Ah the “back to school special” Fucking tragedy

JoMiran ,
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

Tragedy, AKA just a Wednesday in the good’ole USofA?

I split my time between Wyoming and Florida. Normally, in Wyoming, I hike alone in forests full of wolves, grizzly bears, mountain lions, and territorial moose with nothing but a can of bear spray and a little bell. In Florida I go to dinner with a concealed 6-1 .45ACP pistol loaded with high velocity 230 grain hollow points.

PS: To all foreigners reading this; the US is not one big “active shooter” zone or high crime area. Most of it is super chill and friendly. It’s just that when it isn’t chill, it goes full gore and we are mostly desensitized to it at this point. (Definitely not a brag)

SteefLem ,
@SteefLem@lemmy.world avatar

Problem is i (we) mostly hear about the us from tv or shows or news. So we mostly see the shit, because somehow thats entertainment. I dont believe everyone in the usa is fucknuts but i must admit it does make me think twice about going to the us, well that and i have to be at the airport 5 fucking hours before boarding. Oh and i definitely dont want to end up in the hospital for a slinky pinky or somthing and be broke the rest of my life.

But still it happens a LOT. Maybe best to hike with wolfs ;)

This feels like a time loop at this point of seeing the same problem over and over and nobody wants to ever take any steps to change the outcome.

People want to stop this, they just all disagree about what needs to be done, so nothing gets done.

solsangraal ,
iAmTheTot ,

Burchett said that “we”, as is the legislative branch, are not going to fix it. He didn’t say he didn’t want it fixed.

Now, I disagree with him as I suspect you do too. But that’s no excuse to warp someone’s argument into something it’s not.

solsangraal ,

“If you want to legislate evil, it’s just not going to happen,” Burchett said. "We need a real revival in this country. Let’s call on our Christian ministers and our people of faith.”

in other words, “thoughts and prayers,” and in other other words, “i don’t want it fixed” because if prayers aren’t stopping a shooting at a christian school, then surprise surprise: prayers and faith and ministers are worse than useless, they pretend to be a solution where they’re actually a hindrance

iAmTheTot ,

No, it’s not the same as saying they don’t want it fixed. I think that he is woefully wrong, even negligently wrong. But I don’t need to misconstrue his stance or argument to think that.

solsangraal ,

ok dude. there is absolutely nothing to suggest that the GOP wants to fix the gun problem. NOTHING. that includes whatever tf his name is in TN

but go on thinking they do. have fun

paraphrand ,

Fact: Tim wants to fix the UFO problem more than the gun problem.

solsangraal ,

i’m sure there are plenty of not-problems that he desperately wants to fix. i know nothing about the guy, but i’m willing to bet he sees gay books in the library as a dire threat to the children which needs to be corrected immediately

iAmTheTot ,

You’re still misrepresenting their stance. They don’t believe there’s a “gun problem”. That doesn’t mean they want children to die.

Corvidae , in NaNoWriMo is in disarray after organizers defend AI writing tools

Has writing the novel changed in the last several decades? It used to be very rare that any given writer would hit the best seller list, everyone else was steered towards taking writing classes or purchasing somewhat pricey seminars. What is the motive to defend AI writing bots? AI isn’t going to be purchasing seminars or taking classes.

“Generative AI empowers not the artist, not the writer, but the tech industry,” Star Wars: Aftermath author Chuck Wendig said in response to NaNoWriMo’s stance. “It steals content to remake content, graverobbing existing material to staple together its Frankensteinian idea of art and story.”

I have not seen a single indication of genius by Musk. I see a spoiled trust fund man-child in the right place at the right time and who frequently pays other people to come up for ideas for him. I can literally think of dozens of people I’ve known over the years who are far more intelligent and would do much more with his starter funds from daddy.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I am sure I am not the only one who thinks a large amount of his success stems from Peter Thiel wanting to fuck him. And possibly actually fucking him.

mosiacmango ,

Musk came in as “the money guy” to PayPal before Theil was rich. It’s why he was CEO for 6 months, but everyone hated him as a leader so much they fired him.

They all got really, really rich together, and the Elon risked it all on Tesla and survived via government handouts for a decade.

Easy to take big risks when you know you can pop back to dads emerald mine for a fill up at any point.

doughless ,

For someone who likes to think of himself as a modern Nikola Tesla, he acts much more like Edison.

mosiacmango ,

Its always projection. Claims to be a Nikola, is actually a Thomas.

dogslayeggs ,

I’ve been in meetings with him when he was still active at SpaceX and before he truly dove off the deep end. I had direct conversations with him telling him his engineers were wrong about something. He was quite intelligent and knew his shit. He was arrogant and a dick, but it was obvious he knew a LOT about the rockets he was building. He wasn’t doing the engineering, but he definitely understood the work going on.

Now, though, the dude is a fucking lunatic. I don’t know if he just started taking too many drugs or if the billions of dollars made something break in his mind or what, but he was not like this back then.

Ragnarok314159 ,

No, he didn’t. He has no knowledge of rockets outside of Wikipedia. He has no knowledge of engineering outside of some shit science show.

I have worked with engineers who worked with him at Tesla and they say he is a functional idiot, borderline mentally defective. He will go into meeting and act like he understand magnetism and everyone has to sit there awkwardly listening for an hour about him rambling on like a moronic 6th grader until he leaves.
