Kyrgizion , in Officer Demoted After Writing Traffic Tickets Gets $175,000 Settlement

He better watch his back. Wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if he was suddenly and unexpectedly taken out by a “random” perp…

homesweethomeMrL , in More than 30 bomb threats made in Springfield, Ohio, after false pets claims

“False claims”!! They’re not even talking about a single person! There’s zero chance they’ll be sued and they STILL can’t say “Lie”!

Pathetic!

Crypto is just like his steaks. Someone said he’s get a check if he put his name on it. So that’s what he’s doing.

Mcdolan , (edited ) in Hezbollah members wounded in Lebanon when pagers explode

~~This is nuts, from a vid I saw it was an actual explosion. The fact that so many “terrorists” were given devices with explosives in them and it was undetected until they blew…

I don’t care if it’s for the greater good, any entity that has the ability to pull this off should be dismantled and charged with crimes against humanity. This can’t be a thing humanity just accepts as a possibility. Yeah terrorism is bad but this is fucked if true.~~

Edit: if this video isn’t completely made up it looks like those batteries can explode. I was under the impression they would shoot flames well before any explosion, might not be the case. Quite curious on the exploit though. What conductor do they have in there that wouldn’t burn out like a fuse before the explosion.

Here’s a video of one of them exploding.

youtu.be/h4McyQ8YAQI?si=GbSXpCzqH-9GKAPa

One of the deaths I read was due to ammunition in their pocket and another due to them crashing their car after it exploded. Seems 8 dead, almost 3,000 injured from Lebanon to Syria and one in Qatar.

Mcdolan , (edited )

Right, do lithium batteries exploded like that? Burst into flames sure, but explode with no apparent fire?

Edit: apparently they can. I’m completely off base. www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDaPP-dI9dE

OccamsRazer ,

Uhh… Terrorism where innocent citizens are targeted is worse than specific targeting of terrorists themselves.

Thank you for saying this, I was a little taken back by what in my opinion seemed to be comments expressing sympathy for Hezbollah.

He was part of a panel this weekend at the MIT Museum. It was interesting to hear how widespread this problem of poor record keeping is for births and deaths. Up until quite recently (like the 1960’s for the US), many places were, and some still are, terrible about it. That didn’t even include things like China’s former one child policy.

It’s not just a curiosity that some people don’t actually know how old they really are. It has real effects. When you’re trying to make health care or retirement benefit decisions for a whole country, having bad population data is a serious concern. Life insurance actuaries probably treat out their hair over this sort of issue, too

Snapz , in Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week

Emboldened oligarch in a plutocracy.

But also kleptocracy and really a kakistocracy disguised outwardly as an aristocracy or neo-monarchy as Raskin said.

Outside of just saying “America” or “Capitalism” How do we combine all of this into one satisfying, effective term?

Gradually_Adjusting ,
@Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world avatar

I like the term neofeudalism.

Snapz , in Disney trips meant for homeless students went to NYC school employees' kids, officials say

According to the report released this month, Linda Wilson, the Queens regional manager for the office that supports students in temporary housing, took her own children on trips that were paid for through grants for homeless students and encouraged employees she supervised to do the same but to keep quiet about it. “What happens here stays with us,” one staffer quoted Wilson as saying. Contacted by the New York Post, Wilson denied bringing her two daughters on trips or encouraging staff members to bring their children. Wilson called the special commissioner’s probe “a witch hunt.”

Queens. The same place that gave the world donald trump.

I haven’t been, but Queens sounds like America’s festering asshole, with little demons crawling out of it? Can anyone with first hand experiences there elaborate?

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

My mom is also from Queens. Rockaway Beach to be specific. A plane crashed into her old neighborhood in 2001 (no, not 9/11) and destroyed it.

en.wikipedia.org/…/American_Airlines_Flight_587

Queens is really big. 108.1 mi² according to Google. There is a lot of bad and there is a lot of good about Queens.

One thing I liked is that there is a long history of shooting films there going back to the 1920s and there’s still a studio there. Inside is also the Museum of the Moving Image. I never got a chance to go any of the times I went to New York:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaufman_Astoria_Studios

There’s also Flushing Meadows, which is a great park. It’s where the 1939 World’s Fair was held.

en.wikipedia.org/…/Flushing_Meadows–Corona_Park

And, of course, even though her neighborhood is gone, the beach is still there.

azimir , in Suspicious packages sent to election officials in at least 6 states

This voting season has a very different feel from 2020. I’ve been trying to understand what’s up.

Because there’s not the same kind of public displays of right wing movements, I feel that it seems like a safer situation on a large scale. The tradeoff is that the right wing nutjobs don’t have the same public visible groups to join and yell about life with. They’re likely going to be much more likely to lash out through terroristic acts and to be more individually violent.

So, while there’s not nearly the same quantity of truck convoys of deplorables driving around waving flags, that same energy is going to be distilled into a more potent sludge of evil under the surface.

Dkarma ,

The huge diff will be in person voting. I don’t think there will be the confusion and delays we saw due to mail in voting in 2020 this time which will blunt a lot of Republican fuckery because states will call it that night instead of a week later.

Krauerking , in NYPD shot four people - including two bystanders one who is in critical condition - and another cop over a $2.90 fare.

Can we just go back to having a legitimate conductor who also has a protected union job that is properly staffed so that they can do occasional walks through the train to be able to offer ticketing services that allow for rapid and mass transit for the masses that connect us in a way that allows for fucking easy travel.

Please! Or can we at least stop treating trains like an old existing extension of the singularly for profit monopolies paid by the government they were and just straight up have been allowed to become again!
