Some national security experts even muse about whether the U.S. government should declare that it will not bargain for the release of anyone who disregards warnings against visiting Russia, Iran, North Korea and other high-risk countries.
At this point, I’m in favor of this. If you’re visiting Russia or North Korea (or Iran or Belarus) in the year 2024, it shouldn’t be the responsibility of the US state department to rescue you.
It’s not like Italy or South Africa or Brazil or New Zealand (or even the more autocratic European countries Hungary and Türkiye) are going to snatch up Americans as bargaining chips. It’s just a very short list of totalitarian states that you’d have to be an idiot to visit anyways.
I won’t say I 100% disagree, but it is a hard thing. It’s like the Coast Guard rescuing someone when they ignored every warning and put themselves in danger - it’s like yeah they definitely shouldn’t do that but also if you have the capacity to rescue them, and if you don’t they will literally die on your watch while you sit at home. I get the idea of saying fuck it and going and bailing them out, even if it is costly to do it.
It’s good for US journalists to go into authoritarian countries and report, just like they do for war zones and other dangerous places. It’s bad for US Marines to hear all this stuff about putting their life on the line for their country when they know they are Marines just sitting in Russian prison and the US isn’t doing a thing to try to get them out (whatever stupidity it was that wound up getting them put there).
I think it’s also kind of national pride - like it makes us look like chumps if there are Americans sitting in prison that shouldn’t be there and we’re just not doing anything about it.
Like I say I won’t say I 100% disagree with you but there are other factors involved than just whether or not the person put themselves at risk on their own.

If anyone wants help going vegan, I’d be happy to help. Even if it’s infeasible to get enough people in the world to stop eating animals fast enough to avert the next pandemic, there is evidence that people who eat plant-based have better outcomes from getting sick, as well as just getting sick less in general. Not to mention getting animal products out of your homes reduces one of the vectors through which pathogens can spread. So at the very least you’d be giving yourself your own best chance (just keep in mind it’s no replacement for vaccinations!)
It seems like a stupid statement that deserves to be made fun of, which it is, but it’s also indicative of one of the dark parts of the conservative mindset. There’s the bigotry of course, but there’s another layer on top of that. It’s like, since you are obviously one of the good true Americans (a straight white male, naturally), it is beneath you to submit to being ruled by one of those “others.”
Submission to a weak inferior sub-human leader is a weak and cowardly act. It is also an insult to your fellow nobles, so you are betraying yourself and “your people” by voting for somebody who is clearly not the right type of person.
Repeat and reinforce this shit over years and decades, make it part of your group identity, and you get things like “better a Russian/felon than a Democrat” (because democrats love being cucks for “diverse” people obviously) and a deep-seated visceral reaction to somebody who is an other in so many ways. A woman AND multiple nonwhite races, oh my!
Source: am straight white male who grew up in religious conservative area and had to work to shed all the tribalism and anger and negativity. (It’s part of the wider problem of so many conservatives defining their identity by the things they hate)
It’s almost like exploiting and killing trillions of sentient beings just so you can have five minutes of mouth pleasure is an inexcusably shitty thing to do and has its consequences. Let’s keep it up /s
Seriously, most zoonotic diseases and antibiotic resistance could be prevented entirely if we’d simply stop doing the most absurdly cruel things to animals. You should be vegan and be lobbying your governments to end subsidies to animal agriculture and replacing it with subsidies for other things we can eat.
Dude is a scumbag, but I think it’s pretty easy to understand that what he says on a podcast, where he’s promoting himself, and what he said to his child are probably not verbatim. We use hyperbole all the time. I might describe to a coworker a conversation with a client where I say, “And I was like, what the fuck do you expect?!” I obviously didn’t use profanity in that exchange and I obviously wasn’t super sarcastic to the client.
This one is a clickbait headline framing something that has poor optics as though it is literal fact when it’s almost certainly paraphrasing. He probably said something more like, “Son, please be quiet,” and the “shut the hell up” bit is describing the intensity of his emotion (and not in a hostile way, even).
