Corkyskog , in The Most Expensive Farm Bill Ever Is Stalled, Holding Back Important Funds Aimed at Combating the Climate Crisis

Given inflation, wouldn’t ine expect every farm bill to be “the most expensive ever”

Tier1BuildABear , in The Only Kind of “Political Violence” All U.S. Politicians Oppose
@Tier1BuildABear@lemmy.world avatar

The only kind they ALL oppose, apparently, is against Republicans. When it’s against Democrats the Republicans cheer.

Cheradenine , in Thailand's economy: factory closures due to cheap Chinese imports with job losses jumping by 80% within one year

bangkokpost.com/…/chinese-made-elephant-pants-fac…

A vendor in Bo Bae market in Bangkok said the Chinese pants have been popular among visitors for more than a year now as they were a lot cheaper, so the government needed to impose an import tax to help Thai manufacturers.

This is not in any way to be construed that wearing elephant pants is OK, it is not

Etterra , in A Trump Ally Is Training 75 Armed Citizens. Is That a Militia?

That sounds an awful lot like a militia to me.

BaalInvoker , in Brazilian Instagram influencer jailed for trafficking and slavery

Correction: she was condemned for 8 years. She was already jailed since 2022

Luvs2Spuj , in Missouri execution plans move forward despite prosecutor trying to overturn murder conviction

Judges ruled that they do not have the procedural authority to withdraw the execution order at this time.

I’m going to suggest the system might not work.

nulluser ,

It’s bureaucracy. The hearing is well before the scheduled execution, and it sounds likely that the hearing will vacate the conviction, from what I read. The court is just saying that there’s an established process for this and the lawyers just need to follow that process.

ETA: Not to say that our legal system isn’t horribly broken, because it is. Just saying that my interpretation of this case is that Marcellus is just a few dotted i’s and crossed t’s away from being a free man.

snooggums ,
@snooggums@midwest.social avatar

Assuming he is not guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, each additional day on death row is an affront to justice.

The courts need to speed up the process, which is what the prosecutor is basically asking for by not wanting to wait.

catloaf ,

The governor can almost certainly grant a stay of execution until this is resolved, too.

FlyingSquid ,

Unfortunately, the governor of Missouri is a criminal- missouriindependent.com/…/stinks-quite-a-bit-mike…

And almost all his policies suck. Many of them are just cruel. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Parson#2020_election

Oh, and you know who’s criminal conviction he did meddle with? missouriindependent.com/…/gov-mike-parson-faces-b…

Eldritch ,

Yup, gubna droopy dawg was always terrible. During the pandemic. When the vaccine started rolling out it should have gone to population centers and first responders. It went to Timbuktu. Because the population centers were blue. Vulnerable people and first responders had to make cross state treks trying to get the vaccine. The cities and urban areas were some of the last areas to get it. Because for him, racism and cruelty were the point.

ShaggySnacks ,

Because for him, racism and cruelty were the point.

That’s Conservativism in a nut shell.

maxinstuff , in Largest UK public sector trial of four-day week sees huge benefits, research finds
@maxinstuff@lemmy.world avatar

This old chestnut again.

It’s always some government department or tech company sitting on a pile of VC money.

Easy to make it work when the people were barely working in the first place, and with no competitive pressure.

Let’s see it at a construction project with a real deadline, or at a business in any kind of competitive industry.

Does anyone actually think that day 5 of a work week has a zero or even negative productivity value?

hikaru755 ,

Does anyone actually think that day 5 of a work week has a zero or even negative productivity value?

The rationale is that productivity increases a lot on the remaining four days if employees can actually relax and get private shit done over a 3 day weekend. I do see that this is probably gonna work differently for things like factory line workers, but for office jobs I can totally see this work

Etterra , in The Only Kind of “Political Violence” All U.S. Politicians Oppose

It’s unheard of

So you’ve never picked up a history book, I see. There’s a few obscure guys who would disagree with your assertion. I’ll list them off, but I doubt you’ll recognize any of the names.

  • Andrew Jackson
  • Abraham Lincoln
  • James Garfield
  • Theodore Roosevelt
  • William McKinley
  • John F. Kennedy
  • Ronald Reagan
  • William Taft
  • Herbert Hoover
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt
  • Harry Truman
  • Gerald Ford
  • George W. Bush
  • Barack Obama

Don’t feel bad, I wouldn’t expect you to have heard of any of them.

You forgot a couple of senators including JFKs younger brother. But yeah, super obscure names, Im suprised someone else online knows about these.

FlyingSquid , in China, United Arab Emirates (UAE) hold joint air force drills in Xinjiang - where China has arbitrarily detained up to a million Muslims, according to rights groups
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I guarantee you that the Emirs take the bigoted stance that Uyghurs aren’t “true” Muslims, so it’s acceptable.

No one more willing to compromise their principles than the people in charge of a country based on theocratic ones, even a somewhat less oppressive one relative to the region like the UAE.

sunzu ,

Arab solidarity is a fucking joke... I don't get their cultural situation tbh but how they handled refugee crisises, Palestinians and now this...

Money changers and rent seekers for ya.

S491 ,

They sold out the cultural and religious values of their ancestors who fought for independence, for the continuation of the wealthy and luxurious lifestyles they currently lead.
