I always assumed that undocumented workers were paid ‘under the table’. But it makes sense to have them/some be on payroll for the employer. Can’t be having zero people on payroll when there’s obviously employees.

If I had infinite cosmic powers, I’d remove immigrants from countries which hate immigrants for a month. They’d go to some kind of pleasant dimension where all their needs were met, like a really nice holiday. And, back in our world, everything which immigrants work hard to achieve while getting little respect for it wouldn’t be happening, and it would be a shitshow.
And then I would make all the people that didn’t learn to stop being fuckknuckles from that experience live in their own bellybutton for a month.
Make it three months. It would take at least that long for the loss of their labor to start being felt across the board. Undocumented immigrants are vital in some of the damnest places and their absence would not e particularly noticeable at first.

Yes, negligence resulting in the death of a person that is unable to care for themselves is a crime. “I forgot, sorry” is an acceptable answer when you didn’t get something on the grocery list. It doesn’t suffice when someone’s life is in your hands.
it’s a really long article that goes into depth on the issue with a lot of anecdotes and research. The gist of it is though that while these people have committed negligence, it happens to people who are otherwise not negligent. It can really happen to anyone, all it takes is some stress or unexpected plans changing.
People should be aware of how easy it can happen to anyone and not pass it off as just bad parents getting what they deserve.

And then you’re on autopilot, going to work like you do every day. Your body can be trained to do certain things automatically, with basically no mental input on your side. You never take the kid to daycare because your schedule. Then the ONE DAY that your routine changes… It’s one of the most important things you need to keep in mind.
Ever pulled your car into a spot and thought to yourself “wait I don’t remember stopping at any lights HOLY SHIT DID I JUST RUN EVERY RED” but the truth is, no. You did not. Either they are so routine to stop at that you don’t notice on autopilot, or there WERE no reds. You are not a bad or negligent driver. You were on autopilot.

One of our orderlies said he thought I was a dick until he realized I only have one social personality and everybody gets the exact same treatment whether it’s my bosses boss or my homeless psych patient with charges. I have pretty much 0 grasp on social cues, but I will absolutely wipe your ass if I can see that you genuinely need it. It was one of the better compliments I’ve ever gotten and honestly I think one of the biggest reasons I get along with most of my patients better than people who can’t understand that mindset.
Did any of the main news channels in the US even cover this panel? I haven’t seen any. The media and online punditry seem far more happy to obsess over Hamas flag waving protesters outside than to listen to experienced doctors relay the horrors they saw in Gaza.
