Yup I’m a quarter white, and watching my racist school system sit me down and tell me I couldn’t put white on my SAT survey was eye opening. They were so concerned that they needed to see pictures of my parents and have written proof of my heritage.

Animated_beans ,

I was so hoping you were going to say that they discouraged you from putting white so that it opened you up for diversity-based scholarships. I am so disappointed to hear that was not the case. What they did is really messed up.

@ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world avatar

I gotta say I never understood the whole not trying them as adults thing.

I get that kids brains aren’t fully developed and that can lead them to do some morally apprehensive things but that just sounds like a bullshit excuse. That’s an excuse meant to be used for shit like stealing a candy bar or mild vandalism not beating someone to death.

Honestly I think the parents of the child should also end up with legal ramifications. You raised a piece of shit now you get to deal with the consequences.

cynthorpe ,

Every kid who commits adult crimes should be charged as an adult.

JohnyRocket ,

What about the case of a 10yo killing its abusive neo nazi father? Does the child fully understand the consequences of what it did, or did it just want the abuse to stop?

That child got as many years jailtime as it was old at the time of the killing.

Without clarification on what you mean by “adult crimes”, this is basically just saying “eliminate the juvenile justice system and feed the children to the sharks”.

cynthorpe ,

Felonies. Let’s just use that as the line.

monsieur_hackerman ,

How about violent felonies? In amerikkka its a felony to be black in certain areas.

cynthorpe ,

It may seem like that based on police behavior, but that isn’t true.

cynthorpe ,

todd_bonzalez ,
@todd_bonzalez@lemm.ee avatar

You fundamentally don’t understand the purpose of the juvenile justice system, you’re just interested in the most punitive system possible. That is the system we already have, and we’re one of the worst in world at it. There’s no good argument for making the system even worse by cracking down on children specifically.

cynthorpe ,

No, I understand it. I just don’t agree with you.

Kids who kill on purpose, and not in self defense, deserve to be treated like any other human.

Additionally, the parents should share in a good portion of then penalty.

Obviously each case has its own circumstances, so we shouldn’t throw the book at every one.

The kids in question were very much aware of what is right and wrong.

Zron ,

You want your cake and to eat it too.

Either a 17 year old is old enough to control themselves and skills be tried as an adult, in which case they’re ills enough to be responsible for their actions. Or, a 17 is too immature, and their parent’s are responsible for their behavior.

mctoasterson , in Vice President Harris chooses Tim Walz as running mate.

Purely strategically, it is an absolutely braindead move to not pick Shapiro. 538 has done a lot of work recently showing the likelihood that whoever wins PA will almost certainly win the election. So why would she decline to select the PA candidate with 60+% approval in that state?

aleph , (edited )
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

You can bet they have their polling data that says otherwise. Shapiro was a deeply controversial pick who could have killed a lot of the enthusiasm, and he only helps in one individual swing state. Waltz Walz has broad demographic appeal, so they presumably weighed up both and decided that he was the better bet.

tiefling ,

Shapiro is a huge Zionist who would’ve absolutely tanked her support with young people. He literally volunteered with the IDF and stands by his statement that a two state solution is impossible since Gazans are too “battle minded”

Walz is more neutral on Gaza and overall more progressive

WatDabney , in J. D. Vance Wants to Gut Biden’s Consumer Protections

No surprise there.

More precisely, undoubtedly, the people and corporations that have given him big piles of money want to gut consumer protections.

It’s really very simple - the billionaires and the corporations want to take the US back to at least the 1950s, and preferably the 1880s. Their goal is to institutionalize a plutocratic autocracy under which they’ll be free to strip mine the mountains and clearcut the forests and drill baby drill and spew pollution everywhere with no expectation of social responsibility, so they’ll be entirely free to keep all of the profits to pay for their lives of grotesque privilege while we’ll be reduced to just being additional resources for them to exploit, with no liberties, no freedoms and no say in anything.

That’s why they bankrolled Project 2025, why they bought the Supreme Court and why they’re backing Trump and Vance (and the MAGA Republicans broadly). Each one of them is intended to play a role in destroying democracy and implementing autocracy, all toward the same goal - the plutocratic dream world in which everything is bent toward enriching the few at the expense of the many - of elevating the few on the backs of the many, and not just essentially by happenstance, as is the case already, but officially and by design.

Class war isn’t coming - it’s already here. The rich are already fighting it, and they’re winning.

dhork ,
  • the billionaires and the corporations want to take the US back to at least the 1950s, and preferably the 1880s.

Some of them are gunning for pre-1860, before the War of Northern Aggression…
