PrincessLeiasCat , in Jimmy Carter's 99th birthday celebration moved to Saturday to avoid federal shutdown threat

This is some weird shit.

Aaron , in Jimmy Carter's 99th birthday celebration moved to Saturday to avoid federal shutdown threat

Imagine being in hospice and your birthday still has the power to shut down a major world government.

Jimmy is a good man. He deserves that honour.

Wooshock , in ‘Unconscionable’: Baby boomers are becoming homeless at a rate ‘not seen since the Great Depression’ — here’s what’s driving this terrible trend

Maybe I’m dumb for not lumping an entire generation of people into this huge group of bad actors who intentionally and maliciously hurt all subsequent generations.

The issue is money. What part of “people don’t have money” is so hard to digest?

The disparity has become much much wider over the years, and that is the issue.

Couldbealeotard ,
@Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world avatar

The ones hording wealth and property are not the ones going homeless.

winterayars ,

Here’s a map of the 1980 presidential election.

Lest you think that a one-off, here’s 1984.

Boomers loved that withered, hateful, hollowed out motherfucker.

(Yeah that’s the electoral college and the popular vote was a lot closer, but that’s a level of support no President has had since in even one election let alone two.)

Drivebyhaiku , in A QAnon 'queen' and the Canada town that wants her gone

Jeez, what the heck did I just read?

Elric , in Florida school district orders librarians to purge all books with LGBTQ characters

Wow purging lgbtq books in Florida while Ontario is purging any book written before 2008… can we all please stop purging books it never ends well!

bobman , in YouTube prankster says he had no idea he was scaring man who shot him

Let me guess, they’re telling me about footage without showing me the footage.

Modern “journalism”, everyone.

atempuser23 , in Houston approves $5M to relocate residents living near polluted Union Pacific rail yard

That’s not very much money at all to relocate people. This is maybe enough for 25 households.

    If you own a home in the area any equity you have there has probably been made pretty worthless. It would make it pretty hard to move if you couldn’t sell your home to afford another.

    Lemonparty ,

    The fuck you gonna buy house for <175K plus moving expenses? Not like you’re gonna be able to easily sell your house in THE CANCER ZONE.

    atempuser23 ,

    where are you getting a home for less than 170k?

    Woovie ,

    Houston

    atempuser23 ,

    Nope. Looks like I missed the line where the total funds are 35 million. 350k is enough to get a house and move an established family.

    Salamendacious ,
    @Salamendacious@lemmy.world avatar

    The article says, “relocating families from among the 100 properties that have been affected by the contamination could cost up to $35 million. The city is looking at other sources, including federal funding, to help pay for the relocation program.”

    dylanmorgan , in New rule will cut federal money to college programs that leave grads with high debt, low pay

    Here’s an idea:private universities whose endowment has grown year over year are stripped of nonprofit status. Public universities are completely funded by the federal government and education is provided tuition free. Community colleges expand to offer trade school education as well, also free. Students must complete a course of study in the allotted time and work for 2 years before returning for additional education, including graduate degrees.

    Wahots , in Germany bans far-right group that tried to indoctrinate children with Nazi ideology
    @Wahots@pawb.social avatar

    Good for Germany. I think they could teach us a thing or two about how to solve our own problems with far right groups.

    yetAnotherUser ,

    But not a single thing more than one or two.

    Because the group was founded and led by a Nazi in 1951 who believed in the exact same thing as the Nazi party but wasn’t a member, therefore avoiding pretty much any and all consequences.

    barsoap ,

    I don’t think it was possible to be an SS member and not also be member of the NSDAP. Be that as it, may, same difference anyways.

    yetAnotherUser ,

    Here’s a snippet from a book I randomly happen to own a PDF copy of about him:

    https://feddit.de/pictrs/image/5da55ba0-fc9c-4952-bc57-c207c05ecbb1.jpeg

    Rough translation:

    Unharmed, the Nordic Faith Community of Wilhelm Kusserow survived the denazification because he wasn’t a member of the Nazi party. Additionally, he managed to be perceived as a victim by authorities, thereby avoiding post-war reeducation in interment camps. Afterwards he founded the Artgemeinschaft e.V. [rest of name] which adopted almost the same creed as the former Nordic Faith Community.

    Psythik , (edited ) in Hyundai and Kia recall nearly 3.4 million vehicles due to fire risk and urge owners to park outdoors

    The article says that the Genesis Coupe is included in the recall, but it doesn’t specify the years like they did with the other models. So I assumed that meant that every year model is affected but I just checked my VIN and it says 0 recalls found.

    Edit: Car is a 2010

    Drinvictus , in The Biden administration is expected to keep cap on refugees admitted to the US at 125,000

    I had no idea there was a cap. I wonder how accurate that 51k is

    bobman , in New rule will cut federal money to college programs that leave grads with high debt, low pay

    Why are we giving money to colleges at all when they maximize profit off of tuition?

    phoneymouse ,

    Tuition is in part a factor of access to student loans. You think tuition would be that high if loans wouldn’t cover it?

    tallwookie , in It’s Definitive – The Gulf Stream Is Weakening

    if it’s slowing by ~1%/decade, how many decades will it take to have a significant impact that the everyday person would notice?

    CosmicSploogeDrizzle ,
    @CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

    You are assuming a linear progression. Climate effects are likely accelerating.

    tallwookie , in Jimmy Carter's 99th birthday celebration moved to Saturday to avoid federal shutdown threat

    wow, I had no idea he was still alive.

    mosiacmango ,

    He went into hospice care 8 months ago, and is still here kickin.

    Apprently his family, a stunning amount of letters and well wishers, and peanut butter ice cream have kept him upbeat and vibrant.

    Hanabie ,
    @Hanabie@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Why hospice, is he terminally ill?

    mosiacmango ,

    There are articles out there, but as I recall it’s just generally “you’re 99” medical care he’s declining.

    He wanted to live out the rest of his life naturally, and it seems to be working.

    EDIT: Heres one. Basically, they dont clarify what the issue may be, but after 8 months with no treatment and hes still going, i dont think its anything specific.

    JJROKCZ ,

    He’s 99 years old

    JustAManOnAToilet ,

    I’ve never had peanut butter ice cream, but with the clear benefits I’m willing to endure trying some.

    XbSuper ,

    Endure what? One of the most delicious things you’ll ever eat? Unless you’re allergic to peanuts, you should go get some immediately.

    ZeroCool , in Jimmy Carter's 99th birthday celebration moved to Saturday to avoid federal shutdown threat

    Republicans just stole my dude Jimmy’s birthday. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
