drunkosaurus , in Trump tries to reset his campaign after brutal month

He needs a factory reset not a campaign reset

GiddyGap , in Nikki Haley in Taiwan says an isolationist policy is not healthy, while expressing support for Trump

At one point, I actually respected Haley for running against Trump and calling out his constant crap. But she has zero spine. She’s turned out to be just another maga supporter defending him at every turn.

krashmo ,

Is that surprising to you? Anyone left in the Republican party cares more about money and power than principles or whatever else you think a politician is supposed to care about.

nifty ,
@nifty@lemmy.world avatar

whatever else you think a politician is supposed to care about.

Technically, that’s the republic. Currently it’s the unheard and unseen masses of staffers and wonks and bureaucrats who hold this mess together. The fancy poster boy people are just there to rally the common folk around a single figure.

GiddyGap ,

Not surprised. Just sad to see that she actually turned out to be just like the others. Wouldn’t have voted for her either way, but still.

haunte ,

She’s fishing for a spot in his administration, even though his chances of winning are going down. She could have taken a stand and joined the never trumpers, but that would require patience she lacks because as long as he’s alive trump owns the Republican party lock, stock and barrel. It will be interesting to see what happens to it when trump finally croaks.

IphtashuFitz , in The maker of Mike Lynch's yacht says it took 16 minutes to sink and the crew should have had time to rescue passengers

There’s security camera footage that shows the yacht anchored in relatively calm water. Within about 3 minutes it turns into an incredibly violent storm. Most of the yacht is obscured by the storm but you can still see the mast light through most of it. Then suddenly the mast light is no longer there…

Certainly nowhere near 16 minutes.

The incident is also being reviewed by the school.

Capilouto said the university condemns “this behavior and will not tolerate it under any circumstance” and that images in the video do not honor “our responsibilities to each other.”

They better kick the bitch out.

Edit: guess I skimmed the headline to get to the meat of the story, my bad.

FlyingSquid , in Are You Sure Your House Is Worth That Much? Climate risk is still not being priced into American homeownership.
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m sure my house is worth more than the houses on either side of me. The lady who owned one died and apparently there’s no clear line of inheritance, so it’s been empty for years. We’re not sure what happened on the other side, probably a foreclosure, but the family who lived there left in a real hurry and then some squatters lived there for a while.

We have a relatively modest ranch house built in the 1980s, so it’s not exactly up to code these days. Three bedrooms, 1600 square feet, no basement, unfinished attic. The much larger squatter house is worth far less than ours because the inside is just wrecked. I wouldn’t even trust standing on the second floor based on the photos I’ve seen on Zillow.

RIP Florida.

Detroit could be a gold mine.

Shortstack ,

Detroit definitely is. Stuff is cheap there and things are turning around, just doesn’t have the momentum or wider recognition of any of this yet.

There’s a reason why Portland Oregon was so well known for being weird. Parts of the city were dingy for a long time but if you were glass half full about that it meant living there was affordable. All the poor creatives could live in a city open to change, not just the folks with high paying bullshit jobs that normally are the only ones who can afford to live close to work in the city.

If I had the money to invest in some real estate, I would have bought stuff in the Detroit area since it’s got all the same ingredients to be the next Portland

Grimy , in Microsoft's Copilot falsely accuses court reporter of crimes he covered

So just to be clear, if you can sue companies for this, there is no open source scene and we end up with only Microsoft and Google in the game since they will be the only one able to eat the fines.

There’s no easy way to solve this problem, especially with the tech being so recent and the scope so big. In any case, it’s user error. Llms aren’t expected to be right at all times, especially when it’s a coding model about obscure journalists. They are tools to help the user, and every step requires verification from the user.

They aren’t a replacement for truth, they can’t stand in for wikipedia and news articles, they aren’t meant to be cited in papers, etc.

robsuto ,

What do you mean by ‘there’s no open source scene’?

I don’t understand what open source has to do with this.

vaquedoso ,

He’s saying that the only corporations with the fighting power to take on legal battles will end up being the big ones. So we may end up in a situation where AI will only be in the hands of the mega wealthy, instead of in the hands of regular people.

2xsaiko ,
@2xsaiko@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

“Open source” models usually run on your local hardware instead of accessing it through some corporation’s website. Who are you gonna sue when your own computer spits out garbage about you, yourself?

ravhall ,

People don’t understand AI.

Grimy ,

I imagine the ones creating and distributing the model. Even if you only got sued when you hosted a model and not when you shared it, it still doesn’t make for a good ecosystem. Regular people should have the choice to use models even if it spits out garbage for certain tasks, it might suit their needs for their own task perfectly.

There’s no reason to gatekeep llms and lock them behind hardware requirements, it’s up to people to understand their limitations and what they are for.

blazera , in Oklahoma revokes license of teacher who gave class QR code to Brooklyn library in book-ban protest
@blazera@lemmy.world avatar

Do you think its a feedback loop that states with the worst test scores make the worst decisions about education?

Snapz ,

A designed loop until they can make the whole thing implode and eliminate public education. Goal is to then drive to religious schools with vouchers that cost more and more work time and importantly to keep woman in the home, not working, and persistently pregnant.

Pacattack57 ,

No because the same fuckers have been in power for the last 70 years. They’re the ones that started the changes.

linearchaos , in Two states become first in US to ban use of PFAS in firefighters’ protective gear
@linearchaos@lemmy.world avatar

I am extremely suspect that they were able to remove the bias for cancer from turnout gear. These guys daily job normalizes breathing in of cancer giving dust. They disproportionately smoke because it lessens the effect of having to work in a burned out area.

I hope they have a good non-cancer giving candidate to replace the PFAs. As long as the new garments underperform the old garments they will find ways to get a hold of the old garments.

AmidFuror ,

Yeah. The article uses "linked to" to describe that the chemicals may cause cancer. That's weasel worded and needs to be quantitative. The argument that some departments have started using PFAS-free gear and that proves the chemicals aren't needed is specious as well. You need to quantify the deaths and injuries from gear with and without PFAS.

Counting ladies around the lunch table whose husbands have prostate cancer is not good science.

ravhall ,

Smoking generally exacerbates the harmful effects of smoke exposure. The combination of tobacco smoke and smoke from fires can compound respiratory and cardiovascular issues, making firefighters more vulnerable to diseases.
