corsicanguppy , in California school board adopts social studies textbooks that include gay rights after warnings from governor

The board voted 3-2 on May 16 to reject the curriculum, with some board members claiming there was not enough parental involvement in the creation process and making comments attacking Milk.

Yeah. I want a bunch of unqualified losers drowning out the professionals with their racism and hate.

What is with America and randos thinking they known more than actual professionals with a lifetime of work experience and learning? This is like epidemiologist hate all over again.

FizzyD ,

I work in education and I can kind of understand the response from the board. To me, it didn't seem like they were against the curriculum, rather they wanted to cover everyone's ass and make sure there was minimal backlash. I'm glad they new curriculum got pushed through though.

I don’t really see how this strategically advances any goals. I’m willing to bet it’s a mistake by one side or the other rather than any intent. The target has no value or purpose and makes no sense. Maybe as terror or something but ehhhh

Are there any images of the missile debris floating around the various telegrams? Would be interested in seeing exactly what weapon it was.

oce ,

Destroying the Ukrainian culture could be one as Poutine’s propaganda is saying that Ukraine is not a real country with a real history but a part of Russia that needs to be recovered.

Lenins2ndCat ,

Nah that makes no sense mate.

oce ,
@oce@jlai.lu avatar

What doesn’t make sense to you?

Lenins2ndCat ,
@Lenins2ndCat@lemmy.world avatar

Mainly the part where an attack intended to destroy the building would be very easy but this is just mild damage. I mean that in the sense of it not being catastrophic rather than implying that this occurring to a religious building isn’t upsetting, it’s not a pleasant thing. The point being that when they intend to actually blow stuff up there’s usually very little left over of the targets, which leads me to believe this wasn’t the target.

Which is why I’m interested in seeing what hit it. I’m surprised there are no photos of the missile debris so far, there are in almost every single other attack as it’s the information that validates a lot of information for international eyes.

oce ,
@oce@jlai.lu avatar

They could also just use it as a symbol without willing to use more ammunition for a non strategic target.

Lenins2ndCat ,
@Lenins2ndCat@lemmy.world avatar

They aren’t using it as a symbol though, blowing up a religious building is not exactly a move that would be popular among russians. Which is why they’re denying that it was Russian munitions and trying to claim that it was Ukrainian anti-air missiles falling back on buildings after trying to shoot down other things. To use it as a symbol you kinda have to say it was you.

What this will become however is a symbol of reconstruction for Ukraine, which is not at all beneficial to Russia’s strategic interests. Hence why I lean to it being a mistake of some sort. Given the accuracy their missiles have though that’s hard to justify as well, unless it’s not actually the main payload of a missile and is instead one of the earlier stages that gets split, like the fuel tubes sections. This is why actually seeing the missile debris is useful, you can figure out whether it was the target or not based on whether it’s the payload section or some other part of the missile.

Building is nothing. Human lives is everything. Even one death is more than enough for our bloody “leader” to rot in hell.
Sincerely yours, Russian fellow.

SaddieTheMad ,
@SaddieTheMad@lemmy.world avatar

You are right about that. I would add that non-human lives are also valuable. I especially believe animal suffering is terrible, ours and others. We are enough to help humankind and also repair injustices to and help other beings.

What I wanted to comment is that I felt this image intensely because it is kind of symbolic. It represents the beauty we are capable of, the way we can be brought together by beliefs and dreams, all destroyed by greediness, selfishness, and unnecessary violence. It is tragic. It is not the value of the building itself, which is debatable, but this I explained.

Sorry if my English is weird.

  • Lemjukes , (edited ) in Black man who says he was elected mayor of Alabama town alleges that White leaders are keeping him from position

    It’s a shame, aside from all the racism, Newbern actually seems like a lovely little southern small town.

    To clarify, this came in response to looking up Newbern on Google maps and seeing the only photo attached to the town is a group of smiling black women celebrating the 4th of July. If that’s the representation of the town, it seems like a nice place.

    I probably should have said more specifically ‘aside from the racist white minority leadership it seems like it could be a really nice place.’ Nice places can have shit leaders. Was happy to see the town hall already has some one star reviews in response to this story. Hopefully more attention will help them toss the bigots to the curb.

    gravitas_deficiency ,

    I dunno, man. The racism sounds like it’s one of the towns primary characteristics.

    Jarmer ,

    Yeah lol. You can’t really “aside from the racism” when that’s their primary focus.

    Lemjukes ,

    Pretty sure the more than %70 black/African American town population might disagree with you. Seems pretty unkind and disingenuous to paint a whole town as a shithole because some assholes are in charge.

    MossyFeathers , in Judge orders Montana health clinic to pay nearly $6 million over false asbestos claims

    After reading the full article, I’m not convinced that they were false claims. It sounds to me more like the railroad company is trying to avoid as many lawsuits as possible for helping turn the town into an asbestos contaminated superfund site.

    JustZ ,
    @JustZ@lemmy.world avatar

    Sounds like an issue with the Medicare Secondary Payer Act. If the employers are already liable for the claims under workers’ comp., providers shouldn’t be billing Medicare. That’s shifting the cost of asbestos diseases onto taxpayer, instead of corporations and their insurers, who ignored the risks of asbestos and ensured their workers would die young.

    RaincoatsGeorge , in In an ‘extraordinary’ move, Mississippi AG tries to overturn officer’s manslaughter conviction

    They tried to claim that because he only had ‘a superficial injury’ on his head the brain bleed couldn’t possibly have been caused by the officer. I fucking hate when nonmedical professionals try to wade into the discussion as if they have any capacity to weigh in. You don’t know shit about shit, shut the fuck up and stay in your lane.

    A head injury requires no external damage whatsoever to be devastating . This case is a clear cut example of that. What’s more if this guy was just getting out of the hospital for a stroke they would have had him on blood thinners of some sort, any injury could become catastrophic easily. Not that this matters, you slam anyone’s head into the ground and it takes nothing to become fatal, we see it all the time.

    SantaClaus , in Court strikes down limits on filming of police in Arizona

    If I had entrepeneurial spirit I would start a company called CopCam. A cheap but good camera, very recognizable as a camera with a red light on the front and big letters COPCAM. You’d attach it to the dashboard and it would come with a short overview of legislation per state (or european country depending on the market) of your rights as a citizen to film a traffic stop. I would hope cops would recognize it as a sogn they stopped someone who is well aware of their rights and os filming the whole thing, and this way they would behave.

    Edit for slogan: copcam: to observe and protect.

    ashok36 ,

    There is a flaw in your logic. Cops hate people that know their rights more than anybody. The sooner you assert your rights, the faster they misbehave. After all, it’s not like there will ever be an consequences for them.

He knows it’s not going well, and maybe he knows that everything he’s trying won’t actually help, but desperate people don’t reason well.

    I’d pity him if he weren’t also human garbage.

    Disagree on richest since most of his value (like everyone else on these lists) is from his stock portfolio.

    The actual richest and most powerful people rarely are on these lists.
