Zaktor , in Columbia University president resigns after Gaza protests turmoil

Good riddance and should have been sooner. Not only did she personally order violence against her students and staff, resulting in a no-confidence vote from her faculty, but her heavy-handed response to the early low-key protest is what kicked off the more forceful campus protests across the country. It’s amazing that such a failure lasted as long as she did. The other resignees were pushed out after mistakenly treating a political witch hunt by actual antisemites like a good faith discussion, this lady actually massively failed at her job and is personally responsible for the “period of turmoil” at both her campus and across the country.

She could have just let students camp on the lawn with their signs until they got tired of it.

hate2bme , in "Double haters" who loathed Trump and Biden actually seem to like Kamala Harris, poll suggests

Not me, but I do like Walz. Wish he was running for president.

recklessengagement , in The big question touching a nerve this election: "Can my husband find out who I am voting for?"

As someone who’s worked multiple elections, your ballot is never tied to your name/ID. Even if someone broke into the box and stole the ballots, there’s no way to know whos is who.

When ballots are audited/recounted, its based on things like the number of ballots vs the number of recorded voters, the signature of the precinct officer, and the qualities of the ballot itself. No identifying informationm.

Dkarma ,

This is not even remotely true for mail in ballots. They are returned in an envelope that has your name, address and signature on it.

andrewta ,

Honest question : on mail in ballots even though you name is on the envelope, doesn’t the envelope get separated from the ballot? So there is no real way to know who voted for whom? @recklessengagement

tigeruppercut ,

My state mail in procedure is to send your ballot in an envelope without identifying info, and that envelope goes inside a larger envelope so they can verify you. I assume they separate it for counting later

joenforcer ,

I have worked elections too. Can confirm. The ballot is separated from identifying info once validated.

recklessengagement ,

True, but once they are recieved, they’re seperated from the identifying information. It’s not stored in a database somewhere.

The only time I’d argue this isn’t the case would be for provisional ballots, where they often will send you a letter after it gets processed.

Chocrates , in "Double haters" who loathed Trump and Biden actually seem to like Kamala Harris, poll suggests

The fuck do they have to give it such a negative name? I think a lot of people didn’t like either option, across a lot of different spectra of citizen.

So sad to see another person become a statistic in the fight against cancer. My heart goes out to her and her family.

I hate to make something like this political but Republicans in the senate just rejected a bipartisan bill that would have increased funding for finding a cure for cancer.

shalafi , in Biggest US grocery chain investigated over Uber-style surge pricing

We keep giving them money and they keep fucking us over! What are we to do?!

TommySoda ,

Unfortunately some people don’t have a choice. The only grocery stores near me are Kroger or Albertsons. I have to drive over an hour to get any other options.

But at the same time, even though I only shop for two, it might end up being cheaper to drive an hour and a half to Costco if shit keeps going the way it is. When you have to pay over $100 on less than a week of groceries, gas prices seem quaint in comparison.

JimSamtanko , in "Double haters" who loathed Trump and Biden actually seem to like Kamala Harris, poll suggests

I’m voting for the NOT TRUMP candidate until we fix this broken system and have better options. Couldn’t really stand Biden, but I was supporting the fuck out of that dude if it meant we could avoid the shit show that would be a Trump presidency.

I feel better with Harris, but still not ideal.

“I never vote for, only against.” – W.C. Fields in a rare serious moment.

Something I take to heart. I will never get a candidate who represents everything I stand for, but there will always be one who represents less of what I stand for than the other.

null ,

I saw something similar recently along the lines of:

Voting isn’t a love-letter to a candidate; it’s a chess move.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That’s a great way of looking at it.

Great quote. Also, love your username. SQL injection vibes.

Edit: Went in search of more info about this quote and thought I’d share what I found:

"A vote is a chess move, not a valentine."

until we fix this broken system

THIS. Campaign Finance & Election Reform is the most important single-issue in America right now because it impacts quite literally every other problem and the disenfranchisement and frustrations so many Americans feel with the system right ow.

  • Amidst this 2-Party System, we have no choice but to vote for the lesser-of-two-poor choices.
  • Between these two parties, only one party has actually advocated for fixing the system.
  • We need a Constitutional Amendment. It’s the only way.
  • This movement needs to be grassroots and built state-by-state.

The good news is that there is untapped bipartisan support for said initiative. We just need to ALL keep repeating this, which again, is easy because it can be injected into nearly every single political conversation.

Longer write-up for those interested.

I got put in silent lunch one time because I fell asleep during a guy describing his time in Japan as a teacher by my asshole homeroom teacher (she thought I was acting up because another teacher woke me up and she only saw that). That was unfair and I absolutely hated middle school, but this is a whole new level of fucked.
