papabobolious , in Drivers Hate The Tech In Their Cars

The only features I really want is ABS, Bluetooth and a physical interface. Everything else I would rather not pay for.

I live in Sweden so it’s not like I need AC, I don’t use cruise etc. and most other modern features mainly serve to annoy me.

blarth ,

Wireless CarPlay.

Scrollone ,

Well, I think you’ll need AC anyway, since it works as a heat pump to heat your car up in winter.

BilboBargains ,

ABS has been an EU legal requirement for at least ten years. It’s not generally marketed as a feature unless it’s part of a safety-stability system e.g. ESP and collision mitigation.

If these control systems are implemented skillfully you won’t know they are present on the vehicle. People think they understand how a car works right up to the point they have to make one and then go back to talking about bicycles.

RedditWanderer , in Man distraught over planned sale of late mother's home fatally shoots 4 family members and himself

Can’t put my finger on it, but I feel we have a word for fatally shooting people.

I guess we’re avoiding the word gun in titles now…

JonsJava OP ,
@JonsJava@lemmy.world avatar

You unable to see the word “shoot” in the title? I doubt it was a blow dart…erm… oh wait. That’s a gun too!

I don’t think it was a crossbow, or long bow, or a water…damn it. Keep coming back to “gun”.

If you can’t discern that it’s a gun from the title, there’s not much to do.

Kaboom ,

A bow isn’t a gun

JonsJava OP ,
@JonsJava@lemmy.world avatar

I didn’t say it was.

skeezix ,

What term would you use that’s more accurate than ‘fatally shoots’? The term ‘murdered’ would simply obfuscate the method of killing.

Kaboom ,

Why does the tool matter? Could easily do it with a knife

DmMacniel ,
@DmMacniel@feddit.org avatar

Defending against a knife is a tad “easier” than being peng’d to death. Also there is that second amendment those Americans really really love. I don’t see any amendment regarding knives.

zaph ,

What else can you fatally shoot someone with if the title is trying to avoid blaming guns?

catloaf ,

A syringe?

zaph ,

You inject with a syringe but maybe their mind went there since that’s referred to as a shot. I guess they could also assume someone forced them to drink 1.5oz of liquor and died from it. Maybe it’s because I’m American but when I hear “fatally shot” only one instrument comes to mind.

forensic genetic genealogy

I’m happy they got the guy, but this is why people submitting their DNA to any lab should understand that it also reveals the DNA of all your blood relatives to some extent, not just yours and yours alone.

Not everyone would be pleased to find out they inadvertently got their child arrested for whatever crime even if it is ‘just’.

Cosmonauticus ,

I’d be cool with it if it was murder. That being said fuck these companies selling data to police and insurance companies

JonsJava OP ,
@JonsJava@lemmy.world avatar

They don’t sell it, to my knowledge. That serial killer in CA was found because they submitted it the same way you or I would, and waited for the company to return familial matches.

NocturnalMorning ,

They matched the guys own DNA to DNA he left at the crime scene. Did you eve read the article, or do you just need something to be outraged about today?

JonsJava OP ,
@JonsJava@lemmy.world avatar

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson said on social media that his office’s sexual assault kit initiative funded forensic genetic genealogy testing that “narrowed the list of suspects.”

so…

Did you eve read the article?

Cephalotrocity ,

Thanks. Not only that but did I sound outraged? People should know to check with all their direct blood relatives and get their approval before submitting potential evidence to 23AndMe or similar to avoid potential family friction/crises. That’s all.

JonsJava OP ,
@JonsJava@lemmy.world avatar

You didn’t sound outraged.

I’m guessing projecting.

AbouBenAdhem ,

I don’t get that—they got eleven matches in their database, which presumably only covers a fraction of the whole population. So there are potentially tens or hundreds of people out there who could match, most of which they don’t even know. And the article doesn’t really say how they narrowed down the list to him in particular, especially since he’s not even from the same state.

meco03211 ,

Easy. You have 11. Eliminate the women because they would know it’s male based on DNA. Now we’re at 6. 4 were verifiably in different states at the time of the crime. 2 left. Stake them out for a bit and gather some garbage likely to have DNA. 1 sample is a perfect match.

Alternatively, those last 2 sample could both not match and then they just continue their investigation.

AbouBenAdhem ,

But my point is, those original eleven weren’t an exhaustive list of the possibilities, just the ones that happened to be in their database—so narrowing it down to one means nothing. It sounds entirely possible, and perhaps even likely, that the real perpetrator wasn’t on the list to begin with.

Cephalotrocity ,

It wasn’t a direct match. It partially matched to 11 people so they did follow-up investigative work on the 11 matches looking for anyone in their families that stood out as a likely suspect due to things like work proximity, lifestyle, criminal record, familiarity with the victim and so on.

corsicanguppy ,

I’m a twin. I do not have exclusive license over my DNA, and also I fear I’m gonna get picked-up for some crime he committed 20 years ago.

We (Americans) will never give up our guns, especially if you are working class.

We should continue to help fund to uphold our 2A rights.

Gun safety and training should be an option for everyone.

Duamerthrax ,

Do you really think Gun Safety Training would have prevented this one?

TheTechnician27 ,
@TheTechnician27@lemmy.world avatar

Everyone who makes this absurd argument knows it won’t. They just want to keep their stupid toys and don’t care about the lives it costs, so they muddy the waters to delay actual action on preventing these needless deaths.

  • “Just arm and train everyone bro [so we can keep being the problem].”
  • “Just use ‘clean coal’ bro [so we can keep making billions destroying the climate].”
  • “Just make more plastic recycling plants bro [so we can keep littering the environment with mountain ranges’ worth of single-use trash]”.
  • “Just use EVs bro [so we don’t have to reevaluate how fundamentally terrible car-centrism is]”.

Every time there’s a systemic problem in the US, someone shows up to make a proposal that puts a very small band-aid on the problem at best while making it much more deeply entrenched in the long-term and consequently more of a problem (in the above examples, we have respectively more guns and gun culture, more investment put into generating energy via coal, more infrastructure for plastic, and more car infrastructure). Basically, “I don’t want my guns taken away ever, so the solution I’m going to come up with is that everyone has them and so the actually effective solution of restricting them becomes literally impossible.” Their solution doesn’t just not work; it actively causes more deaths while serving their own self-interest.

msage , in RFK Jr. Tells Tucker Carlson He’s Been Asked by Trump ‘To Help Pick the People Who Will Be Running the Government’

We all know well that Trump will use the Heritage Foundation to choose his people, not some rando who nobody cares about.

Why even write an article about that?

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Enough people care about RFK Jr. to possibly swing the election in states where it’s close. I hope not, but don’t discount it.

Adderbox76 ,

I’m pretty sure it’s the other way around. Heritage Foundation will be picking FOR him.

Trump is just a useful idiot that they can manipulate because he wants the power to stay out of prison. They put whoever they want in place, they’ll drop a binder of things for him to sign on his desk on day one, and in return, they’ll help him steal the election so he can make all his legal troubles go away.

That’s why he has no idea on actual issues or policy. Because he doesn’t care. It’s useless information to him since other people are in charge of that while he gets to pretend he’s important.
