Samvega , in New University Rules Crack Down on Gaza Protests: Dozens of campuses quietly implemented new “expressive activity” policies over the summer—effectively banning many forms of protest

“We can’t have people saying that killing the innocent is bad. That’s a controversial position.”

damn those intelligent people and their radical beliefs. Everyone knows you should look to facebook for real knowledge!

Notyou , in Calls for J.D. Vance to resign after he admits that he created pet-eating story about immigrants

Any lawyers calling the schools parents and trying to to get a class action civil suit against them? I think all the families having to suffer because of the admitted lies, should be a good payout for some lawyers willing to do the leg work.

phoenixz , in NYPD shot four people - including two bystanders one who is in critical condition - and another cop over a $2.90 fare.

This obviously has in part to do with the toxic American gun culture and it’s corrupt and untrained police, but alsonwoth it’s misguided need for what it thinks is justice, and revenge for real or imagined crimes.

Shoplift something small? In you go with hardened criminals to punish punish punish, fuck you for daring to do that! No rehabilitation, just punish

A lot of Americans complain about low prison sentences in Europe, not understanding that the focus there is on actually solving the problem of crime, instead of revenge, revenge, revenge.

UnderpantsWeevil OP ,
@UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world avatar

The problem is rooted in prison spending moving from a social cost to a private revenue stream.

It’s the classic Cobra Effect of economics. Monetizing the solution to a problem creates an incentive to increase the instances of said problem.

In this case, we have criminalized the free use of public transportation in order to justify more spending on policing.

Phoenicianpirate ,

The same thing in Canada. Despite the reputation of Canadians being polite wusses by Americans the Canadian legal system is much harsher than the American system.

frezik ,

It makes more sense if you start from the premise that there are “good people” and “bad people”, and bad people need to be punished to protect good people. The people who do the protections–like Joe Arpaio–can do no wrong. Even if they seem to do bad things, that’s just in the service of protecting good people.

This premise is bullshit, but everything follows from there.

voracitude , in New details of Trump family crypto project released, including who can buy in

World Liberty has not officially unveiled its plans for a cryptocurrency, but the white paper reviewed by CoinDesk suggested that the project will eventually sell a governance token called WLFI.

According to the document, the Ethereum-based WLFI token will be non-transferable, meaning it won’t be possible to trade on the blockchain, but holders will be able to use it to vote on changes to World Liberty’s development roadmap.

(coindesk.com/…/trumps-crypto-gambit-what-we-know-…)

So you buy it, and then you can’t sell it. A+, because anyone who’s gonna buy this is going to see “Ethereum-based” and assume the opposite. I wonder if this will be the wakeup call 🤔

… Who am I kidding, MAGAts can’t wake up. The shock would kill them, at this point.

Organichedgehog , in Conservative editor backtracks after seeming to use n word regarding Haitian migrants

Gonna invoke the hivemind rage and say that, upon listening w headphones, it does kinda sound like he’s saying “migr -” with a short “i” sound.

Now queue the downvotes, calling me racist, dumb, etc.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, I often say “mihgr-” instead of “migrants” and then cut myself off. Plausible.

Organichedgehog ,

I think you’re hearing what you want to hear and getting a hit of the righteous outrage. Misspeaking is a thing, dude. You say “plausible” sarcastically, as if it weren’t actually 100% plausible lol

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Sounds like everyone here is “hearing what they want to hear” except you. What does that suggest to you?

Organichedgehog ,

ripcord ,

You can also claim anything you want if you simply dismiss everything you don’t agree with as biased and worthless, which you appear to be doing here.

Organichedgehog ,

Yes, you’re definitely the objective one here lol

catloaf ,

Yeah, I’m not 100% convinced either. It doesn’t sound like he used the n-word, nor that he caught himself halfway through saying it. People screw up speaking all the time, and on rare occasions it can sound like something offensive.

ripcord ,
@ripcord@lemmy.world avatar

No. I assumed it was actually something like thag. Then listened to it a bunch of times. I don’t find that plausible at all.

Eezyville ,
@Eezyville@sh.itjust.works avatar

Your headphones suck because he definitely lead with the “n” and not the “m”. I know the difference in sound between n and m and it was an n. In fact around the 0:35 mark he said, “complaining about Haitian nigge-mngr-migrants”. I don’t know how to spell him correcting himself.

lennybird , (edited ) in Secret Service: Suspect in apparent assassination attempt did not have a line of sight on Trump, never fired his weapon
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

I’m seeing a lot of shitheads paint this guy as a leftist Democrat. No. Tell them, “if he’s a left-wing Democrat, then so is Dick Cheney.” Absurd.

This guy:

  • Voted Republican in 2008
  • Voted Republican in 2012
  • Voted Trump in 2016

The primary reason, as he detailed in his own self-published book, for leaving Trump and beginning to support Democratic candidates was his disastrous anti-Ukrainian policy. Once that occurred [the broader veil of bullshit became unmasked — see this archived tweet — and he became pissed off that he was grifted. Yet in January of this year he was still pushing for Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy— bleeding heart liberals? — to unite and defeat Trump in the the GOP Primaries.

It doesn’t change that he’s still a conservative Republican.

Well if Israel says that then it must be safe for him. …Right?

oberstoffensichtlich ,

Israel has honored similar deals in the past.

Sundial ,

Given the events of the past 8 months would you say Netanyahu, and by extension the Israeli government, have been negotiating in good faith and actively trying to end the war?

oberstoffensichtlich ,
@oberstoffensichtlich@feddit.org avatar

There has been one temporary ceasefire with hostage releases. Also remember the recent ceasefire for vaccinations. There are a string of other events that happened because of successful diplomacy.

Israel’s message to Hamas since the beginning of the war has more or less been: surrender or die.

Netanyahu never does anything in good faith. He is all about his personal advantage.

Sundial ,

There has been one temporary ceasefire with hostage releases.

And there have also been instances of Netanyahu sabotaging getting hostages released as well.

Also remember the recent ceasefire for vaccinations.

You mean for polio right? The disease that started spreading because of Israel’s commitment to depriving children of basic human rights like clean water and healthcare, right? The same ceasefire where Israel has been reported not allowing vaccinators to enter right?

There are a string of other events that happened because of successful diplomacy.

And there’s a longer string of events of unsuccesful diplomacy on the Israeli side. I’ll also remind you that this list doesn’t start from October by the way.

Israel’s message to Hamas since the beginning of the war has more or less been: surrender or die.

Israel’s message to the Palestinian people is to simply die. Let’s not confuse what’s actually happening here.

Netanyahu never does anything in good faith. He is all about his personal advantage.

Oh, so you agree he’s untrustworthy?

some_guy , in Sean 'Diddy' Combs arrested

This month, Combs listed his home in Los Angeles that was raided in March for $61.5 million.

How ostentatious does a “home” have to be to cost that much? I mean, I can sort of imagine a ten million dollar home (from movies and television). I can’t imagine this.

Having seen that hotel physical abuse footage, I’m glad they finally arrested him. Hope they nail him at trial. Sounds like there’s a lot for which to get him.
