Burstar , in Oklahoma public schools leader orders schools to incorporate Bible instruction
@Burstar@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

This is all a blatant attempt to rile up the Right. They know this BS is unconstitutional and start the crap just in time for the inevitable court cases to strike then down around voting time. It’s all about getting that outrage boiling

reddig33 ,

Taking the fight all the way to the Supreme Court (where they should lose) costs money. The idiot voters that support this nonsense are sacrificing everyone’s tax dollars to this altar. Meanwhile they don’t have funds to pave roads, etc.

Naboo_calls_for_aid ,

At first I thought, nah, they sincerely believe it’s best and would love to be a martyr. But it’s June, you’re 100% correct, this won’t make it into a classroom.

“Today class, we’ll look at the christian bible’s book of Genesis and its creation myth. We’ll refer back to our science class last week about life on Earth containing Carbon 14, and how it can be used to accurately date living things and how wrong the Genesis is. We’ll be comparing this to other creation myths such as the Greek and Norse versions.”

jordanlund ,

You don’t even have to go that far:

“Here’s a simple question… ‘Which came first? People? Or animals?’”

Genesis 1 - Animals
Genesis 2 - People

🤔

Sanctus , in It’s the economy, stupid. Here’s what you need to know about it for the presidential debate
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

What’s your thoughts on the debate, Ozma? You have a pretty different outlook than I do so I’m interested. Good? Bad? Footgun for one or the other?

return2ozma OP ,
@return2ozma@lemmy.world avatar

I think most voters have already made up their mind by now. If Trump shuts his mouth and “acts presidential” he will “win” the debate. If Biden can appear alert and well-spoken, he will win.

The downside for Biden I see are for those voters who haven’t paid attention to politics recently. He’s been declining in mental clarity lately and comparing pictures/video of him just from the start of his presidency he “looks” really old now. One of the most stressful jobs in the world ages you rapidly. Those voters could see Biden now and think “what the hell happened to him?”

The downsides for Trump… motions at everything The bar is extremely low. If he comes off as loud and interrupting or playing the victim, the Haley voters/old Republicans could be turned off.

Sanctus ,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Actually pretty close to what I think, plus the possibility of any tiny slip up being ate up by the media.

This is off topic but imagine if we had two Gen X candidates up there. Around early to mid forties. We might actually have a worthwhile debate that doesn’t come off as “Grandpas are fighting again and they want us to hear their presentations” but without the cuteness of a gay old couple.

return2ozma OP ,
@return2ozma@lemmy.world avatar

The media is foaming at the mouth for some slip up they can sensationalize. If it was Gen X, Beto would be jumping on top of podiums.

Sanctus ,

I know most of us agree, but I’d give a lot to not have the country dick punching each other over two extremely elderly men. My grandfather fucking died at their age.

Do we have a new one yet?

silence7 OP ,

No, not yet. There will probably be one in September or October.

Perfect timing for our kids to bring home the latest variants and infect us before we get the updated vaccine. Idiotic.

otp ,

Idiotic? Lol

Do you have a better strategy?

Zachariah ,
@Zachariah@lemmy.world avatar

Make the updated vaccine available in August maybe?

There are plenty of vaccines that kids are required to have before entering a classroom. I’d say this one is a good candidate to add to that list.

Ghostalmedia , (edited )
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Scientists look at the historical peaks from the last years, then they work back from that targeted date by adding in the many months needed to do trials, manufacturing, etc. Good thing is that, with mRNA technology, that time window is actually much better that it used to be for the older tech we’ve used for flu viruses in the past.

It’s never going to be perfect, but as long as you had last year’s booster, as the article mentioned, you’re much less likely to get seriously ill.

Predicting when next year’s peaks will drop is like predicting next years rainfall. You can get close, but it’s never going to be perfect. (Not the greatest analogy, since rain doesn’t mutate, and umbrellas don’t require months of human trials. Ohh well)

These are smart people working on this stuff. If they could have had an updated vaccine ready to go for any unexpected peak, they would.

Zachariah ,
@Zachariah@lemmy.world avatar

I sure hope so.

otp ,

Make the updated vaccine available in August maybe?

This is kind of like saying the police should shoot the criminal before it commits a crime, and before they know who the criminal is.

It’s not idiotic to do the best alternative when the ideal thing to do is impossible.

derf82 , (edited ) in The Supreme Court rules that state officials can engage in a little corruption, as a treat

People are way overreacting to this. This decision was 100% about a federal statute. Unaffected are the MANY, MANY state and local laws preventing state and local government employees from taking gifts.

Edit: for y’all downvoters, even the linked article states

In any event, the decision in *Snyder *is narrow. It does not rule that Congress could not ban gratuities. It simply rules that this particular statute only reaches bribes.

barsquid ,

What state’s jurisdiction covers DC?

derf82 ,

This case isn’t about a fed, it’s a local official.

There are other rules governing most federal employees. This is only one specific federal criminal law.

Valmond , in New Covid Shots Recommended for Americans 6 Months and Older This Fall

Is there newer vaccines than those in uh 2020-21?

silence7 OP ,

Yes, they’ve been updating the vaccine every year to match currently-circulating virus strains. This is about an additional update coming out this fall.

Pretty much the same thing is done with flu vaccines, where you need a periodic update for it to be effective.

HubertManne ,

I don't get why the shots cannot be combined. They talked about it and then nothing ever seem to materialize.

Stovetop ,

Moderna has their combined vaccine currently in clinical trials.

would love to get just one shot this fall.

Yup. Updates every year, just like flu vaccines. The virus mutates and immune wanes over time.

Multiple cops have openly admitted in person to me that they use it for compliance where force isn’t justified. “Move along or you’re about to become disorderly”.

FireTower OP ,

There’s a few like that and ‘Breach of Peace’ clearly designed as a catch all for the “It never occurred to us someone would do that” scenarios.

It’s definitely rife for abuse, even if it is often used for more banal things.

frankspurplewings , in 75 tons of illegal fireworks seized in Los Angeles area, largest fireworks bust in California history

I live in socal and it’s super dry right now and HOT. The next city over is doing a “fireworks and night of destruction” tomorrow. I know it’s unlikely but I hope their fireworks were in that seizure.

I’m all down for a night of destruction, but the fireworks right now is suchhh an easy way to start a wild fire. There’s already been a few small ones this past month.

Zorsith ,
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It’s crazy to me that fireworks can even be shipped to California, let alone actually used in-state, with how many wildfires they’ve caused. I genuinely would not trust people with them at this point

And i don’t mean “mailed” or “trucked”, I mean “turn that ship north and go the long way fuckers, not in this port” shipped.

Would be better if some holiday around February or so, at the end of the winter, was when the “big fireworks holiday” was.
