eatCasserole , in Disney attempts to use Disney+ Terms of Service to repel a wrongful death lawsuit involving a death in one of their parks

I really want there to be a legal precedent for all these stupid terms of service things being invalid because we all know no one reads them and you can’t realistically function in contemporary society without clicking those “agree” buttons from time to time.

*Although this case is not that, because disney’s claim is insane for other reasons.

I thought there already at least kind of was, but then I also heard that a GOP judge shot down the precedent that the arbitration clauses don’t mean shit, but then I heard another ruling that said it doesn’t apply in the context of NDAs. At this point it’s probably kind of a legal grey area as fucked up as it is.

UnderpantsWeevil , in Columbia University president Minouche Shafik resigns in wake of Gaza protests
@UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world avatar

In her email, Shafik said she would be accepting a role with the UK’s foreign secretary, “to chair a review of the government’s approach to international development”.

These assholes only seen to fall upwards

Shafik authorized New York police to move on to campus and break up the encampments, claiming they “pose a clear and present danger to the substantial functioning of the university”. Forty-six students were arrested and, after students continued their occupation, many more were suspended. Media were prohibited from entering campus to cover the arrests.

Excited to see this kind of energy transferred to the UK’s foreign policy and their attitude towards migrants.

Going from university president to chair a government review committee is not a promotion. Or even a lateral move.

UnderpantsWeevil ,
@UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world avatar

Who do you think has more influence over policy? A school administrator or a ministry chairperson?

FlowVoid ,

A university president has more influence than a committee chair.

UnderpantsWeevil ,
@UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world avatar

What international foreign policy does the President of Columbia set?

FlowVoid ,

The chair of a review committee does not set policy. They simply get a voice in the committee that sends reports that might be read by the people who set policy.

And influence is not measured solely by committee assignments. Otherwise, Elon Musk would lack any influence.

UnderpantsWeevil ,
@UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world avatar

The chair of a review committee does not set policy.

You are mistaken.

They simply get a voice in the committee that sends reports that might be read by the people who set policy.

They author the policies that the MPs vote on. Show me a piece of legislation passing through Parliament or an executive level policy decision, and I’ll show you the committee that penned it. The Cass Report is a great example.

And influence is not measured solely by committee assignments.

Sure. There’s also money. Guess which job puts you in a better position to take bribes?

FlowVoid ,

They author the policies

If the chair gets to write policy, what do the other committee members do?

I’ll show you the committee that penned it

“All legislation passed through a committee” does not mean “All committee output becomes legislation”.

UnderpantsWeevil ,
@UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world avatar

If the chair gets to write policy, what do the other committee members do?

Also write the policies. These documents are enormous and require extensive research to compose correctly.

“All legislation passed through a committee” does not mean “All committee output becomes legislation”.

What percentage of legislation does a college president write?

FlowVoid ,

The same as the percentage of legislation that Elon Musk writes.

Influence is more than an opportunity to write legislation. And no, she isn’t going to earn more in “bribes” than the $5 million/yr she earned as university president. Nor will she be provided a 10,000 sqft apartment in Manhattan.

UnderpantsWeevil ,
@UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world avatar

The same as the percentage of legislation that Elon Musk writes.

What legislation has Musk authored recently?

FlowVoid , (edited )

None. He pays lobbyists to author it. And then pays PACs to get it enacted. Doesn’t even have to restrict himself to international relations or just one country. Do you really think he had no role in multiple national incentives for EV buyers?

And on top of that, he can directly influence the media via Twitter, the space industry via SpaceX, the automotive industry via Tesla, and any Republican politician via a phone call. A mere committee chair would be jealous, some of them can’t even win over the rest of their committee.

“Redundancies” is apparently now a noun that refers to employees being laid off.

Headcount is now a physical asset I guess. Corps must be taking depreciation expenses on employees now in addition to salary expenses. Ka-ching!

After my first browse of the article I was wondering if it had been spewed out by some of the crappy AI that Cisco is so keen on.

See a lot of people claim it as a reason for apathy, but it’s worth remembering there’s still a lot of potentially winnable fights even in gerrymandered districts

  • maine and nebraska are exceptions for presidential races due to splitting some of their electoral votes
grue ,

We need to do more. Much more. Trump and his followers are intending to use every means at their disposal, up to and including violence, to achieve a dictatorship. They have already subverted SCOTUS and are moving themselves into position to massively interfere with the election itself. Why the fuck are we still talking like just voting and business-as-usual campaigning is anywhere near enough to counter that?

Consider the recommendations of this article, for instance (which, frankly, are even themselves toned down compared to what is actually necessary):

Still, pro-democracy Americans need to be organized en masse as part of a larger project of corporeal politics that will involve massive non-violent protests, nationwide strikes, and other disruptions to the country’s day-to-day routine if Trump and the MAGA Republicans take power in 2025. Pro-democracy civil society organizations must focus their attention on the ongoing coup and widespread right-wing attacks on American democracy and leverage their particular resources and networks to stop it.

Viewers, listeners, readers, and especially subscribers need to embark upon a public pressure and boycotting campaign if the mainstream news media—and especially the elite agenda-setting news media such as the New York Times and Washington Post—continue with their Trump-MAGA enabling agenda.

The Republican Party has been fully MAGAfied and needs to be torn down and rebuilt (or outright replaced) in a way that is consistent with basic democratic principles such as respect for the rule of law and civil society.

In his essay at the New Republic, Rothkopf gives these marching orders to his fellow pro-democracy Americans:

The Democracy Future Project’s exercises can’t tell us whether the descent into authoritarianism will be fast or slow if Trump wins. Most likely, it will involve a combination of highly visible steps and subtler, possibly even more dangerous changes far from view. But the exercises make it clear that should Trump win in November, there is every reason to expect the worst. And that’s why there is also every reason to prepare for the worst case. If those who care about democracy start coordinating now to shore up democracy’s defenses, we’ll have a fighting chance of slowing or preventing Trump’s most egregious plans should he regain the White House.

NocturnalMorning ,

Honestly, the second people caught wind of what amounts to a literal second coup attempt, they should have been arrested. But since it’s funded by billionaires, people are looking the other way.

grue ,

And that, in and of itself, ought to have justified a march on Washington of millions of non-billionaires.

Last year I seeded it with a mix of Buffalo Grass, Curly Mesquite Grass, and Blue Gamma. It’s almost taken over. It uses zero water, I only mowed it once the year before and twice this year because we got a boatload of rain this year unlike the year before. I stopped mowing the backyard and just removed all the wax and China berry shoots. I have all sorts of native flowers and Chili Pequin plants all over the place. The flowers are great and the birds are everywhere. Best decision I have made since I got this place.

Can we just pass a law or act that allows a person to discharge any debt they deem fraudulent? Like if it is known the person had their data leaked and they are signed up for something sketchy we should be able to legally and for free dispute that account/charge/service and have it stricken from our life. To prevent someone from just taking advantage of it though it should also automatically change your SSN or other personal ID number and freeze other accounts that are legit until they are paid in full. Most people would need to use this service at most once in their lifetime.

This is already the case, it’s not a law, but contracts. You’re not in fact a party to the agreement, so you’re not beholden to the terms.

I’ve watched a lot of religious arguments and debates and, let me tell you, the religious have no problem whatsoever with lying. The God stuff is just used to control the masses and the useful idiots. No one in the upper echelons, including those of the Vatican, believes any of that. If they did, they would out and shame pedophiles with extreme prejudice. The God delusion is used to attain and maintain power and access to resources. Nothing more.

Edit: I understand some people earnestly need their faith, so that’s why I think religion should just be a private thing. But religion and religious belief of any kind needs to removed from serious public discourse and policymaking. Enough is enough.

I think the counterargument here is that hurting people is bad, even when they’ve done harm,

but even that falls pretty short, because it’s not just that the upper echelons of the Catholic Church aren’t “outing and shaming” them, but also that the system is literally protecting them.

bitjunkie , in Google pulls the plug on uBlock Origin, leaving over 30 million Chrome users susceptible to intrusive ads

Next week: Over 30 million users pull the plug on Chrome, leaving Google execs to make the surprised Pikachu face and wonder aloud why millennials hate web browsers.

snailfact ,

Normal people are too lazy to care they are just going to get another ad blocking extension, even if it’s not as good as ublock.

thawed_caveman ,

Yeah, it takes some mental effort to change your habits, people are more likely to just install a new extension.

BUT, those extensions are probably next, dropping uBlock is part of a long-standing war by Google against ad blocking of all kinds. So at some point Chrome users won’t be able to escape ads, and then i do wonder if they’ll switch.

I feel like normal people who are too lazy to care would probably just use the default browser that came with their device. It will be Chrome if it’s an Android, but it will be everything but Chrome if it’s any other OS, it will be Edge or Safari.

Now i haven’t installed Chrome in a minute, but how many devices is it the default for? My understanding is that a lot of Chrome users specifically looked for it and installed it to use instead of the default, especially Windows users. And for that public, i do think it matters, i do think they would consider switching.

stoly ,

The sort of person who would sit through a Youtube ad or is still on Reddit won’t change. They’ll just get angry or perhaps not even notice.

InternetUser2012 ,

That type of person didn’t use ublock to begin with. Anyone that did is going to be a Firefox user today.

Even if only a fraction of those kinds of users switch, that’s still millions of users chrome loses, and no longer get to make a buck off of.

Doesn’t have to. I’m quite content with google’s profits getting hurt even if it is a little bit.
