Their voters are (somehow) split on that issue, so understandable they don’t want to highlight a weakness during their convention. There’s plenty of other issues that Democrats are split on, too, as with any two party system. (And btw, as a whole, they’re still a hell of a lot better on Gaza than their GOP counterparts, or as my crazy GOP uncle-in-law said recently in a family get together, he wants to see Gaza turned to glass as Muslims deserve).
Would I like to see a better DNC? Sure. But I’ll accept that at least they’re better than last time, allowing AOC to actually give a speech and highlight economic disparities more throughout (as in, less afraid of the socialist label). Plus Harris picked Walz over Shapiro, which really would have reinforced the isreal position.
This endless “they’re not as bad as GOP” with regards to an ongoing genocide is so fucking disgusting. They’re mass murdering fucking children. They’re creating a famine and large scale humanitarian crisis as Palestinians are crammed into an ever smaller area with continuously less food and water.
The only appropriate response is unyielding international condemnation and a demand that Israel withdraw entirely from the Gaza strip and the west bank. There’s no such fucking thing as “not as bad as __” when they’re still supporting a god damn genocide.
The Uyghurs are being genocided in China. The Rohingya are being genocided in Burma. There are people being genocided in South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Syria. This list is surely incomplete. By absolutely no means am I minimizing the plight of Palestinians in Gaza, and I fervently condemn all such actions.
That said, geopolitics is a filthy, nasty, amoral business, and humans are selfish and vicious. The Democrats are playing the game as best they can. Israel has one of the most powerful militaries on the planet, and they can destroy Gaza all on their own. They are the only nation on Earth who refuse to admit they are a nuclear power. The USA is playing two sides in the conflict; publicly they vow to support their ally Israel. They promise weapons and aid. Behind the scenes they are delaying the regular aid, and the additional aid is scheduled years out. The USA is also divided roughly 50/50 on how to react to this conflict and is forced to play a similar game with the American public, because there are factions here calling for Civil War 2, and wouldn’t that complicate things?
You want immediate solutions, just like we all do. The only solution is convincing Israel to disengage, which is certainly being communicated behind the scenes. International sanctions would help, but international public support must get behind that. Should we move a couple carrier groups just offshore to threaten Israel? Sounds like an option, but what would that do to the balance of powers in the Middle East? What would Iran do? How will China react to such provocations? Will they take the opportunity to distract from their domestic issues by invading Taiwan, the global high tech manufacturing powerhouse? How will it affect the war in Ukraine and Russia? Iran is already helping Russia and brutalizing their own people for advocating freedom.
Conflict between three precarious superpowers vying for supremacy and balancing conflicts between their weaker neighbors. Nukes all over the place. That is a plausible scenario for how to start WW3. Probably something best avoided, exceedingly carefully, and unfortunately, horrifically slowly.
So that’s the situation. Is there anything I missed? Of course there is. There are thousands of factors in play. Take for instance, the fact that military technology is on the cusp of changing completely to autonomous drone swarms. There’s the fact that MAGA is being driven by an Evangelical death cult who are convinced that if they glass the Middle East, they can force Jesus to return for Armageddon. Then there’s climate change to deal with.
Those smaller genocides I mentioned at the start get largely ignored simply because those nations are not major players, or because we can do almost nothing about them.
There are no easy, quick solutions. Geopolitics is a horror show. I’m not trying to convince you to disengage, or accept it, or get used to it. By all means, engage, refuse to accept it, rage against the dying of the light.
But remember that people are engaging in global diplomatic strategy because they too are horrified. Remember that the stakes are calamitous. This is not the democrat’s fault. We are 8 billion barely-not-chimps who have seized the keys to the Universe somewhat earlier than we have figured out there are no gods coming to save us from ourselves. Sh!t just is.
And if you want to see just how bad it can get, there’s always letting Trump turn everything to hell again. It’s mind-boggling how much of our current situation is directly his stupid fucking fault. That’s all a protest vote will get us. Yes, the GOP is horrifyingly worse than the Democrats. You care deeply and that is a wondrous, beautiful thing. We need you. Stop deluding yourself that both sides are the same. Get out and fucking vote.
In school and 99% of scenarios, physicality doesn’t do any good. But if you have a really young child, like 3-5, and they hurt another child or an animal and show no remorse, I think spanking is acceptable as a punishment immediately after the incident. They might have trouble with developing empathy and need to understand they hurt another being.
This is the same logic given for school aged children to not fight back against bullies for decades, and bullying is now a huge problem.
I’m talking about a situation where your own child is exhibiting bullying characteristics at a very young age. You can’t sit them down and explain why pulling their sibling’s hair shouldn’t give them gratification…they still want to do it. Just when you’re not around. The consequences have to be emotionally driven, and something they can understand and feel even when an adult is not present. What’s your alternative? Timeout? Take a toy away?
I had a brother who tormented me for many years. My parents tried various things, and nothing worked. The thing that did work was me hitting him in the face with a metal belt when I was like ten when he physically attacked me for the millionth time. He just name-called after that, never touched me.
Obviously an adult is not going to do something like that. But how do you correct a very young child who is exhibiting signs that they are growing into a bully?
Really you can if you pick a different pharmacy to get it at. Then again not sure if you’re in a state that has mandated record keeping. Then I guess you can’t but in GA I just go to CVS for my first one and the Kroger for my mid year one.
Probably not my Trump-loving conspiracy theorist coworker who mentioned this to me and said “It’s scary”. Not to be confused with the other Trump-loving conspiracy theorist coworker who believes that there wasn’t a pandemic but several people that he knows got COVID multiple times each.

In schools? How is this even still an open question? I thought the debate had at least moved on to whether parents should be allowed to hurt their children, even in the US.
For what it’s worth, you most likely had much more mild symptoms for a much shorter duration because you were vaccinated! But I still apologize, getting sick sucks.
There’s a fair bit of masking or luck involved in that at this point. The current crop of COVID vaccines don’t prevent disease for more than a few months.
I tried to get a booster a couple months ago because last autumn’s shots were waning. I was turned away by pharmacists, even though my insurance would cover it. They claimed they were reserved for people in certain high risk groups (maybe due to a shortage, although I’m not aware of a demand peak in summertime, and I hadn’t seen any shortage mentioned in the news).
Whatever the underlying reasons might be, the result was that I tried repeatedly to get a booster, and was denied.
I mentioned this on lemmy (in this community, I think) and a couple of jerks appeared, one suggesting that I was anti-vax (how??) and another accusing me of spreading misinformation (what misinformation??) A mod then removed my comment, citing misinformation.
In any case, both experiences were really discouraging. I hope other people who actually want to be vaccinated don’t run in to the same problems.

It honestly didn’t occur to me that the people walking around in Amazon branded shirts driving Amazon branded trucks as part of the Amazon delivery fleet could be legally considered not employees at Amazon.
With enough legislation and rulings like this, we might begin to slightly unbreak this terrible system.
The Republican party should die with Trump’s failed campaign… we’ll always have conservatives but that role could easily be played by the democratic party which would oppose a more liberal branch party. Republicans have moved so far into conspiracy theories that their core party platforms are not relevant to reasonable policy discussions.
Where did I say they were? Modern us politics isn’t based in policy discussions - we could easily see a party swap in the next decade if Trump royally fucks the GOP… that isn’t a given and we all need to vote - but it is a possibility.
I get a flu shot every year. Mostly, I forget to do so until the text comes out from my pharmacy. I don’t recall hearing about a new covid shot from my pharmacy. I also listened to the radio campaign s they did but didn’t know a new shot was out
