masquenox , in Student Protest Leader at Columbia: ‘Zionists Don’t Deserve to Live’

Fuck Zionism.

dhork , in Every billionaire under the age of 30 inherited their fortune, new report finds

Bullshit. They can only say this because the guy who invented Ethereum just turned 30, and there are probably all sorts of other Crypto nerds who are worth that much but we’ll never know it.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

So you’re saying these crypto nerds don’t pay taxes?

dhork ,

Crypto is a capital asset in the US, so they don’t owe the taxes until they sell. And many of them don’t live in the US, on purpose. They figured out where they can go and buy citizenship so their tax burden is much lower.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

So you’re saying crypto is not worth anything until you sell it? Sounds like they aren’t billionaires except on paper.

catloaf ,

That’s typically what it means, yes. Having large amounts of cash is generally a bad idea, because over time inflation makes it worth less.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Assets other than cash have value. Land, for example.

dhork ,

Yup, same as TSLA

That seems like the norm actually, and not the exception.

TheDudeV2 , in Trump will dismantle key US weather and science agency, climate experts fear

Michael Lewis wrote an interesting book on this, published as an audio-book in 2018, called The Coming Storm (www.goodreads.com/…/41016100-the-coming-storm). It’s well worth the listen:

In his first Audible Original feature, New York Times best-selling author and journalist Michael Lewis delivers hard-hitting research on not-so-random weather data — and how Washington plans to release it. He also digs deep into the lives of two scientists who revolutionized climate predictions, bringing warning systems to previously unimaginable levels of accuracy. One is Kathy Sullivan, a gifted scientist among the first women in space; the other, D.J. Patil, is a trickster-turned-mathematician and a political adviser.

Most urgently, Lewis’s narrative reveals the potential cost of putting a price tag on information with the potential to save lives, raising questions about balancing public service with profits in an ethically-ambiguous atmosphere.

Wtf does a rich asshole have to do with college students being arrested like it’s Kent State in 1970 all over again?

stembolts , (edited )

.

aniki ,

Why are they being arrested?

pearsaltchocolatebar ,

Because the city banned camping so they can arrest protestors.

aniki ,

What were the protestors protesting?

girlfreddy ,
@girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

An easy block here.

aniki ,

I don’t give a flying fuck.

Belastend ,

The israeli genocide :)

ccunning ,

Worth noting it’s called the “Kent State Massacre” because the students weren’t just arrested.

Sadly it won’t be surprising if things escalate to that point but thankfully we aren’t there now…

hamsammy ,

If I’m understanding what you’re not flat out saying, I think we need a reminder that: Jews ≠ Israel.

aniki ,

You should remind the police that.

TropicalDingdong ,

You can pick a better source on that one. Citing Yeezy isn’t a way to build credibility.

Belastend ,

Oh man, why did they dogpile on the guy who loves the genocidal mustache man, only to go out and protest against genocide??? Why cant they hate jewwwwwws like meeeeee.

Obonga , in Bill to allow arming Tennessee teachers with guns heads to the governor's desk

Then again, giving guns or taking guns away, both are really more easy than real solutions.

Hey NC, Remember when Pat McCory banned counties from raising the minimum wage and literally said it was because he didn’t want foreigners moving in who might be “Attracted to higher standards of living”

muntedcrocodile , in Trump denies the affairs at the heart of the hush-money case. Almost no one believes him.
@muntedcrocodile@lemm.ee avatar

I’m still confused as to what’s illegal about paying hush money?

CooperHawkes ,

He’s not really being charged with hush money but how he gave the hush money. In simplistic terms he laundered money to not make it seem like he paid off a porn star. That’s what is illegal.

muntedcrocodile ,

johannesvanderwhales ,

ChairmanMeow ,
@ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

Paying hush money is allowed. Laundering money to conceal that you’re paying hush money, violating campaign laws in the process, is not allowed.

MagicShel ,

Concealing information for the express purpose of changing the outcome of an election is a crime. It’s always the coverup that gets you. Ever notice how Trump was able to get away with constant crime all this time? It’s because it was blatant and done in front of everyone. Just like soliciting Russia to hack Hillary: if he’d done it in secret he’d have been charged, but he did it in front of the nation with cameras on which gave him plausible deniability that what was in his heart was a crime and not a little jokey-poo.

This time he tried to cover it up, creating a trail of paper and witness to prove that he knew what he was doing was illegal.

johannesvanderwhales ,

Well and he also shat all over a guy with direct knowledge of the scheme, which was a bit unwise.

www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-36206897

President Barack Obama has sipped a glass of filtered water on a visit to the Michigan city of Flint, which has been wracked by a public health crisis. He took a drink of the city’s filtered water to “show it was safe”.

This is why i tell people that all major elected politicians are inhuman creatures, no matter what party they belong to or how they portray themselves. They will eat you alive if you give them your trust.

Also, I bet Obama’s people told him it was all good. His degree is in constitutional law, not chemistry.

masquenox , in Exclusive: China harbors ship tied to North Korea-Russia arms transfers, satellite images show

And since when does China have to follow the US’s rules?

InquisitiveApathy , in Net neutrality rules restored by US agency, reversing Trump

I’m glad for the win, but until this is something that’s formally legislated by Congress we’re just going to be ping-ponging back and forth depending on which party has majority control of the FCC. What we really need are Congresspersons who are savvy enough to understand and address modern tech problems effectively.
