I hope Bernie goes on fighting for the rest of his days. After Jimmy Carter is gone, there aren’t too many political elders to look up to and remind us there are(were?) some good politicians out there.

Coasting0942 , in US consumer watchdog finds that school lunch fees are taking a toll on parents

Most banks offer bill-payer services. Add your school into your bank system and mail them a check straight from your bank. No need for envelopes or stamps, your bank will mail it for you. You can setup a repeating schedule.

$2 for me to give you my bank account info? How about you hire another clerk to process all the paper checks you nitwits. Obviously only rich saviors running the school district if they don’t see the problem with a processing fee.

iamdisillusioned ,

This sounds like the schools don’t handle the payments for lunches. A third party does and as an electronic payment processor, they probably don’t provide a physical address where a check can be received.

BigMacHole , in US consumer watchdog finds that school lunch fees are taking a toll on parents

Free School Lunch is WOKE COMMUNISM! If you TRULY want to Protect and Save the Children you need to Hire ARMED GUNMEN to Patrol their School! That way we have Enough Money to Finance ANOTHER Billionaire’s Spaceship Hobby!

Oh another thing on the list of things I think should just be free instead and covered by taxes.

inclementimmigrant , (edited ) in Tyreek Hill learned he isn’t allowed to do what white people do

I’ll be honest, I’ve seen plenty of these types of stops on YouTube, I know guilty pleasure, and once he rolled up that window, Black, White, Chinese, Indian, you were going to get pulled out and arrested for contempt of cop.

Don’t get me wrong, police do racially profile and harass Black people disproportionally and are racists assholes but the traffic stop? I don’t think race played as much of a factor than just good ol’ fragile cop ego where a white guy showing the same behavior would have been mostly the same thing happen, just that the white guy would have been in no danger of being killed but gun or suffocation.

No children here, and the article didn’t give the average price of lunch. Google tells me it’s about $3.

Not to deviate too much from the article, which seemed to focus on how school lunchrooms have adopted outside payment options that use a Ticketmaster inspired fee model, but the lunch “base price” at least is better than I had expected.

The “back in my day” price was 85 cents in the mid 80s to I believe $1.85 by the time I graduated high school in the late 90s. For it to have ok not gone up about 50% since sounds better than the price increase on many other things, especially with food prices of the last few years.

It’s cheaper than the cheapest fast food meal and much less than my cheapest meal at work, while likely being nutritionally somewhere between the 2.

Any of you with kids have a more accurate real cost of feeding kids or more stories of these odd payment schemes?

Serinus ,

The payment scams aren’t going towards food in any way. The tradeoff you’re suggesting doesn’t exist.

anon6789 , (edited )
@anon6789@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, I didn’t mean to imply it went to the food in any way, it seems a straight processing fee because we can thing. That’s why I was surprised the list price of the lunch was only $3.

My $0.85 in 1986 converts to $2.44 and $1.85 in 1998 converts to $3.57, so if the price of lunch is around $3, that makes it seem like it has been inflation proof, at least for out of pocket cost. I’m sure property tax and state tax has subsidized it, but cost to kids/parents sounds like it’s held flat.

My cheapest equivalent meal from the work cafeteria is about $10 while only being modestly higher in quality than what i remember school lunch being like,

Letsdothis , in Republicans dismayed by Trump’s ‘bad’ and ‘unprepared’ debate performance

First, im no trumpster, i dont like the guy. The MM is really pulling out all the stops on spinning this one. Trump did just fine, Republicans think he did just fine, and some even consider it a win. It’s crazy how strong the MM is pushing it a major Harris win and that Trump did very badly, and that even Republicans think he lost, the headline “Republicans dismayed” is just bullshit, I know a lot of Republicans, and none have claimed to be “dismayed”. That’s the spin. I know everyone here thinks it was a big Harris win and no one denies it, so I’m just here to tell inform yall that those of us who live in reality don’t consider it a big win for Harris or that Trump did badly. All the big news stations are helping to push that narrative of a MAJOR Harris win. As always, MSNBC, USAtoday, CNN, NBC, NYtimes, Washington Post etc. I know most of yall trust these news outlets and don’t think they have bias, but they most certainly do.

Kamala pissed me off with all the stupid faces she was making, she also just sounded like a whinny B---- several times. My personal opinion is that it was more like a tie than anything, Harris had no content to what she said. But Trump did let her get under his skin. They both lied… and quite a bit.

Anyway, I know where I am, I know the responses I’m going to get in this liberal echo chamber. So come on.

corsicanguppy ,

Trump did just fine

I’m curious at the metric that would put that “let’s get you back to bed, Nana” performance as ‘just fine’.

I hate trump but I agree. This wasn’t a landslide victory for Harris. She won in my opinion but only by a thin margin.

Letsdothis ,

Thanks, crazy you’re still getting downvoted. I guess you weren’t extreme enough.

Twodozeneggs ,

Interesting that Kamalas facial reactions bothered you that much, but apparently Trump’s clown faces didn’t even rate a mention. It’s almost like your not nearly as impartial as your pretending.

Trump looked and sounded like a sloppy bafoon.

Concepts of a plan? Eating pets?

Your huffing weapons grade copium my dude.

Letsdothis ,

Lol. Sounds like you’ve already ingested too much propaganda. You’re parroting it perfectly. You’ve mixed stupid personal opinion with the main stream medias rhetoric.

Concepts of a plan? Eating pets?

Go look up the definition of “concept.” Having a concept of a plan like nearly like saying, “I have a plan of a plan.” Which would be redundant. Saying, “I have a concept of a plan,” is like basically saying, “I have a plan.” There is nothing weird or wrong about the phrase, “i have a concept of a plan.” This is English anyway, always flexible. You parroting those talking points indicates to me you are probably incapable of an independent discerning perspective.

Twodozeneggs ,

‘I have Concepts of a plan, I’m not president’ That’s a weak, dog ate my homework, BS non-answer that any intelligent listener heard and understood as such.

‘eating pets’ You gonna defend the ex president repeating easily disproven twitter misinfo on the debate stage too? We both know it would’ve bothered you if Kamala did.

Any major gaffes or mistakes made by Kamala you care to mention? Or was it just her face that you, a paragon of impartiality, object to?

Congratulations on both inhaling and exhaling successfully despite your condition.

This is actually pretty impressive. Despite my issues with privatizing these things, and all of Elon’s bullshit, their EV suits are really nice…

Diplomjodler3 ,

If we wait for NASA to get their act together, it’ll be another fifty years, before we get back to the moon. And it’s all been private contractors all the time anyway. NASA doesn’t build any of this stuff themselves. For all three obvious craziness of Elon Musk, SpaceX has provided the best value for money to NASA of all their contractors by a mile.

ikidd ,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

Since Challenger, NASA has had its hands tied on uber-safety as defined by bureaucrats, and project budgets and timelines reflect that.

Diplomjodler3 ,

I don’t think safety consciousness is the problem here. More like having its funding tied to pork barrel politics. Just look at the SLS. There is no rational reason for this program to even exist. The only reason they can’t shut it down are politicians who can sell it to their constituents that NASA spends the money in their region on manufacturing it.

Big_Boss_77 ,

Let’s be honest though… Leon didn’t have near as much to do with this shit as he’d like you to believe. He definitely isn’t the one calling the shots
