Melkath , in Opinion: Long COVID is debilitating to me and 65 million other people. Where is the urgency to treat it?

You know, I still mask up and I still social distance where possible and I haven't gotten covid.

Maybe you should have just worn the damn mask, Karen.

Balios ,
@Balios@kbin.social avatar

Fuck off. A lot of people got sick because others were idiots, not because they behaved wrong. Masks are most effective when the sick person wears them, which you can't influence, way too many idiots got out even thought they felt sick and not every place in the world encouraged the use of the really effective FFP2/KN95 Masks. A lot of long-covid sufferers also got sick early on, before we even learned what they best measures would be to protect ourselves and others and before we had the vaccines that reduce the risk of suffering from it.

Melkath ,

No, you fuck off.

I don't disagree with your points, mostly, but I will put good money down on the fact that the sweeping majority of people who have had covid got it because they were full on anti-mask, or because they went to densely populated areas.

I guarantee you that those screaming the loudest about long term covid assistance are the anti-mask boomers who screamed the loudest about being made to wear a mask.

If you are going to completely sidestep my obvious point and engineer your own meaning for what I said, eat a dick.

Jesus these comments act like curing diseases is just a matter of attention and throwing money at it. Cancer still exists because it turns out science is actually really complicated. While we’ve made breakthroughs, they come at huge amounts of time and money (see KRAS G12D inhibitor).

Take fibrosis in the lungs post-COVID. That’s scar tissue. Your body magically stitched you up. The cells that were previously there for air exchange died, and are not coming back. Lungs don’t continually grow at adulthood. If they did, it would be prone to cancer, which is also going to be a huge risk if a treatment ever gets far enough to undo tissue fibrosis and stimulate proliferation of the existing cells in the lung. Not to mention they need instruction to form the alveolar structures (no way how they’re going to do that, they formed by budding in embryogenesis).

People think scientists are taking their sweet time on it, but don’t even have the patience to understand the problem in the first place.

athos77 , (edited )

My cousin was doing research into chronic fatigue syndrome (which shares a lot with some versions of long covid, and still isn't 'solved') back in the 1990's. It's going to take time.

Edit: "Today, the National Institutes of Health launched and is opening enrollment for phase 2 clinical trials that will evaluate at least four potential treatments for long COVID, with additional clinical trials to test at least seven more treatments expected in the coming months. Treatments will include drugs, biologics, medical devices and other therapies. The trials are designed to evaluate multiple treatments simultaneously to identify more swiftly those that are effective." - source

Nah, morons just get more and more comfortable to openly be morons. A trend that's going on for quite a while.

I remember him telling Philip Rosenthal that the reason he developed Pee-wee Herman was that Reubens had a horrible memory for jokes, and so he just built a persona that was inherently funny without them.

    Obviously, a brilliant move.

LightProtector , in Florida may become first state to accept a ‘classical’ alternative to the SAT and ACT

I don’t see SAT/ACT going anywhere. CLT may start being accepted as an alternative, but it’s not going to be taken except by the most hardcore red schools. Even then, it just doesn’t make sense since every college OOS uses the SAT/ACT. Good on DeSantis for doing…literally nothing helpful, again.

    Pheonixdown ,

Once the FL colleges accept it, watch for a push to only provide it in the high schools, then the average FL students end up only being able to apply in-state. The colleges get pushed more conservative, and FL ends up churning out “educated professionals” heavily and deliberately biased as conservatives.

oktoberpaard , (edited ) in Florida may become first state to accept a ‘classical’ alternative to the SAT and ACT

As a Western European casually reading headlines on social media, it’s mind boggling what’s happening now in Florida. From my outside perspective it seems like Florida is shaping up to be a fascist Christian state, with all kinds of laws and policies specifically made to target racial and sexual minorities and liberals. What’s next: religious minorities and intellectuals? I’m sure it must feel the same for a lot of you across the ocean. How is it possible that people like DeSantis are in power? Is it because of years of extreme polarization? Surely it can’t be that the majority in Florida is this intolerant and hateful, right? Do you think there is even the slightest chance that DeSantis will be the next president?

    Deadsheep ,

You only really need about a 3rd of the population to control things. These far right extremists are all testing the waters on how far they can go, and unfortunately the supreme court is corrupted to the point they’re starting to tear down our legal system. There is no accountability. Lower levels of government can strong arm their opponents out, enact illegal legislation, and rig it so they’ll never lose. It’s straight up fascism. It’s gotten so extreme because they’re reaching the tipping point of either being ousted or taking over full rule of the country. I’m desperately hoping the demographics are changing fast enough, and that people are seeing the catastrophy unfettered capitalism and greed brings, but it’s a fight that’s close enough to be very scary.

    Michaelmitchell ,

He probably won't make it out of Florida. Florida is the place where east coasters go to retire so it's full of 70 year old retirees. Them combined with venezuelan and cuban migrants who are rabidly anti-communist give him a solid fat right block that supports him in all this stupidity. Good thing is that you don't see those conditions outside of Florida where the average person is mildly disgusted by most of it.

    yata ,

He most likely won’t, but that is only because there are other equally awful extremist GOP candidates, most notably Trump, who are more popular in the party on a national level. Imagine what Trump would have been doing had he been governor of a state all these years.

The disease is not isolated to Florida in the slightest.

Cleverdawny , in As work begins on the largest US dam removal project, tribes look to a future of growth

I’m not sure how demolishing renewable energy sources is going to help protect the environment during a climate crisis.

For my two cents, demolish the last fossil fuel power plants in a country, and we can then start taking a look at hydroelectric dams to tear down for environmental concerns.
