People can barely afford what is considered essential these days. Jobs are hard to find, but no one wants to work. Layoffs happening in every large business to cut costs. Profit margins and infinite growth have become congressional priority. Owning your own home is a dream becoming more and more intangible. They make these articles every so often and they’re often disconnected with the struggles of the lower and middle classes, asking a question with obvious answers. Most people without kids are a few paychecks away from bankruptcy and you want them to be excited about parenthood?

It’s the law that you need to pay taxes whether you’re here legally or not, which means we specifically create pathways for people who are here illegally to pay their fair share. This I heard before, but don’t understand. If they send in their itin do they also send in their personal information like name and address when they pay taxes?
I would wager it’s more about the added revenue than concern over authoritarianism, haha, but that’s very interesting that they don’t report it to homeland security.

The article is paywalled so I can’t read it fully. But it sounds like the taxes are coming from indirect taxes (fuel etc.). Where did you get the idea that they are stealing an SSN to pay taxes? Where did you read it?
Many jobs require an SSN so if you want to work you need a stolen or fake SSN. Many employers don’t care if you are illegal as long as you have an SSN and they can say that they checked.

Hope it doesn’t hit you. There are so many long-term consequences for people who got COVID-19 in the first couple of waves. My father-in-law caught it early (long before there were vaccines), and long COVID has wrecked him. He went from being one of the strongest, most active guys I’ve ever met to being on oxygen - probably for the rest of his life.
I’ll never, ever forgive Donald Trump for his massive, incompetent bungling of the pandemic response. It resulted in so many unnecessary deaths, and many more ruined lives.
Still happens now. I read a study a month ago examining cognitive deficits in the august 2022-august 2023 cohort and they found similar results to this one.
But capitalism said we should pretend covid is a cold so here we are.
Worst part is that if the anti vax/mask idiots didn't get a platform, the quarantines wouldn't have lasted as long AND might have had a real shot of eradicated Covid
I remember hearing at the beginning of the year that the current strains were more dangerous and more infectious than the original, we just didn’t hear anything about it because, surprise, the vaccines work.
Vaccines work, but they don’t prevent long covid. The National academy of science and medicine report found that they reduced the prevalence of Long COVID from 12% to 10% of individuals with a positive test at 6 months.
Which is good, but far from revolutionary. In fact, the same report found that the majority of people with long COVID have been vaccinated (which makes sense, since most people have been vaccinated).
The NASEM report took all the studies done on the subject and provided a meta analysis for the conclusions. Which is based on data for over 100’000 patients.

As of Thursday, the Harris team was still actively vetting potential candidates. “They’re watching the J.D. Vance experiment go horribly wrong and they want to be sure they’re doing their due diligence,” a longtime Democratic operative told the Daily Beast.
The JD Vance Experiment sounds like a B-grade horror flic.
Whoever Harris ends up picking for the ticket VP should immediately and loudly call for scheduling a VP debate with Vance. Make them squirm and come up with more excuses for ducking yet another debate.
Plus, he’s convinced he “doesn’t need the votes” to win, so why give up on any VP pick? If he’s going to push fake electors and sew chaos to win, he doesn’t need popular opinions or people.
Honest question: What free fall? It seems the polls have barely moved beyond the margin of error, even if that subtle shift is in Harris’s favor. Am I missing out on Republicans criticizing Vance? I’ve really only heard it coming from the left.
At the time, it was my prediction and sense of things.
Now I believe it’s a bit more established. Free fall may be strong wording, but compared to feeling like he had it locked up… This is vastly different.
