recusals, gifts and potential conflicts of interest. Democrats first pushed the legislation after reports earlier this year that Justice Clarence Thomas participated in luxury vacations and a real estate deal with a top GOP donor — and after Chief Justice John Roberts declined to testify before the committee about the ethics of the court.

Moyer1666 ,

The fact that testifying to Congress about their ethics issues is optional is crazy to me. He should have been required and there should be consequences for not doing it.

OldWoodFrame , in Only 1% of US Homes Have Changed Hands So Far This Year, Redfin Says

This is me for sure. Would have moved, was looking, but rates shrink my potential pool of houses pretty small and the lack of anyone ELSE moving shrinks it even further. Decided to wait a year and try again.

Dasnap , in Pooping only every 3 or more days linked with cognitive decline, research finds
@Dasnap@lemmy.world avatar

So if I go twice a day, am I going to become the next Einstein?

venusenvy47 ,

Yes, and during day before a colonoscopy you will become super Einstein - based on the amount of time you spend on the toilet.

o0joshua0o ,

“Increased risk was also found among those who pooped more than twice daily,”

Viking_Hippie ,

So Dasnap is right that pooping exactly twice a day will inevitably make them a supergenius?

Dasnap ,

I’m a Goldilocks shitter.

Viking_Hippie ,

You should write motivational books about your exploits in succeeding via precision defecation 😂

Dasnap ,
@Dasnap@lemmy.world avatar

Push-ups, sit-ups, and plenty of juice.

freeman ,

Compared with people who pooped once a day, constipated participants had significantly worse cognition equivalent to three years more of chronological cognitive aging, the authors found. Increased risk was also found among those who pooped more than twice daily, though these higher odds were small.

This feels like one of those correlation = causation assumptions.

MicroWave OP , in Alabama due to resume executions despite botching three last year
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

Foa said: “Lethal injection is designed to look like a clean, medical process. But lethal injection executions go wrong all the time. In Alabama, these have been demonstrably, miserably botched executions. Joe Nathan James Jr’s execution took three-and-a-half hours, prison officials repeatedly trying and failing to get access to a vein.”

MicroWave OP , in Florida Board of Education approves new Black history standards that critics call ‘a big step backward’
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

The new standards require instruction for middle school students to include “how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit,” a document listing the standards and posted in the Florida Department of Education website said.

Unpaid internship is also pretty fucked up though (unless there’s a lot of mentorship involved)

amanneedsamaid ,

Holy fuck. That is unbelievably backwards.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I had a kindergarten teacher lie to us that her grandfather had a slave and he liked being a slave. I don’t even know why she did that, but this reminds me of it. Just straight up bullshit about slavery.

captainlezbian ,

She probably did it because it’s a really comfortable thing to believe, but it’s obviously bullshit so she just kept saying it to keep believing it

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, but also it was the 1980s, so I don’t think it was even possible even if she was really old (she seemed like she was, but I was 5).

kitonthenet ,

Oh so it’s not just that activists and critics read that as saying “slavery was beneficial,” that’s just the plain reading of the law

One problem I have noticed is that sometimes the page title is not as good or appropriate as the headline at the top of the article and I think either should be valid. The title doesn’t explain things as well or it’s cut off or it is far more clickbaity and it triggers the bot. Is there a way for it to scan both and then make its call?

NewsAutoMod OP ,

I can see what I can do. I’m currently relying on a non-perfect module, so changing that might be a hassle, but I’m sure I can figure it out (:

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The woman in Indiana was killed in the gazebo of her own apartment complex by a neighbor. I don’t think it should be necessary to carry a gun when you’re in a place like that. We shouldn’t have to be armed every time we so much as step out of our front door. That is not a society I want to live in.
