Higgins also pushed back on the notion that Democrats and the liberal left engage in their own echo chambers.

“Critics would say that the liberal echo chamber is CNN, MSNBC and mainstream media,” he said. "I would say in response to that, that quite frankly it’s b*******. “At the RNC all we had to do was repeat talking points and it would go on Fox News as is. Democrats don’t do that, the DNC [Democratic National Committee] doesn’t do it.”

He added: “Also, I think an important thing about what differentiates the left and right and the media—the left has no similar echo chamber as evidenced by the lack of a left-wing freedom caucus.”

Even the ex-Republican staffer doesn’t pull a “both sides” because he knows firsthand that it’s not true.

Let me ask you, is it your uterus? No? Then mind your own business and let women manage their own bodies as they see fit.

    zer0nix ,

Why does god? The vast preponderance of abortions happen in the same window as the vast preponderance of miscarriages, which can happen to 87 percent of fertilized embryos in the case of in vitro fertilization, and some other smaller but also shockingly high number for in vivo fertilization.

Also if you don’t want ‘innocent babies’ to be killed why have such a hard on against prophylactics and plan b, especially since it takes 24h for sperm and egg to actually merge DNA and form a new organism? Why have an issue with birth control or porn or premarital conjugation and why make it everyone else’s issue?

If women are getting abortions in the same period that God randomly gives miscarriages, I tend to think they are actually part of the same thing and that the feeling the prospective mother has about her future child being unwanted is just one final ‘God given’ protection against creating something broken.

    Abolish the police

    LanternEverywhere , (edited )

That's silly, i don't want to live in a modern society without police. I don't want to abolish the police, i want BETTER police than the ones we have now.

    QHC ,

Do you believe the current version of policing in America can be successfully reformed? Can the current officers be sufficiently re-trained? Who is going to patrol the streets until that happens?

When people say abolish the police, they are saying that the current system has to be entirely dismantled and replaced. You actually appear to agree with the end objective.

    LanternEverywhere ,

If that's what they mean then they're terribly miscommunicating, because they're literally saying something completely different.

    QHC ,

Not really. “Abolish the police [as they currently exist]” is just step 1.

    Burn_The_Right ,

It can. Every act of oppression, bigotry, racism, homophobia, xenophobia and misogyny comes from one particular profile of cop. Conservative. Remove conservatives from policing and those issues stop almost completely.

There are a few good cops and every single one of them is a progressive.

    ThrowawayPermanente ,

While we’re at it would you guys like to be in control of the military, schools, and the media too?

    Burn_The_Right ,

Only if there is a problem with oppression of vulnerable groups in those places.

Conservatives can’t resist oppressing vulnerable people. That’s just who they are at their core.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

No, I would like them to not be in control of the military, schools and the media. There’s a difference.

    LanternEverywhere ,

Yes, i know, that's why i said i want better police.

    smegger ,

Exactly. Employ educated police, gotta be less likely to do dodgy crap because they’ll have a proper understanding of the laws. Also, why is it an elected position? You’d think that’s gonna make it a prime motivation for corruption, just make it a position assigned based on experience and knowledge.

    JustZ ,
    @JustZ@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah we would still have that. They just wouldn’t be called police anymore. I used to think it was hyperbole to say that every police agency in the US traces it’s origins to slave patrols, and now I realize that it is true.

The entire notion of policing, armed people reacting to crimes, catching criminals like cat and mouse, is what is broken. It doesn’t reduce crime, it makes more. It breaks families and communities. And what do we get in return? At best, we get to make a criminal feel extra bad by putting them in jail for a long long time. That model must end.

There will still be a reactionary force to call when warranted. But the force that responds when shit hits the fan and the force you call when you’re in a fender bender don’t need to be the same thing. Virtually every police call can be better handled by health and welfare services. Building affordable housing reduces the crime rate. Teaching people skills reduces the crime rate. That’s what the police force should be aimed at. But no, we have cat and mouse.

chiliedogg , in Abortion rights have won in every election since Roe v. Wade was overturned

Abortion rights do great on ballot measures, but not as well in general elections.

Yeah, most people support abortion rights, but those who oppose them are the most powerful single-issue voting block in the country.

Pro-choice people rarely base 100% of their vote on abortion. A pro-choicer who holds conservative beliefs on other issues generally votes Republican, but will vote in favor of abortion rights on a ballot measure.

Pro-lifers are different. They sincerely believe that abortion is mass murder of children, and that all other political issues combined don’t matter in comparison. A pro-lifer who holds liberal views on every other issue generally votes Republican.

    zer0nix ,

And yet they are inconsistent on companies that pollute air food and water. Somehow when corporations do it knowingly for the profit motive it’s God’s will despite causing miscarriages and birth defects en masse.

    chiliedogg ,

It’s not that all of them support these companies. It’s that they literally believe children are being murdered and that until they can permanently put a stop to the legal murder of children, no other political issues matter AT ALL. They’re the single-issue voting group that is really, truly single-issue, and they’re massive.

If Biden were anti-abortion due to his Catholicism while Trump was pro-choice, how many pro-choice Democrats would have voted for Trump? Almost none.

Meanwhile, millions of pro-lifer Republicans would have voted for Biden.

HellAwaits , in Former Republican staffer admits GOP would intentionally spread lies

doomer , in Illinois Supreme Court finds assault weapons ban constitutional

I’m pretty sure all of the people you don’t want having assault weapons in states like Illinois already have them.

I’m not so sure the ones those people dream of targeting have yet acquired reciprocal defenses.

Happy to see less guns around, but I do worry about the pre-existing distribution of them.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That’s the big problem. There are a bunch of gun stores in East Chicago, because it’s in Indiana. People just cross over state lines, buy guns, and go back to Chicago proper.

    BootyCreekCheekFreak ,

Well if you’re a resident of Illinois you can’t go to another state and buy a gun from a licensed dealer. You’d have to have it shipped to an FFL in your state. Since this rule is in effect then the FFL in Illinois wouldn’t sell it to you.

The only way you can go to another state and get a gun is if it’s a private sale.

    RaoulDook ,

Not legally, and not through any licensed dealer. So if you know of anyone doing that, feel free to report their crimes to the police so you can do your part to reduce gun crimes.

Just the analogy that you can setup laws to change the user behavior.

    Cethin ,

First, you have to start somewhere. If one person legally purchased a nuclear bomb, I don’t think they shouldn’t pass a law preventing anyone else from purchasing a nuclear bomb.

Second, you’re not going to be carrying around any long gun. Those will be for home defence at most, likely just a range toy (and also to be shown during a protest to make sure other people know your people are armed). Maybe it’ll be useful if we end up in a civil war or something, idk. A handgun is nearly as good at killing people and can be carried around easily. If you want protection from these people then you want a handgun.

    doomer , (edited )

    deleted_by_author

  • Cethin ,

A rifle won’t protect those people either.

A handgun has almost as much killing power as a rifle. Most rifles people have are fire 5.56x45mm rounds. The penetrative power of those are reasonably low. Now, 7.62 will probably punch through any body armor they’re wearing, but that’s fairly uncommon I’m the US. With the NGSW we’ll see more larger rounds, but until then your handgun will kill about as well as their rifle, assuming your close enough which a self defence situation would imply.

A longer gun is better for longer ranges. If you’re at longer range, probably just get out of the way instead of thinking you’ll fight back. Most likely you’ll just make the situation more confusing and no one will be able to identify the “good guy with a gun” and you’ll get shot, by police or otherwise.

Man, the ACLU is gonna have a field day with this one. And Newell should be charged with making a fake police report:

The search warrant identifies two pages worth of items that law enforcement officers were allowed to seize, including computer software and hardware, digital communications, cellular networks, servers and hard drives, items with passwords, utility records, and all documents and records pertaining to Newell. The warrant specifically targeted ownership of computers capable of being used to “participate in the identity theft of Kari Newell.”

She's claiming that because Meyer did research on her, he's participating in identity theft. Great job at keeping this story out of the papers, Newell, now everyone knows you're a drunk-driving criminal with no respect to for the rule of law or freedom of the press. Welcome to the Streisand effect.

    roguetrick , (edited )

It wasn't just her. What happened was the paper said the police knew she didn't have a license and gave her a pass. The cops decided to punish the paper for calling out their corruption. Everything else just flows from incompetence, from the attorney general's office to the judge.

    Arotrios ,

I hear you there - there's plenty of dumbfuckery laced throughout this story. I just wanted to draw out that particular piece of stupid in my comment, because it's clear that this drunken trash heap of a human being is the root of the entire brouhaha.

    roguetrick ,

Check this out, the paper was also investigating the police chief for sexual misconduct allegations. I think drunk driving Karen was just a pretext here: https://thehandbasket.substack.com/p/a-conversation-with-the-newspaper

    ArtieShaw ,
    @ArtieShaw@kbin.social avatar

That's a good find. Unfortunately for that chief, he seems to have a talent for lighting his problems on fire instead of burying them. What could have been a quiet little small town scandal blew up to become national news. Good work, chief!

And the greatest irony to me is that the newspaper reported on NONE of this. OK, they did cover the story where Karin went off the rails and aired her own dirty laundry at the town council meeting, but it's not like that was any sort of secret.

    QHC ,

The coverup is always worse than the crime.
