journals.sagepub.com/doi/…/08903344231170559Peer-Reviewed analysis of the nutritional content in a transgender woman’s breast milk. The nutrients in her breast milk were found to be better than reference levels in every category. This is consistent with the literature on the nutritional contents of breast milk from inducing lactation in cis women (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25288606/). Lactation has even been observed in cisgender men, and the nutritional contents of male milk is within reference levels for normal lactating cis women (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7462406/)

This is the first I have heard of transwomen breastfeeding.

Sounds incredibly complicated vs having a wet nurse/milk doner

Arotrios , in Biden's election war chest trails Trump's in size, filings show
@Arotrios@kbin.social avatar

The article is a bit misleading as it's only comparing presidential campaign amounts, and Biden is only $2 million behind Trump ($20mil to $22mil), but combined with the Democratic Party accounts, he's at $77 million. Trump still has to face a contested primary, Biden is unlikely to face any serious challengers.

What's more interesting to me is that Trump has pulled in less than half of what he had at this point in the election cycle last time around ($56mil). This clearly indicates that the major GOP donors have pulled their support, at least until he wins the primary. While it's unlikely that money will flow to Democrats, I think it indicates a willingness on their part to sit out this cycle until the GOP gets its finances in order. No one likes being ripped off.

zombuey OP ,

very good insight. I am not sure that the article is misleading as much as its just stating the facts without speculating further.

AnonTwo , in How America fell out of love with ice cream

While I have no basis for this

I think the reason Ice Cream fell out of favor is because it's a "Normal sugary sweet".

It's easy to eliminate.

Meanwhile, sugar has increased in just about everything else we eat.

cassetti ,

Meanwhile, sugar has increased in just about everything else we eat.

I think you mean FAKE sugar. Holy hell is it everywhere. And it's so damn sweet.

I actually enjoy having a sodastream just so I can still buy the occasional energy drink or soda, and add some extra carbonated water to tone down the sweetness.

You know how much I'd love to see a coca-cola with "low cane sugar" as an option? Just give me cane sugar....... but less of it!!

I really wish instead of switching from real sugar to artificial sweetener, companies would simply use less sugar. But no, artificial sweetener is CHEAPER than real sugar, and makes the item taste sweeter, so it's a win-win, right?

RockyBockySocky ,

It's not fake sugar lol, it exists.

It's added sugar

cassetti ,

Go to a supermarket, look around at how many candies and sodas now use artificial sweetener instead of plain sugar. It's certainly on the increase over the past 20 years if you look back historically at it's usage, and it seems to be increasing annually.

Look at how Pepsi phased out Sierra Mist in favor of the new "Starry" soda which is made with more artificial sweetener. This lets them advertise lower calories on the label, while selling a sweeter beverage people will buy.

I used to love buying malted beverages and energy drinks occasionally because I enjoy trying new flavors. However over the past five+ years, I've noticed a lot more brands sneaking in artificial sweeteners. Look at Mountain Dew - they recently started a line of alcohol-infused beverages which interested me. But go figure they were absolutely terrible - they tasted nothing like classic mountain dew with al that fake sugar. I threw them out lol.

RockyBockySocky ,

Ah I misunderstood, yeah there's artificial sweeteners and alternate sugars, I don't believe they're all inherently bad from what I've seen.
And yeah some people really taste the difference lol

ArugulaZ , in How America fell out of love with ice cream

I used to like ice cream, but diabetes put a screeching halt to that. I've tried the healthier alternatives, but they're horrible. Keto ice cream is just the worst.

DreamyDolphin ,
@DreamyDolphin@kbin.social avatar

Actually, one bizarre research finding is that, "among diabetics, eating half a cup of ice cream a day is associated with a lower risk of heart problems".

No one's quite sure why or how or whether it's some sort of odd correlation (but it does seem to resist all attempts to p-hack it out of significance), and there's not much appetite among researchers to look too closely into it because everyone knows that ice cream is bad for you.

Coreidan ,

When you break it down all ice cream is is frozen milk. Things like heavy cream help stabilize it. Sugar/chocolate/vanilla is most commonly added to make it taste more interesting.

If you’re a diabetic you could cut out the sugar and add alternatives. Make your own ice cream it’s super easy.

tatertime ,

Literally the only keto ice cream i can eat is the Mint Chip by Rebel. Every other brand or flavor tastes horrible. My husband doesn’t like any of them either, not even mint chip. I have tried probably 3 brands and 10 flavors across the keto ice cream universe. I have some serious trust issues with the keto community recommending absolutely horrible keto versions of food saying it “tastes justlike regular x!” And it is nowhere close. Ever. It did get me to just give up and eat better overall lol.

Mongostein , in How a Vast Demographic Shift Will Reshape the World

Maybe if the world weren’t going to shit people would want to have kids

partial_accumen ,

Interestingly, the richer a country gets, the fewer kids it gives birth to. When there’s a good chance you’re going to lose 3 to 4 children before they reach adulthood to hunger, war, disease, or general violence you hedge your bets by having 5-12 kids. Also historically, you need more kids to work your land/trade to support the family.

In an advanced economy you don’t need to have kids for either one of those reasons. Further, life is pretty good without raising kids so yet another group decide not to become parents. The big drop of fertility rate in the US happened in the early 70s likely before most people reading and posting here were born.

Its not all that kids are too expensive to raise in modern economies. Its partly sure, but not even the largest part.

Mongostein ,

I’m not even talking about cost. I’m talking about the fact that the world is literally burning down around us. We had 50 years warning and we did nothing meaningful about it. I’m not raising a kid just so he can be forced to go fight in the water wars of 2050.

partial_accumen ,

At least in the USA, the various world crises in the 1960s were quite a bit worse for the prospects of your new born children. We just had the Cuban Missile Crisis where we got closer to global thermal nuclear war than ever in history. The war was raging in Vietnam where young men were dying. The Soviet Union was flexing its power in Eastern Europe where they had just rolled tanks into Czechoslovakia. China had detonated their first Hydrogen bomb.

Frankly it looked pretty bleak then where there was a chance you and your entire family would die in nuclear hellfire potentially any day.

Ragnell ,
@Ragnell@kbin.social avatar

Not to mention kids require an investment of time and care that a lot of people just don't want to make. Given the actual ability to not have kids, some couples choose not to. And it's good that they don't have to, I mean, how many shitty, abusive parents were there in the past before birth control? People in rich countries are making the mature choice not to have children. People in poor countries would also make that choice, if they had the same access to reproductive care.

AToM_exe , in People with alcohol use disorder impaired after heavy drinking, despite claims of higher tolerance

I’m too drunk to read thought this… Where’s summarize bot?

itsdavetho ,

tldr they found in their study that alcoholics/people with AUD can drink 50% more (7-8 drinks) and be twice as intoxicated , as compared to standard drinkers and alcoholics at 4-5 drinks, where the alcoholics were comparatively much less intoxicated than ‘standard drinkers’ (I think this implies that alcoholics do have a tolerance to alcohol but tolerance is not linear)

Not ground breaking stuff imo

GunnarRunnar ,

So the headline is lying? Curious.

itsdavetho ,

No, perhaps I’ve poorly explained it. The article’s not a very long read though.

SheeEttin ,

When they drank alcohol in our study at a dose similar to their usual drinking pattern, we saw significant impairments on both the fine motor and cognitive tests that was even more impairment than a light drinker gets at the intoxicating dose.

So at the “standard” drunk level of 4 drinks, alcoholics are less impaired, but when alcoholics drink more than that they are more impaired than a “normal” drunk person.

So alcoholics can have a higher tolerance for base consumption, but when they pass that they go straight to trashed.

acunasdaddy ,

That’s not quite right. Alcoholics do tolerate lower level of alcohol (4 drinks) than normal people. But once they get to 8 (which they do - remember these are alcoholics) they don’t get more drink than a normal drink person but they are more than twice as drunk as before and they are less drunk than they really are.

SheeEttin ,

they are more than twice as drunk as before and they are less drunk than they really are

I can’t make any sense of this part.

acunasdaddy ,

Sorry that wasn’t very well written.

The point is that alcoholics are not MORE drunk than non alcoholics on 8 drinks. They are just as hammered (but not more) than non alcoholics. The problem is that they THINK they are not as drunk while a nonalcoholic may recognize their impairment

An_Ugly_Bastard , in A functional cure for diabetes is now available in the US
