    bradorsomething ,

    Its a game of bluff. China can make all the claims it wants, but the waterway is traditionally open navigable waters, and rules are basically “do you want to start a war to stake your claim?” You can find many recordings online of western ships passing through the strait, and a constant back and forth of;

    “Turn back, you are in chinese waters.”

    “This is the USS Fillintheblank, we are in International Waters performing a freedom of navigation exercise.”

    “We order you to turn back now.”

    “This is the USS Fillintheblank, we are in…”

    I live in des moines. The water was taken out of the river, and put right back in to flow downstream. That is what typically happens in to water.

    The did this in des moines because 80% or the power comes from wind making. Apple is building a large data center near my house. Google has one someplace as well. The large number of wind farms around the state make us a very attractive place for anyone who wants to use a lot of reporters energy.

    MS’ reports make a distinction between how much water was withdrawn from third-party systems (often municipal sources) and how much was consumed … meaning not all the water withdrawn was returned to the source.

    Thekingoflorda ,
    @Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world avatar

    What happens with the remaining water?

    Aliendelarge ,

    If this was potatbpe water from municple sources, it may well include things like drinking water, toilets, etc or it could have been sent out of a sprinkler or evaporative coolers.

    girlfreddy OP ,
    @girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

    According to page 6 of this PDF fact sheet MS uses third party sources, meaning municipal water systems, withdrawing 10,665 megaliters and discharging 4307 megaliters.

    1 megaliter = 1,000,000 liters 1,000,000 liters = 219,969.3 gallons

    Thekingoflorda ,
    @Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world avatar

    Yea I understood that, was just curious what happened with the water that wasn’t discharged

    girlfreddy OP ,
    @girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

    It was consumed, either through evaporation, sewage, drinking water, etc.

    JoBo ,

    Presumably it evaporates and returns to the water cycle? I don’t know, but it’s not like growing tomatoes and exporting the water within them. That water is staying local. But that doesn’t mean it returns to where it’s needed, when it’s needed. They’re putting a strain on the local water supply (flow) not necessarily the long-term stock.

    In 2022, a document from the West Des Moines Water Works said it and the city government “will only consider future data center projects” from Microsoft if those projects can “demonstrate and implement technology to significantly reduce peak water usage from the current levels” to preserve the water supply for residential and other commercial needs.

    They’re not doing that for fun.

    Thekingoflorda ,
    @Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world avatar

    Interesting, thank you for sharing. I assume it get’s put back into the water cycle, and it would require power to turn it into drinking water again.

    yes the whole nation is in jeopardy because some warmongers arent getting their promotions... if this is really the case, then the military is being mismanaged way worse than anyone knows.

    we could cut those positions outright, and 10,000 others, and still be the biggest assholes on the planet.

    dingus ,
    @dingus@lemmy.ml avatar

    I mean, that’s true, but the actual issue is that in the system as it currently exists, the entire reason Tuberville is doing this is to create empty vacancies, in hopes of stonewalling until the Presidential election. The entire plan is literally another attempt at a coup, just looking for ways to have a Republican administration put in a bunch of Yes Men in key positions, if they’re lucky enough to keep the House and win the Presidency. Having cronies in control of the military is no joke.

    While we would still indeed be the biggest assholes out there, with a military that would still outmatch much of the world, the difference if that if this is continued to be allowed, there is real risk of the “biggest asshole” military on the planet being controlled by an actual dictatorship, not the dog and pony show we call a “democracy.” A fascist dictatorship that wants to wipe women and minority rights off the map and take us back 100 years or more.

    I’m no fan of the milquetoast wimpy Democrats who watch the Republicans break rules all the time and are unwilling to play hardball themselves, but whinging while ignoring the literal rising threat of fascism that’s out there making plans to take power isn’t gonna help.

    So, to quote a great man, “You’re not wrong, Walter, you’re just an asshole.”

    Did I argue that they aren’t complicit or did I point out that what’s happening is literally part of a plan for an intended coup by the way more fascist of the two shitty parties?

    We can suck major balls and you can still live in fucking reality where if the Republicans succeed at this, they will be using the military to root out and murder people like you and me, just because they can.

    Democrats just want to be rich fuckwits above it all, but Republicans legit want to fucking hurt people, and ignoring that means you’d rather play pretend that we could just dismantle the military overnight. We can’t dismantle the military industrial complex we don’t have the political power. So in the meantime, let’s live in fucking reality and understand our own limitations shall we, hmm? Because acting like something we literally don’t have the power to do is something we should focus on while the fascists are at the gate is fucking nanners, to put it lightly.

    GiddyGap ,

    and no, i dont believe we have to spend 1t/per to be the worlds police. we as a country suck major ballls.

    I agree with that. That money would be much better spent on universal healthcare and universal college-level education.

    On the other hand, Tuberville’s reasoning is insanely backward and needs to be punished.

    NoneOfUrBusiness ,

    That's... Literally not the point. Usually you don't want your military to be controlled by people who wanna take over the government.

    NocturnalMorning ,

    We can be upset about more than one thing at once. Our military spending is out of control, and one person in congress should not be able to grind government functions to a hault.

    OP is right, this is just a veiled attempt to maintain vacancies in the hopes of getting a republican president.

    yes the whole nation is in jeopardy because some warmongers arent getting their promotions

    The whole nation is in jeopardy because these leadership positions are being held open until Trump is reelected in a rework of the Merrick Garland SC nomination. Which should be terrifying. Jan 6 failed in part because some of the military top brass (Miley) put oath before Trump.

    Read up on Project 2025 if you haven’t. These “unconnected events” are anything but. It’s a strategy.

    pjhenry1216 ,

    yes the whole nation is in jeopardy because some warmongers arent getting their promotions... if this is really the case, then the military is being mismanaged way worse than anyone knows.

    When you refuse to fill management positions, yes, it will become even more mismanaged. Moreover, this is still messing with people's pay and families as well. You can't really cut management positions in the military and expect it to function. Our readiness will absolutely be hindered.

    You can hate the army, but they're also one of the biggest suppliers of aid to other countries. Their logistics and planning help save more lives than you ever will, plus they save more lives than they actually ever take in combat.

    Holy crap when I saw the headline at first I thought it was an obit

    some_guy , in Nancy Pelosi: Democrat and ex-Speaker, 83, to seek re-election

    I’m in her district. This has given me a possibly-crazy idea. What if I registered to run against her? Hear me out.

    I don’t think that I could win. She’s been in the game for so long, I have no illusions. But, registering and announcing a campaign to challenge her might result in some national publication contacting me for a quote. I might be able to get a line in said publication and get people talking about it.

    “Nancy Pelosi should get out of the way of younger generations and let those who came after her have a seat at the table.”

    I’d appreciate feedback on the value of doing something like this. Also, the likelihood that it would have the desired outcome. Also, thoughts on how this might be done.

    I’ve been kicking this idea around since this morning when I first saw this. I’m increasingly thinking that it sounds like a good idea. Thoughts?

    OrteilGenou ,

    Here’s what you do, announce that you’re running, say your peace, and when you’re surfing that publicity wave, announce that you’re running for governor of California. No flaw!

    ArgentRaven ,

    I think the local DNC would have to “allow” it. Otherwise you’d run as something-other-than-Democratic.

    But all it would cost you is time, and maybe a small filling fee to find out.

    I say, go for it! It would at least shake up the geriatric incumbents a bit.

    BrianTheeBiscuiteer ,

    The local DNC could potentially work against you but they can’t stop you from running in the primary as long as you meet the requirements.

    ArgentRaven ,

    Awesome, that’s good to know! I just assumed they picked if there would be competition due to how some Republicans threatened to “primary” incumbents that didn’t fall in line.

    BrianTheeBiscuiteer ,

    Do it! As one of the most notable Democrats alive it’d be a near impossible task to unseat her, but maybe you get 20% of the vote and that’s not a terrible result. After that maybe someone more notable like a Mayor or state rep would run and maybe win. Shoot your shot!

    tallwookie ,

    “Nancy Pelosi should get out of the way of younger generations and let those who came after her have a seat at the table.”

    “Nancy Pelosi should get out of the way of younger generations and let those who came after her have a seat at the table.”

    Don’t stop with her. Make your platform about Glitch McConnell, Dianne “The Wraith” Feinstein, Chuck “Touch” Grassley, and every other member of Congress who can’t even claim to be a boomer because they were born before the end of WW2. Their generation built the America we have now; how’s it working out for y’all?

    merc ,

    Running in such a prominent campaign would probably make your life suck. Pelosi’s seasoned team would probably go through your entire life with a fine-toothed comb and spin anything remotely negative about you to make it seem like you were a serial killer. The Republicans, meanwhile, might throw money into supporting you without caring if you wanted their “help” just to make Pelosi’s life hell.

    There are probably already real challengers who actually want the job who you could support instead. If you donated to them and volunteered for them, they might make enough noise to at least get some headlines. And, you wouldn’t have to stick your own neck out.
