All the Dems I know, which is just about every person I know, don’t’t have a problem with it.

NoSuchAgency , in Biden Uses Trump 'Muslim Ban' Maneuver to Cap Asylum Seekers

Misguided headline…It wasn’t a Muslim ban. It was a ban on terrorist hotspots

gAlienLifeform ,
@gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world avatar

*After the first two Muslim bans were too blatantly racist for even that Supreme Court, they came up with just enough bullshit to cover their racism to get the third Muslim ban attempt to stick

NoIWontPickAName ,

He called it a Muslim ban

IndustryStandard OP ,

Trump called it Muslim ban. Trump used code 212f to force it through, which Biden is using right now.

What Trump did turned out to be illegal and got reversed. What Biden is doing right now is likely illegal as well.

disguy_ovahea , in Biden signs executive order dramatically tightening border

I see a lot of criticism about border restrictions. I’m curious which option people think is best.

A President cannot reform immigration policy or increase the budget.

Biden’s options are turn away at the border, detain, or do nothing and allow migrants to be homeless in overcrowded sanctuary cities.

Which is the right choice?

bamboo ,

This is a false dichotomy. While it’s true that the president cannot massively reform immigration policy or adjust the budget unilaterally, they do have a lot of sway in how to handle the situation by setting the priorities of federal agencies and working with aligned NGOs. Instead of restricting immigration, why not work with cooperative state and local governments, as well as NGOs to make resources more available to those who need it? He could also direct agencies like CBP and ICE to stop wasting their money detaining people and ruining lives, and instead focus on helping those not in compliance go through the legal process instead, and provide personnel support to aid those crossing the border using their existing logistical resources.

Just limiting immigration altogether is the lazy approach and helps no one.

disguy_ovahea ,

With what housing? Your suggestions are missing the most important part of the problem. There’s no housing budget left in sanctuary cities. They’re at capacity. He can’t support the cities financially, not can he mandate other cities participate in being sanctuary cities. That’s all congressional immigration policy, and they failed to do their job.

He could offer them housing in a detention center. That’s within his power.

“… what are we creating now that will still be valued and discussed hundreds or thousands of years from today?”

Well, there’s very little chance of memorable art to come into existence if artists are not paid fairly. Art takes time and effort, even for geniuses. If someone’s worried about becoming homeless or whatever, they’re not going to focus on their craft at the expense of health and safety, and even if they do what they produce will be suboptimal or unfocused.

So what’s the fair value of such things? I suppose there’s a number of ways to determine that, but it doesn’t matter if the platform that’s hosting an artist is not acting in good faith nor practicing fairness. Really, there should be an open source version of Spotify.

_number8_ , in Fauci says ‘unusual’ antics by Marjorie Taylor Greene is reason he gets death threats

to be fair the pandemic handling did fucking suck and ruin lives. there were stories about how people couldn’t say goodbye to dying relatives because of “distancing rules” (which the Washington Post confirmed were basically picked out of thin air, which is just blatantly inhumane and obviously careless. you’re not building public trust or respect with rules like that. i’d happily get covid if i could say goodbye to my mom before she dies, fuck you.

Nurse_Robot ,

You win the “worlds most dangerously selfish and unempathetic” person award.

_number8_ ,

lmao it’s unempathetic to say people should be able to say goodbye to loved ones. covid was spreading everywhere anyway! if that hugely meaningful interaction didn’t get them infected, work or school or the gas station or a hotel or a restaurant would the next day anyway.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

“Millions of people were dying anyway, so I should have been able to say goodbye to my third cousin Phil in person instead of via video chat!”

People with your attitude are why millions died needlessly. Yes, you’re unempathetic.

Hey sorry it’s off topic but how do you “tag” people? I’ve seen a few people say this and can’t figure it out, I’m guessing it’s my app’s fault.

I would also like to know how to tag this guy as dumb as a rock

magi , (edited )

The handling of the pandemic was terrible and was a play on the lives of hundreds of millions that we’re still recovering from today. No point arguing with the basement dwellers of Lemmy, because that’s where they were. I’m no denier or whatever from any stretch of the imagination, but god damn, thinking this was handled appropriately is a very unpopular opinion in the real world.
