Zerlyna , (edited ) in Stephen King gives blunt three-word response after discovering Florida banned 23 of his books in schools

Every book report in high school where I could choose the author was a Stephen King novel and I turned out fine. And in Florida too. Class of 1991. 😁. BRD.

IphtashuFitz ,

Back in the ‘80’s I had a high school English teacher that had us read his Night Shift short stories. The entire class loved it.

Reverendender ,

Night Shift is fantastic.

Not at all.

InternetUser2012 ,

Welp, then according to their plan, you didn’t turn out fine, you’re the problem. Good for you though, I’m hoping your state turns it around quickly because I really want to live there. It’s beautiful and I love the weather there, I just can’t deal with the bullshit they’re doing.

It’s not cheap. I left in 2005 because the insurance cost kept doubling every year despite never having a claim and I was 30 miles inland. And the deductibles would increase too. t’s worse now. Just do your homework first.

The image is a flyer for a “Banned Books Club” (Bokklubb för förbjudna böcker) targeted at young people between the ages of 13 and 18 in Bromölla, Sweden. It invites readers to explore the topic of banned books, asking questions like “Which books are banned, where are they banned, and why?” The club aims to discuss these books during the fall and winter, and the first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 19, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the library (biblioteket).

The flyer has a “STOP” sign, a warning label at the bottom, and a bird illustration. It encourages participants to sign up via email and features logos for Kulturpunkten and Bromölla Municipality.

“vaporize”

Stand back, microplastics, here comes vaporplastics.

Wilzax ,

Plastics are only plastics when many separate (often gaseous) molecules called monomers form large chains or webs called polymers. If you vaporize a polymer, it gets reverted to being many monomers

SnotFlickerman ,
@SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Great info, I was just making a bad joke. Thanks for the clarifications.

penquin ,

Are monomers harmless?

HK65 ,

These specific monomers can be found in nature, and they are widely used in industrial applications beyond making plastics, for example they can fuel welding torches.

The monomer of PE is the gas ethylene, which is a plant hormone among other things, and if you combine it with hydrogen from water it makes ethanol, which is the kind of alcohol that is only mildly poisonous so we drink it. It’s the easiest way to get alcohol without fermentation, so we use it in industry. So I guess mostly it is.

Propylene, which is the monomer of polypropylene, is a gas that’s toxic in large concentrations, apparently it’s what makes forest fires poisonous, but it’s fine to have a little bit in the air, and it’s at least not carcinogenic.

The problem with plastics is not that they are toxic, it’s that we make too much and litter in everywhere, including our own body.

penquin ,

Much appreciated

PugJesus , (edited ) in Hundreds of ‘Game of Thrones’ props are up for auction, from Jon Snow’s sword to dragon skulls

It’s astounding how a bad final season managed to obliterate GoT from the cultural zeitgeist. It was an absolute juggernaut, and while House of Dragons or whatever it is is successful, it’ll never be the massive fixture that GoT was.

girlfreddy OP , (edited )
@girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

I rewatched GoT a few weeks back. Got to the final episode and didn’t recognize one bit of it. Then I remembered I refused to watch it when it came out. Figured I’d be happier remembering the series as the beauty it was. ;)

PugJesus ,

It’s a real shame. While the later seasons are weaker, they’re not nearly enough to kill what is still a fantastic show. But that last season? Seven hells.

BruceTwarzen ,

As if season 7 wasn’t just as bad. And season 6 was nothing to brag about either

PugJesus ,

7 was incredibly mediocre, but a mediocre end wouldn’t have killed its cultural influence. Lots of shows have mediocre ends. 8 was pure trash, though. Not even any effort put into it by the showrunners. I feel terrible for everyone involved in actually making the goddamn show.

Friedman argues the US should support Israel’s annexation “based first and foremost on biblical prophecies and values”, saying that such a policy “hearkens back to basic Judeo-Christian values of kindness, human dignity, humility and prosperity”.

It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad and ironic.

mox , in Researchers unlock cheap way to vaporize plastic and use it to make more plastic

If it will help us clean up our mess, then great.

But it’s not going to make it okay to continue churning out disposable plastics. We need the tech and we need to stop.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

That doesn’t make sense. If we could reuse the same plastics over and over, they would be the ultimate in sustainable materials.

Grandwolf319 , in Elon Musk keeps spreading a very specific kind of racism.

So I was very curious about where all this narrative stemmed from as I kept seeing far right posts comparing IQ and different races.

Saw this video by Shawn (2 hour+ long) and he broke it down very well.

Basically, it’s just bad studies where they test both segregated white schools and also black schools (which were under funded and had average lower income levels for parents), then use the result as the smoking gun.

It essentially comes down to:

Having a head start in life passes down the generation, so high income groups (and races over represented there) will always have a higher average IQ cause by the nature of IQ tests being just academic tests.
