MicroWave OP , in Iran's Revolutionary Guard runs drill on disputed islands as US military presence in region grows
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

The Pentagon has said the deployment is “in response to recent attempts by Iran to threaten the free flow of commerce in the Strait of Hormuz and its surrounding waters." Some 20% of the world’s oil passes through the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the wider world and the U.S. views it as crucial to both its national security and keeping global energy prices stable.

autotldr Bot , in Striking writers and studios will meet this week to discuss restarting negotiations

This is the best summary I could come up with:

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Union leaders told striking Hollywood writers Tuesday night that they plan to meet with representatives for studios to discuss restarting negotiations after the first official communication between the two sides since the strike began three months ago.

The Writers Guild of America sent an email to members saying that the head of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents major studios, streaming services and production companies in negotiations, requested a meeting on Friday to discuss the resumption of contract talks.

It was not immediately known whether a similar overture was made to union leaders for Hollywood actors, who have been on strike since July 14.

Asked about the prospect of talks with either guild, a spokesperson for the AMPTP in an email said only that “We remain committed to finding a path to mutually beneficial deals with both Unions.”

Issues behind the strike include pay rates amid inflation, the use of smaller writing staffs for shorter seasons of television shows, and control over artificial intelligence in the screenwriting process.

The Deputy White House Counsel reiterated to Co-Conspirator 4 that there had not been outcome-determinative fraud in the election and that if the Defendant remained in office nonetheless, there would be “riots in every major city in the United States.” Co-Conspirator 4 responded, “Well, [Deputy White House Counsel], that’s why there’s an Insurrection Act.”

… they were planning to use the Insurrection Act to stomp any resistance to Trump staying in office. Full-on dictatorship-style military coup and mass arrests, or worse. (Not news, but still stunning to see it in writing in an indictment.)

What a bunch of lunatics. I wonder who Co-Conspirator 4 was.

Eastman or Clark I think.

Edit: it’s Clark. If you read the indictment conspirator #4 is “a justice dept offical”

uphillbothways , (edited ) in China denies reports it obstructed G20 climate discussions
@uphillbothways@kbin.social avatar

An earlier version of a Financial Times article (archived here: https://archive.is/wzgUP#selection-2349.168-2349.331) mentions how: "Beijing’s decision to dispatch Guo Xiaofeng to Chennai, a diplomat with a reputation for obstructionism, signalled China’s resistance to the G20 process this week."

Interestingly, the article has since been altered to remove any names of the Chinese team. (current version available here: https://www.ft.com/content/3c8bab17-5719-4174-9a96-3cf04ef0b968)

Trying to find current references to any members of the Chinese delegation has been extremely difficult, as if their names where purposely scrubbed from news sources to enable China to issue blanket denials of this nature. Not sure what kind of intimidation behind the scenes was required to make that happen. But, these web archives are very useful in this circumstance.

Poland should “posture” back by blowing them out of their sovereign air space.
