girlfreddy , in Black women say an Amtrak project threatens their Baltimore neighborhood’s homes — and children
@girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

“Of all of the 14 options that they say they considered, all 14 ran through predominantly Black communities.”

Yeah, that’s a problem.

evasive_chimpanzee ,

The problem is that the current tunnel has a sharp curve, and to make that curve less sharp, they need to increase the radius. That puts the path of a good new tunnel under a new neighborhood, which happens to be Black because most Baltimore neighborhoods are. Those 14 options are likely all under the same neighborhood.

girlfreddy ,
@girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

But the current tunnel is under a white neighborhood. So why can’t they build another tunnel there instead?

evasive_chimpanzee ,

The current tunnel is a relic from a long time ago when trains were slower, and there were competing train lines that had to try and fit through baltimore where they could. If you look at a map of the train line, it actually sharply curves out of the way of that currently Black neighborhood to go under the currently white neighborhood. This means the top speed is 30 mph. Under the new plan, they could hit 100 mph.

There are other problems with the current tunnel, mainly just down to being old, and those you could fix by redoing it in the same spot, but that wouldn’t fix the speed issue, because the speed is governed by the curvature (and grade).

ealoe ,

What a nonsense article. Try to draw any curved mile-long line through Baltimore that doesn’t run through a predominantly black community, I’ll wait. There are unfortunately plenty of real racial issues to deal with, this NIMBYism posing as racial equity is just a distraction.

Vaping, handjob - tomato, tomahto.

cmbabul ,

If any of us just vaped in a theater we would probably be asked to leave but it wouldn’t be a big deal. It somehow seems like it’s worse because an elected official should behave better than my dumb ass 8 beers deep at a dive bar bathroom.

Obviously the exhibitionism is even trashier and more upsetting

Cosmonauticus ,

I personally have no issue with her giving an ole fashion in public. My problem is all the other dumbass shit she says and does.

She shouldn’t be an elected official because she has the intelligence of a moldy cabbage. Not because she chokes chickens in a general audience

Zaktor ,

Not even mentioned in the article! In what world does the author live that “vaping” was the scandal that prompted her to flee her district? Conservatives couldn’t care less that she was being rude with vape smoke at a play.

FlyingSquid ,

Some of them probably think she should have blown the vapor cloud directly into the faces of the children she was vaping around.

    The lines were redrawn. Therefore she fled because she knew couldn’t win since she won the last election by a mere 500+ votes.

    Zaktor ,

    It’s literally the first line of the summary. There was a district that most closely matched her previous one, but she’s running in a district she doesn’t live in because it would be easier to win.

    You literally started the argument you’re now upset about. For some reason you thought it was important enough to tell me I was wrong, but after people told you your interpretation is wrong (or at best, in your evaluation, pointless) you’re suddenly wondering why we’re even talking about it.

    You didn’t read the summary and felt compelled to make a point no one else here or in political coverage agrees with, just tuck your tail and slink away.

    GoofSchmoofer , in America’s housing crisis continues to worsen, renters are struggling more than homeowners, report says
    @GoofSchmoofer@lemmy.world avatar

    What frustrates me is there doesn’t seem to be anyone in a position to promote change to this problem that is really talking about it. They may pay it lip service but nothing beyond that.

    TubularTittyFrog ,

    It’s a national problem, but policies that affect housing are mostly local. So you need to override local control with state/federal policy, or convince a 50,000 municipalities to change their laws.

    And the few states that have passed reforms for zoning, etc. are getting sued to shit in court by the city/towns.

    This problem was 50 years in the making, it would take more than 50 years to fix.

    GoofSchmoofer ,
    @GoofSchmoofer@lemmy.world avatar

    I totally agree this isn’t a easy fix and it will take decades to change but I feel that should be a challenge for the US to start making the change not a reason to keep the status quo.

    anindefinitearticle ,

    Sadly, I am aware. It really sucks.

    UnderpantsWeevil ,
    @UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world avatar

    The most common target of antitrust litigation has been unions.

    Desistance ,
    @Desistance@lemmy.world avatar

    No. You make it so that they cannot hold single family dwellings period unless for the purpose of listing and selling them to non-corporate individuals.

    Tinks ,

    There are reasons why a business might actually need or benefit from having a single family dwelling in a way that aligns with their business. For instance a local theatre company owns two large homes here so that when traveling cast come for shows they have somewhere to house them without spending exorbitantly on hotel rooms for weeks at a time, and the cast get a more comfortable stay. The homes are typically occupied at least a portion of each month, and everyone involved benefits.

    It’s reasons like these I wouldn’t want to put a total and complete ban on businesses owning single family homes, but in my opinion there should be a reasonable business justification for it and it needs to be very limited.

    I wish they’d be used to help people with agonizing depression and help them to feel like a person again. Not so people can just abuse them to get high.

    cheese_greater ,

    You can’t always seperate all these things out. I do it rarely because its sort of a severe experience (physically, def gonna throw up at least once and the pee-inhibition is terrible, plus walking and eyes are weird) but I need a reset every now and again when I get in a rut. It can also be pleasently disorienting in a way that makes you really question some of the insignificant sideshows we get distracted by.

    It realy shouldn’t matter altho I agree that people shouldn’t use it as a party drug. It should be more like one of those glass windows with a defribillator and you smash it when you need it but its seen as a pain in the ass to access for frivolous means.

    But everyone should have easy access and not in ways that maximize side effects or difficulty. Its the biggest shame in the world that so many lives and time were lost because of dumb drug war propaganda that arbitrarily restricts people in such a silly way.

    Rediphile ,

    I think allowing people who abuse them to, well, abuse them is an acceptable byproduct of also helping meaningfully treated various other peoples depression.

    It’s not one or the other.

    Eh, ket destroyed my friend’s life for almost a decade. He was shooting it, hooking to afford gear and sucking his landlord’s dick to have somewhere to stay. Broke into his mum’s house and stole anything of value. Did time, cleaned up, and is now sober. I think if we’re going to open up these drugs for free use, we need to build effective support systems so that recreational use doesn’t turn into abuse to the extent that its destroying the lives of the abuser and those of everyone around them.

    Rediphile ,

    Okay, but didn’t that happen in an environment where ket was not legally available for people who may be able to benefit from it? Like…that shit already happens. And yeah it sucks.

    Do you not feel he would have benefited from it being legal when he attempted to seek treatment? Might he have had less motivation to steal and suck his landlords dick if the illegal market didn’t make the drugs so cost prohibitive?
