TechNerdWizard42 , in Russian government accused of leaving citizens vulnerable to attacks like Sunday's gun rampages by turning the state's security apparatus on Kremlin critics instead of terrorist threats

Wow this is such propaganda… How many mass shootings does the USA have again???

NOT_RICK ,
@NOT_RICK@lemmy.world avatar

What if I told you two problems can exist at the same time?

sunzu ,

This was not a "mass shooting" US style...

This is likely linked to Dagestan's desire to leave the Russia Federation.

People of Northern Caucuses are not Russian ethnically or culturally nor do they want anything to do with their colonial daddy.

Russia is weakened by the war in Ukraine so these people are activating. Good for them. Fuck Russia.

Hopefully insurgency takes hold.

Maybe don’t write good for you in response to churches and synagogues getting attacked? It’s not like these guys went after legitimate military targets (with the exception of a police checkpoint).

These attackers may very well be tied to Isis; there is absolutely nothing good about them other than the fact that this is a problem for the Kremlin.

Also, Russia really fucked these people, so they are 100% justified in taking arms against their colonizer.

Surprised this only now starting but hey, fuck Russia!

Zaktor , in On Politics: Brad Lander's scheming shows Eric Adams' weakness

Could Adams actually lose? The short answer is yes, even if it’s historically difficult to oust an incumbent mayor. Adams only managed to win the 2021 Democratic primary by fewer than 10,000 votes. Kathryn Garcia almost became mayor, and a large swath of the city also voted for Maya Wiley, the leading progressive candidate.

And yet centrists everywhere acted like it was a landslide victory demonstrating a new mold for Democrats nationwide.

cmbabul , in Autopsy report rules 12-year-old's death at camp for troubled adolescents a homicide

Even before I was an adult and learned how terrible these places are whenever they’d show up on some daytime tv show as a solution to a kid in trouble with the law or “headed down a bad path”, it was plane as day they were just abuse centers. My parents are far from perfect but there’s no way either of them would’ve sent any of us to one regardless of what we were doing.

DadVolante ,

cmbabul ,

DadVolante ,
@DadVolante@sh.itjust.works avatar

Only because I turned 18. But it was nice, nonetheless.

I’m in my 40s, now. I still have nightmares about getting out back into a center. But I also have a strong sense of justice and sometimes compassion for strangers due to my time in those places.

Seeing people my age put their OWN kids into those places and lost me a friendship, recently. I see nothing good coming from those places

cmbabul ,

Obviously they are different levels and types of abuse, but I look at the friends I grew up in my local church with, who put their kids in the same church as soon as they can the same way. Like they weren’t talking about how fucked up it was less than 5 years ago.

I’m glad you are doing better and hope you can move past the trauma somehow! I wish you the best of luck!

moshankey ,

And I’ve worked in them. Trauma causing to both clients/ patients and staff (if they care). So much waste, fraud, and abuse. Just keeps happening. I am truly sorry.

HulkSmashBurgers , in Campaign aims to put ranked-choice voting to a referendum in Ithaca - The Ithaca Voice

Ranked Robin is a better choice than RCV.

STAR voting is a better option also.

RCV has it’s problems

nulluser OP , (edited )

RCV has the momentum and is infinitely superior to what we have now. Don’t let perfect be the enemy of much better.

Edit: And honestly, I’d be happy if a community chose one of the other options. I don’t care. They’re all better than what we have and we should be applauding every city, county and state that switches to any of them.

Trying to demonize one because you don’t think it’s perfect is just muddying the waters and subjecting us to decades of more of the shit sandwich we have now while we debate which alternative is flawless.

intelisense ,

We had the same arguments in the U.K. during the referendum to drop FPTP. Strangely, the people making those arguments on Reddit all disappeared the day after the vote. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I am convinced that was Russia!s proof-of-concept for what would become their information warfare against democracy.

OP, you are most likely genuine and good meaning, but understand that Russia, China, and many other bad actors want you to keep FPTP because it’s so much easier for them to manipulate elections. Any argument against change, even if said change is not perfect, is in their favour.

nulluser OP ,

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I am convinced that was Russia!s proof-of-concept for what would become their information warfare against democracy.

I find myself increasingly having to consider this possibility when I interact with people online. Are they well meaning, or are they actively trying to sabotage progress. Maybe they’re well meaning but have succumbed to the arguments of others actively trying to sabotage progress. 🤷

TheDemonBuer OP , in Analysis: The fertility crisis is here and it will permanently alter the economy | CNN Business
@TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world avatar

"A reduction in the share of workers can lead to labor shortages, which may raise the bargaining power of employees and lift wages — all of which is ultimately inflationary,” Simona Paravani-Mellinghoff, managing director at BlackRock, wrote in an analysis last year.

And while net immigration has helped offset demographic problems facing rich countries in the past, the shrinking population is now a global phenomenon. “This is critical because it implies advanced economies may start to struggle to ‘import’ labour from such places either via migration or sourcing goods,” wrote Paravani-Mellinghoff.

This is just mask-off capitalism. They want people to have a lot of babies, and/or large numbers of poor and desperate people migrating into the country, so that they have a constant, reliable source of cheap labor.

scytale ,

I knew even before I opened the article it’s gonna be about fewer babies = fewer workers. Remember folks, when an article cites the “economy”, it just means the businesses and industries’ profits.

ChocoboRocket ,

Paying workers more is inflationary, but raising the cost of goods because you control the supply chain is “business”

Basically, raising product costs to cover increased labour costs are bad because actual workers are getting that money instead of the wealthy capital class.

I wish people understood boycotting more. Sure 6 companies own everything, but remember when the cost of a barrel of oil went significantly negative because people weren’t driving for 2 weeks?

If people collectively decided they didn’t want to buy anything but the absolute necessary staples for a few months there would be an absolute catastrophe in the supply chain and they’d be forced to lower prices significantly.

They may not lower prices forever, but modern business is built entirely on supply chain logistics. If people stop buying anything, or buy things exclusively to return them we would see some serious changes

Talaraine ,

I've tried to convince people that if we can have a No Nut November, we ought to be able to put together a No-Sales September or something. These mentally defective executives would absolutely go back to taking care of the customer if this were a practice.

BubbleMonkey ,

We should definitely do November for it - holiday shopping and Black Friday specifically.

Hell, if we could just boycott Black Friday and the week before and after, which is the biggest retail spend of the year, we’d probably make a serious dent. They aren’t even good deals, but good luck convincing anyone to skip it who doesn’t already.

avidamoeba ,
@avidamoeba@lemmy.ca avatar

I’d like to put Simona’s mind at ease because economics research into the relationship between wages and productivity shows a casual link where higher wages increase productivity. That is, higher wages force firms to invest in technology, equipment and training in order to offset the increased labor cost.

slacktoid ,
@slacktoid@lemmy.ml avatar

You know what slows down inflation? An upper limit on the cost of goods. But hey im just a filthy commie.

iopq ,

frezik ,

slacktoid ,
@slacktoid@lemmy.ml avatar

Can i have your list of valid countries to choose from so that my answer doesn’t get disqualified for picking a third world country.

a maximum retail price exists for most if not all goods in India. And it helps slow down inflation.

frezik ,

India would be perfectly valid if it wasn’t experiencing high inflation just like everyone else. Which it is.

finimize.com/…/rbi-chief-urges-india-to-cut-infla…

You can’t fix inflation just by setting a max price. It leads to shortages or (more common in India’s case) retailers finding loopholes:

www.thehindu.com/opinion/…/article7452745.ece

slacktoid ,
@slacktoid@lemmy.ml avatar

Didn’t say it solves inflation. You cant stop a global phenomenon happening. You can ease it.

frezik ,

Here’s India’s inflation chart for the past few years: www.equentis.com/blog/wp-content/…/image-87.png

Here’s the US: fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MEDCPIM158SFRBCLE

They aren’t easing anything.

iopq ,

It doesn’t work because it’s a stupid idea.

If there’s a cap on the price of a type of good, then obviously only the lowest quality things get made. If you cap shoes to $10, they will only sell shoes imported from sweatshops.

If you specify exactly how something is made, like $20 for made in USA shoes, they will import it from a sweatshop and sew a logo on it in the US.

If you specify how much labor must be done in the US, there’s a chance nobody would bother since selling the $10 sweatshop shoe has better profit margins

slacktoid ,
@slacktoid@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah thats not how the prices are set tho so your entire premise and basis is stupid. Have a good day. Do some reading.
