FlyingSquid , in Teacher says contract wasn't renewed because he wouldn't use trans students' preferred names
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

He better not fucking win. Apart from it being bigoted against trans kids, this opens the door for teachers to give kids whatever insulting nicknames they want. Call the clumsy kid the r-word? Don’t violate his free speech! Call the black kid the n-word? The Book of Mormon clearly says black people are inferior! Don’t violate his freedom of religion!

Samvega ,

Put Elon back in school and call him Cis.

Viking_Hippie ,

No need. He’s already getting schooled on his own platform daily by trans, intersex, nonbinary, and cis people of all ages, sexualities, races, and nationalities.

He’s a unifier: uniting the world in opposition of his bigotry and general obnoxiousness!

joyjoy ,

Only the Spanish teacher is allowed to do that. Michael -> Miguel.

Viking_Hippie ,
rc__buggy ,

He better not fucking win because a public school teacher needs to check their religion at the door. The SC said that private businesses can practice their religion as part of commerce but this is the public sector. Kim Davis lost her case about refusing the same sex marriage license due to “her religion” and this should follow.

TheAlbatross , in Teacher says contract wasn't renewed because he wouldn't use trans students' preferred names

The part of the gospel of Luke where he writes that Jesus said “oh and trans people? Not a fan, we shouldn’t respect em.” always did strike me as kinda out of the blue, but it is in there…

God hates figs. Everyone knows that. But while researching the a joke to reply to you with, I learned that apparently, figs are jews. Who knew!!

Never did come up with a joke.

Skua ,

The bible would surely never support people changing their names to reflect their social role either, like when Jesus gave Simon the name Cephas or Peter to reflect his position as the rock the church was founded on

prole ,

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.

6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart.

7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men,

8 because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.

9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.

(Ephesians 6:5-10)

The direct words of Jesus, not the Old Testament god.

This was a man who told people to give up their worldly possessions… But what, giving up but concept of owning humans as slaves was just a step too far?

What a bunch of bullshit. Disgusting, and inexcusable.

FlyingSquid , in ‘Bumble fumble’: online dating apps struggle as people swear off swiping
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve never used one of those apps, but the risk of being defrauded or, worse, assaulted, would be way too high for me to take that sort of chance.

Samvega ,

I can’t imagine how unpleasant I would feel if I was defrauded or harmed because of using a dating website. I’m going to call that ‘appalling’, although that’s too weak a word.

I’m so happy that I met my wife through circumstance and chance and we just love each other and that’s it.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I got married before smartphones were a thing. I’m just lucky my wife loves me even though I’m an idiot.

ji17br ,

It’s really not that hard, don’t give out personal info. Meet in a public place.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Long cons are a thing. I think I would just try to date people I already knew or just stay single. But I’m not the most trusting soul after getting burned a couple of times when I owned a business.

ji17br ,

Yeah but that’s not an issue with dating apps. That’s just an issue with humans.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

True, but dating apps put you in touch with strangers as possible dates rather than people you already know. I admit this is way out of my ballpark and I’m just speculating about myself. I don’t think I’d do anything like speed dating if that’s still a thing either.

FlyingSquid , in Her name was on a filing agreeing to be a Cornel West elector. Her question: What's an elector?
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It’s an effort that West himself apparently knows nothing about. His campaign did not immediately respond for comment Friday evening.

You’d think that, even if he knows nothing about it, his campaign would immediately respond to the Associated Press asking about it.

Seems more like an “I don’t want to know about it” situation.

catloaf ,

That’s code for “we sent an email right before publishing and didn’t instantly get a reply”.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Not in my experience working in TV journalism. And I doubt the AP is less professional than the local TV shitshows I worked for.

jonne ,

They say ‘Friday evening’, presumably this Friday evening, after all businesses are closed. I’m assuming West hired some third party to get all this done, and there’s no way they’re going to get to the bottom of this over the weekend.

The West campaign has been a bit of a shitshow from the start, and while he’s a brilliant academic, he’s not an experienced politician and he hasn’t exactly hired the best campaign managers (also partly because you get blacklisted by the big parties if you ever work on a third party campaign).

girlfreddy OP ,
@girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

Or it could be his campaign wanted to look into it before giving a quote.

Not everything is a conspiracy.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I never suggested it was a conspiracy.

girlfreddy OP ,
@girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

True. It just seemed to me that wanting a quote right away wouldn’t give the campaign time to research it themselves. Which is fair, especially in light of what the AP found.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

All I can say is that, in my experience, they give these places a good 4-6 hours at minimum to respond. In general it was a good 12.

For one thing, it takes time for these articles to pass from writer to editor to “print.” Less time now that it’s all digital, but we’re not talking 10 minutes.

BigPotato ,

I’d be more surprised if they had an answer ready to go. That’s, like, proof they knew.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

A denial would be a ready-to-go answer…

I met my husband of 8.5 years on Craigslist Casual Encounters. Those were the times.

betterdeadthanreddit , in Teacher says contract wasn't renewed because he wouldn't use trans students' preferred names

Good, fuck off. He can find a new job where he’s not expected to treat his fellow humans with the respect they deserve. Being wrong about the nature of reality doesn’t grant the right to be an asshole even if they sincerely believe that it should.

Samvega ,

Since I realised it, I have never forgotten that applying basic decency to all living beings is a revolutionary act that will be resisted in various ways, including violence, by those who uphold a status quo based on forced inequity.

“The next election won’t be decided at a Ballot Box,” an AP3 leader wrote several months ago in a private Telegram chat. “It’ll be decided at the ammo box.”

Well that’s not a little terrifying. :/

bhamlin , in Donald Trump says he's "entitled" to personally attack Kamala Harris

I mean, he is right about that. He can attack her however he wants. People don’t have to like it though. There will be consequences. He is entitled to those, too.

AssaultPepper , in ‘Bumble fumble’: online dating apps struggle as people swear off swiping

Met my fiance on a dating app, but I think they really peaked in the pandemic for the reasons the article stated that nobody had anywhere else to go.

Now it’s likely just filters for people who spend the time cultivating a social presence elsewhere.

BobGnarley , in Trump Warns That if Kamala Harris Wins, ‘Everybody Gets Health Care’

Yeah guys just hold your breath for that free healthcare. Fucking LOL.

Seriously though at least she’s a little better than that asshole. But free healthcare is a pipe dream.

Unsurprisingly this Jordan seems to be following another Jordan’s footsteps … “Jordan Peterson, the self-proclaimed anti-political correctness warrior whose refusal to use gender-neutral pronouns has sparked a vicious battle at the University of Toronto campus.” Archived source

Ironically, Jordan became seen as a gender-neutral name in the 1970s and onwards.
