Doom , in Trump Claims Stock Market Will ‘Crash’ While Fox News Ticker Shows Massive Market Gains On Screen

Trump dude at my job went around a week ago telling everyone the market crashed.

Doesn’t even own stocks or understand anything related to the market, it is just what was going on in Republican world last week

Huh, the quote with context is actually much worse than the headline. I’m impressed.

All the headlines I found were either understated or sensational. I thought understated would be better.

Nice swipe at veterans there. Basically his new version of calling the dead soldiers suckers while visiting Arlington. And love the slight that it’s better to have the medal with the word “President” in front of it instead of “Congressional”, because it feeds his narcissism.

umbraroze , in When Is “Recyclable” Not Really Recyclable? When the Plastics Industry Gets to Define What the Word Means.

Life would be so much more awesome if the rest of the civilised world adopted bottle/can deposit systems. Plastic bottles can be washed and reused. Aluminum cans? Melt 'em, reforge 'em, badassery continues.

Duamerthrax ,

I’m nervous about reused plastic disintegrating now. Aluminum, glass or wax paper is all we really need. Remember wax paper milk cartons? There are also aluminum “bottle” in the same shape as plastic ones, so preexisting vending machines can take them fine.

umbraroze ,

Yeah, and I’m also very hopeful about the bio-plastics developments. Right now, a lot of carton cup/food packaging folks are developing bio-degradable/compostable food containers that try to replace petro-polymers. That’d solve a huge swath of plastic recycling problems.

Duamerthrax ,

Problem with the bio-plastics are that they’re still plastics. The micro plastic issue is because they degrade over time. The particles flake off of plastic goods over time. Plastic designed to do that might not solve anything unless they do it quick enough that there’s a very small amount of time they’re in the environment before degrading to their elemental components.

SirEDCaLot ,

Aluminum is really a perfect packaging material. Relatively cheap, easy to form through a number of methods, durable, and the recycling tech is damn near perfect. Something like 70% of all the aluminum humans have ever made is still in circulation because of that recycling. Glass comes in a close second. Neither are quite as easy or cheap as plastic though. And thus in pursuit of the almighty dollar, we poison the planet even further.

some_guy , in Oklahoma city approves $7M settlement for man wrongfully imprisoned for decades

Article doesn’t mention how he was determined to be innocent other than saying evidence that would show such had been deliberately hidden.

Seleni ,

On February 8, 1975, following the lineups, police arrested Simmons and Roberts, and they were charged with capital murder. However, Simmons testified that on December 30, 1974, he was in Harvey, Louisiana and spent the day playing pool with friends. His alibi was confirmed by four witnesses.

In January 2023, Simmons’s attorneys Joseph Norwood and John Coylefiled filed an amended application for post-conviction relief which cited the failure of the prosecution to disclose the police report which said that Brown had initially identified other two men and noted that in fact Brown had identified four other individuals during the eight lineup procedures. The motion also noted that in addition to the four witnesses who testified at the trial that Simmons was in Harvey, there were two other witnesses present who were to testify similarly but they did not after Simmons’s defense lawyer denied their testimony as cumulative. The petition included affidavits from five more people who said that they saw Simmons in Harvey at the time of the crime.

So convicted despite plenty of eyewitnesses saying he was somewhere else at the time. In addition, even the trial prosecutor thought he may have been wrongfully convicted:

In 1995, Robert Mildfelt, the trial prosecutor, wrote a letter to Simmons saying that the only witness [Brown] who identified him had wanted to think about the identification “overnight.” He wrote that Brown had described Simmons as more than six feet tall and over 200 pounds, “a physical description greatly different from Mr. Simmons [sic] stature at the time.

No word on why he put the man on trial with no evidence putting him at the scene and plenty of evidence putting him miles away. But really, we can all guess the reason.

casmael , in FDA wants to cut sodium in packaged and processed foods by about 20%

If I can’t buy a packet of crisps (‘chips’ for the yanks btw ;) ) and get a 10” pink Himalayan salt crystal in the bag, I don’t know what the world is coming to.

SolarMonkey , in FDA wants to cut sodium in packaged and processed foods by about 20%

As someone who has always been on a low-sodium diet, but who nonetheless has a hankering for processed food, thank fuck.

Everything has become so ridiculously salty, if you aren’t already used to the salt, that it’s largely inedible. It would otherwise be really good, but holy shit.

If we can get people consuming less salt in some places, they will want less in other places as well, maybe food as a whole will be less salty… that would be a win in every single way for everyone. Everyone who regularly eats with me tends to want less salt in their food overall as a result, so I know it works, and it doesn’t even take that long.

"You don’t have to imagine what a Kamala Harris presidency would be, because you’re living through that nightmare right now. And it is a nightmare. It’s a nightmare. And you’re going to stop inflation, but we’re going to have a crash, and we’re going to have a crash like a 1929 crash if she gets in. You saw a gentleman yesterday who got up one of the top analysts in the world, frankly, and, said that if Trump is elected, he predicts and he’s predicting you have a stock market crash like 1929. He also said the only time and the only reason the stock market has gone up, even though it had some bad moments recently. But I think we’ll take, I think we’ll take a substantial lead,” Trump said.

Could someone please hit me in the head with a brick so I can dumb down myself enough to try and understand what he said?

jpreston2005 , in Child sex-trafficking survivor who killed her abuser will finally learn her fate at sentencing hearing next week

In February 2018, four months before Volar’s death, a 15-year-old called 911 from Volar’s house, saying a man had given her drugs and was going to kill her. Officers found her in the street, drugged and shirtless. She alleged that Volar had been paying her for sex since she was 14. She warned them that he was also filming his abuse of other girls, including one named “Chrystal.”

Police found “hundreds” of videos of child sexual abuse in Volar’s home, including more than 20 he’d filmed himself. Some of those videos showed Kizer.

Volar was arrested and charged with child enticement and child sexual assault. But the same day, he was released. He remained free for months, and no criminal charges were officially filed.

Kenosha prosecutor Michael Graveley said that his office did not know the age of the girls in the videos, and delayed filing charges until they could determine whether they were minors.

But records obtained by The Post show that investigators described many of the girls being abused in Volar’s videos as appearing to be in their early and mid teens. One, they wrote, could have been as young as 12.

This story is also about how police and the prosecutor failed to do their job, and now two families are destroyed.

BertramDitore , in Between 2000-2022, there has been a 75% decline in youth incarceration. However, racial & ethnic disparities in youth incarceration & sentencing persist despite overall decrease in youth offending.
@BertramDitore@lemmy.world avatar

As with many stats over the last couple decades, crime is down pretty much across the board, but minorities are still getting screwed over for not being born white. Ain’t that just the story of America: progress for some white people, and continued discrimination, hatred, mistrust, and disproportionately unfair treatment for just about everyone else.
